What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

Lol you all hang around my posts far too much. So interested in my views yet I don’t care for yours - truly.

Feel free to ignore and harass someone else I’m sure they’ll love your marvellous insights.

VenAqui · 13/03/2023 08:59

I’ve been here years and yeas, Marsha. I’ve never seen you so rattled.

perhaps some time out?

Maybe you could start the ball rolling?

VenAqui · 13/03/2023 09:01

Ever heard that saying…….?

“me thinks she doth protest too much”

Yah, true say to that, Chumly

im off to do something less boring instead. Or something like that.

toodles!

MarshaBradyo · 13/03/2023 09:04

I’m fine thanks

But I am really hoping they do ignore my posts from now on.

It’s annoying to keep saying I’m not interested. There’s loads of posters on here if they want to annoy someone else go for it.

As for protest too much hmm I’ve said this many times. They are a bit heard of hearing.

So I can only assume they do really care what I post. I welcome the ‘don’t bother’ phase they want to move to. Sounds way better:

borntobequiet · 13/03/2023 09:05

I rarely agree with Marsha but in this case she’s factually correct re the R4 interview, and any speculation on what’s going on behind the scenes is just that, speculation.
And yes, all media are biased, some more obviously than others.

Only Marsha is getting so angry and insulting over a nature program, you re not, neither is anyone else, so no need to start any ball rolling is there.

Who’s “they” Marsha?

MarshaBradyo · 13/03/2023 09:08

I’m fine.

Go. Be free from caring about what I post.

I have asked a few and they have actually moved on, it’s been great. Just you two left now

See if you can do it…

Which is all most posters have said, We don't know but hold a sceptical pov.

Don't see what is so controversial, would be great to know this was a decision taken purely on scheduling.

Yes, he had one for about 20 days as a student and the other for 2 months as a student.
They were well-vetted - so he doesn't want unknown people in his gated mansion.

I suppose that's better than Yvette Cooper who said she would take in a Syrian family in 2016, and hasn't done so to date.

Yvette Cooper has had a Ukrainian family living with her and her husband Ed Balls for nearly a year.

Sky news are reporting that Gary Lineker will be back on MOTD and the BBC are going to issue an apology to him. So that's what's going on at the BBC this morning according to Sky news.

A real apology ?

Or one of those where it's really your fault ?

This is the apology:

Everyone recognises this has been a difficult period for staff, contributors, presenters and, most importantly, our audiences. I apologise for this.

bellac11 · 13/03/2023 13:04

Not much of apology but then in private with him they may well have said something a bit more.

Hopefully it was his lawyer who achieved this and pointed out the hypocrisy of their comments about his twitter in 2018 and also comparable situations with Chris Packham and other presenters

Either way glad it'll be sorted, should never have happened.

If only all disagreements could so easily resolved.

Oblomov23 · 13/03/2023 16:16

I didn't hear the apology bit, only that he'd be back on MoTD. It says they'd review their online policy. Nothing about apology.

He's had refugees living in his house. He doesn't just talk the talk

Although to be fair, they only stayed for about a month each - one refugee was studying law - the other refugee went on to university with the aim of being a rocket scientist. I doubt all refugees are so well educated.

Well that's a month longer than most people would house a stranger, so he still gets my respect.

Although I suspect a lot of migrants are that well educated, and as a result we should be teaching them English and using their skills, rather than keeping them locked up in grotty hotels in grotty areas. Nothing to stop us giving them a short-term permit to work and still kicking them out if they don't qualify to stay/we fund something concerning about their past and don't want them here.

lieselotte · 13/03/2023 16:41

As for the Fiona Bruce saga, the way to get around that is to stop broadcasting it live and have a 5 minute delay so the lawyers can cut anything out that might be dodgy and can't be contextualised.

A bit off topic but it makes me laugh when people are so snide about how long someone might have hosted a refugee given that most people on this website wont even open their front door and hate their family staying overnight!!!!

(me included by the way)

This is a terrible own goal for the BBC and Tim Davie. Is Richard Sharp still there?

SinnerBoy · 13/03/2023 18:03

Sharp is under a lot of pressure to resign.

www.theguardian.com/media/2023/mar/13/bbc-chair-richard-sharp-under-growing-pressure-to-quit-over-gary-lineker-row

Keir Starmer called on the government to examine how it could protect a “truly independent and impartial” BBC.

He told ITV News: “I think Richard Sharp’s position is increasingly untenable. I think most people watching the complete mess of the last few days would say how on earth is he still in position and Gary Lineker has been taken off air? This is a mess of the BBC’s own making. They need to sort it out and sort it out fast.”
