What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

I remember Thatcher very well. I’d take her over this lot any day of the week. She must be spinning in her grave at this lot of corrupt, lying bastards. At least she didn’t kick everyone with a hint of integrity out of her cabinet.

Thatcher used to rebuke the BBC all the time and empowered the right wing press to become the monster it became, particularly with Murdoch, and it exchange got fawning coverage.

She was certainly better than the last 13 years of incompetence and corruption though. She was as very strong leader and genuinely strong leaders surround themselves with strong people. Compare that with jokes like Boris and Truss. Sunak is little better.

Exactly. It’s not quite as simple as a saying you don’t watch the beeb is it?

No it isn’t. I’ve had TV inspectors looking through my window and working out if there was a tv in the corner of the room. Also I once bought a freeview box for my brother when they were first out and the shop informed tv licensing that I’d bought tv receiving equipment and they wrote saying we needed to buy a license. I think if you’ve got a tele and receiving equipment you’re going to have a much harder time convincing them you are not watching live tv. I expect they have the power to check your devices and one little slip up and you’re screwed.

VenAqui · 12/03/2023 18:55

Yep, hard to sign opting out of all telly.

Signalbox · 12/03/2023 19:00

Also if you’ve got kids you’ve got to trust they they don’t inadvertently watch anything live or bbc iplayer. Even on their mobile phones. It’s a bit of a minefield.

I think this thread shows people watching Al Jazeera without a license is completely illegal.

@dimorphism Gary Lineker has helped refugees by taking two into his home and supporting them still today.

Yes, he had one for about 20 days as a student and the other for 2 months as a student.
They were well-vetted - so he doesn't want unknown people in his gated mansion.

I suppose that's better than Yvette Cooper who said she would take in a Syrian family in 2016, and hasn't done so to date.

At least he did.
I’d love to know how many Sunak took into his many properties, or Johnson.

Ah yes, none.

I believe Rishi Sunak is having the electricity upgraded to one of his properties to accommodate some refugees.

Refugees? Ha ha! It’s because of his swimming pool, the electricity wasn’t strong enough to heat it so it has had to be upgraded. Nice try though.

Are you joking right?

LadyWithLapdog · 12/03/2023 22:14

While 350 public swimming pools have closed or cut their hours due to energy costs, Sunak has to have the National fucking Grid upgraded to support his new swimming pool at his weekend home. I doubt it’s about refugees.

Seventytwosunsetstrip · 13/03/2023 00:30

VenAqui · 10/03/2023 19:15

Why did the bbc allow him his time to speak out then? That’s not impartial either.

What do you want the BBC to do? Confiscate his phone ?!

He's paying for the work I can't see a problem.

The National Grid use contractors to do the work and they have to pay them. So Sunak is paying in to the economy.

We bought a house years ago with no gas. We paid to have it put in.

It's non-issue.

If Councils choose to cut the hours of public services that's their choice.

I hardly think he get free electricity !

Oh I do lots of things thanks, I'm a hive of experience and skills. <No need to lower yourself to insulting language just because you cannot defend this highly privileged apparently not very bright man posting goady tweets though>

If he wants to do that I'm sure he could get a job as sports commentator on a private channel. I don't see why we should pay his ridiculous wages.

"not very bright man"

How many different languages do you speak?

Seventytwosunsetstrip · 13/03/2023 01:17

It seems Lineker's problems won't end even if he does get reinstated;

And what’s that got to do with freedom of speech and the BBC’s obvious right wing bias?

I thought all you Lefties wanted the rich to pay more tax?

This is not the first time that Lineker has been involved in a tax dispute with HMRC. In 2012, he was forced to pay £4.9 million in back taxes after being found to have used a tax avoidance scheme. Lineker has stated that he regrets using the scheme and has since taken steps to ensure that he pays his fair share of tax.

BBC bias depends on where you are politically

You still haven’t explained what it’s got to do with freedom of speech and the BBC’s obvious right wing bias.

The point you’re so carefully avoiding is it’s not for refugees.

and yes, it’s tone deaf. He’s the PM ffs.

LadyWithLapdog · 13/03/2023 06:58

Councils, 350 of them, chose to close swimming pools or cut down the hours. What a choice. Let’s blame the councils that they weren’t given the money to keep them going. It’s only plebs children who are affected. I don’t want to derail the thread but, yeah, tone deaf.

Well, actually there is an issue.

Sunak is paying exactly the same per unit of electricity as someone on min wage, despite have a family fortune of £740m.

Of course its not just Sunak, its millions of families across the UK getting vast amounts of tax payers money to get subsidised electricity, when they don't need it, meanwhile 4 families are in debt to energy companies and cannot afford to heat their home.

2.5m millionaires live in the UK.

Whilst universal support may have been needed earlier because of the urgency of the situation, Hunt has had plenty of time to introduce a tiered system but has chosen not too.
Very few countries have universal support now.

Your “answer” might fit a different question. A further diatribe about “lefties” and Lineker’s tax affairs doesn’t come close to answering my question.
