Chester Draws, in a parallel universe

Somewhere this week on MN, I've seen someone write about 'the luck of the drawer' - which still makes sense, as if there's a huge chest of many, many drawers & you have to pick one to open, without knowing what's inside any of them.

Back to the op, in my work I used to see an awful lot of men with lying down problems, often cancer (ie prostrate, not prostate)

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 17/03/2023 11:03

Seen yesterday, 'this is the good standard' (I've previously also seen 'goal standard').

From a MN post about an Indian dinner:

'must have got something wrong. OH just cringed n explained his brother can be odd at times and offered me an onion bargee'

seen on here a million times
loose instead of lose
it's lose, lose not bloody loose i tell ya

I used to see ‘rest bite’ a lot on a forum for carers of people with dementia. There was some logic to it though - the poor things were desperate for a ‘bite’ of ‘rest’.

pointythings · 08/04/2023 08:55

@marmiteandminticecream well, if you're into field archery it can be both. You can loose the arrow, and if your aim is off, you can then lose it in the acres of forest you're walking through.

I encountered "ofay" on Facebook today. As in "I am not ofay with how these things work".

pointythings · 08/04/2023 10:05

@WelHong that's awful.

I think most of this is because people don't read any more.

whathaveidonetomydc · 08/04/2023 10:54

I saw a children's author write a blog post titled 'five thinks my parents said to me that I won't say to my children'. I'm hoping it's just a typo!

I need some help with the usage of practice/practise if anyone is inclined.

Practise is the verb and practice is the noun. Would it help to remember that practise/practice works on the same lines as advise/advice? So if you would use 'advise', that's when you'd use 'practise'!

I agree with you that it's largely to do with people not reading, @pointythings

whathaveidonetomydc · 08/04/2023 14:34

@WelHong I know the verb/noun thing in practise (?) but I still get confused about a few things. Eg, I do this as a practice or practise?
I practise ballet daily, but do I practise or practice medicine?

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 08/04/2023 19:14

I think a lot of it comes from teaching children to read and write using phonetics; they don’t know how to spell something so, rather than simply look it up (and, with the internet and spellcheck software, it’s not out of the realms to do) people spell things how they would say it in their head.

Well. Just try it with advise/advice. Is this a piece of advice, or a piece of advise?

The ballet/medicine one is good, actually - "to practise ballet" is the same as "to practise medicine". You would practise medicine in a medical practice!
