What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

R4 - confirming BBC commissioned five, offered to show sixth on iPlayer

Strange though that the one controversial one is stuck out on its own.

I assume the BBC could have chosen any of the 6 not to be shown on mainstream BBC TV?

Of course now what will happen is everyone & their dog will tune into iPlayer lol!

Aside, why is it that 'papers that don't support a posters pov are called "rags" but ones that do are great sources of unbiased information and news coverage?

imho they are ALL biased, so by definition are rags!

In the 80s the BBC commissioned Boys From the Blackstuff. You just wouldn't get that now because they're too scared of upsetting the government or the Daily Mail.

Well that's a month longer than most people would house a stranger, so he still gets my respect.

Although I suspect a lot of migrants are that well educated, and as a result we should be teaching them English and using their skills, rather than keeping them locked up in grotty hotels in grotty areas. Nothing to stop us giving them a short-term permit to work and still kicking them out if they don't qualify to stay/we fund something concerning about their past and don't want them here.

Germany looks at the skills of the economic refugee and if they have the skills needed, they are given a work visa.

Would be rather strange if we deported to Rwanda, say a Syrian Dentist etc.

Skilled people are a pain in the arse. They have weird tendencies to not trust just anyone (like the arseholes in power). They can deconstruct bullshit. They know their own worth. They are much harder to bully.

Why in the name of all that is sacred would you want people like that in the population ? Unless you can kick them out at a moments notice.

All of a sudden the policies of the past 13 years make a lot of sense, don't they ?

Thats nonsense.

They just don't think it's cost-effective to sort through all the dross to find these "engineers".

Where is your evidence that they are "dross" ? funny how those on the right seek to dehumanise refugees with name calling.

We have shortages across the board, agri, health, food processing (currently a case going through the courts of exploiting workers from Nepal) bought here on the "Skilled workers scheme"

If Germany can find skilled refugee's why can't we?

Or is your solution that we spend millions per day putting them in hotels?

SerendipityJane · 14/03/2023 12:52

If Germany can find skilled refugee's why can't we?

Because we don't want to.

If we put politicians on mute, and simply look at the outcomes of their actions, we can see pretty much what was intended.

I am seriously wondering whether it was different in "olden days", when the public were much less exposed to the bullshit, and generally only saw the outcomes ?

OutOfChocolate · 14/03/2023 12:57

I know skilled refugees who were in Britain who have left the country.
If politicians and some of the public continually shout an anti refugee spiel, then those with skills will go where they are more welcome. It is not rocket science.

Obviously it’s far more cost effective not to process any applications and refuse to allow any refugees to work and make them live in substandard conditions for months on end at the taxpayers’ expense. 🙄

You can't surely believe that all those fit young men who arrive in boats are all refugee doctors, engineers and brain surgeons?

The minute they land they scarper because they are economic migrants.

If they wanted to integrate they wouldn't run away to a rendezvous with their traffickers.

Contrary to what you claim Germany has a big problem recruiting skilled workers despite Merkel's, "come one come all" policy in 2015.

People need to bear in mind that politicians don't give two shits about taxpayers money. Firstly it's not theirs. And secondly no-onw can really be sure where it goes anyway. Finally, as long as as it has ideological value, the tiny fraction of the public that care will be happy anyway.

Hence the fact that the bedroom tax hasn't saved a penny. In fact it has cost money overall to implement. However it has taught poor people the valuable less that they don't matter and should stop being poor so it's alright.

Much the same way the switch from DLA to PIP was only ever meant to save money. Something which slipped out accidentally a while back when a minister mentioned it to the PAC.

If you are surprised to learn the government hate the poor, you have no idea the contempt they have for the disabled. Egged on by a society that also doesn't give a shit, it has to be said.

No-one is "spouting anti-refugee spiel".

The concerns are about those chancers who are 'gaming the system' by claiming to be refugees when they are not, to claim to be children when they are not, to claim to be 'trafficked' when they are not. etc

UK has always supported genuine refugees.

OutOfChocolate · 14/03/2023 13:37

There has been massive anti refugee discourse from the government and some of the public for some time.
You can try to defend it all you want. But it makes zero difference. Refugees have eyes and ears and those who are skilled have lots of choices about where they live. So many have chosen not to be in the UK.

You seem able to draw conclusions that simply were not said or implied, remarkable.

Developing countries can and do have people who are hard working/skilled and could do jobs here in the UK, some will be chancers, looking to game the system, some could be given a 3 year work visa and fill jobs that need doing here in the UK instead of trying to take workers from countries that need them for themselves.

You do realise what Braverman wants to do? deport all and every refugee regardless of their claim, only some children will be allowed to stay but then deported once they are 18, so a child could do all their schooling here in the UK, inc A levels and then be deported.

I have no idea what you mean.

About time we got tough to break up the smugglers business model. Anyone who disagree with this is complicit with the people traffickers.

We can't even deport criminals because of all the 'pinkos' in the judiciary.

A Somalian double rapist was allowed to stay in the UK on human rights grounds after a judge said he would face ‘degrading’ treatment in his home country due to his mental health. The 49-year-old arrived in Britain in 2004 and claimed asylum, but he amassed eight convictions in the space of six years. Robbery, trying to pervert the course of justice. Raping two different women were among his offences.
He used a knife during one of these crimes and was jailed for more than seven years. Now he has been allowed to stay here. But what about the safety of the public?

^ ^How many more of these cases do we need? (Incidentally I can quote 12 more.)

Here's another ,
How about the Liverpool bomber Emad Jamil Al-Swealmeen, 32, who is believed to have had two separate asylum claims rejected in 2015 and 2017, who lied to the authorities and who was convicted of a crime involving a knife, but who was able to remain in the UK for years and allowed to carry out what could have been a devastating attack on Remembrance Sunday in November 2021.
