Anyone else got this bastard coughing bug?

DS and all his classmates had this coughing bug and now it's sweeping the parents too. Been coughing solidly for two weeks. At times coughing so hard I've been been sick and struggled to catch my breath. My pelvic floor is pleading for mercy.

Doctor has listened to my chest and there's no infections. I've tested for Covid daily and everything is coming back negative.

Still I can't stop fucking coughing.

Anyone else? How long before it passes....

I've just taken the dogs round the block, first time I have done much today and felt wheezy and struggled to catch my breath. feel completely wiped out also after a very short ten minute walk. I can normally walk for an hour or more with no problem. My chest just feels tight and wheezy.

A good friend of mine had it for seven weeks. She's been left with a vaginal prolapse because of all the coughing.

I had it over the Christmas hols and was sick every day from coughing. Took 3 weeks to get over it, unbelievable.

SuziLikeSuziQ · 11/02/2023 23:42

I have it. DS had it first for about 4 weeks, with the worst coughing over Christmas. He seems to be over it now, but I've had it for probably about 3 weeks now. I've been awake in the night due to coughing, coughing so much I was sick and having to constantly wear a sanitary towel because it turns out my pelvic floor isn't so good when faced with prolonged bouts of extreme coughing.

Then it moved to my head (while continuing with a cough) so I was blowing my nose every 2 minutes. I now have an ear infection, as well as a lingering cough, which has been delightful with agonising earache and pus/discharge.

I am still coughing, too. And now DH has started coughing. It's the illness that keeps on giving.

@BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood i have two teaspoons before bed and just took it as the potion as I like to call it. Thought it would be easier to knock it back quick as I thought it was bloody horrible tasting

Embelline · 12/02/2023 00:25

That’s a useful link @BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood as I say I made up the mixture and just had it like that as water was added to the concoction and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to stomach it otherwise but it sounds like it would work either way?
I think it’s supposed to cut through/dry up mucus so it doesn’t cure the cough exactly but kills the mucus which can irritate and cause the cough or make it worse. I could have that completely wrong though as I was pretty much delirious with tiredness when I was looking all this up before Christmas!

ProtectorExtraordinaryOfTheCantonsOfNim · 12/02/2023 00:30

My cough lasted about six weeks. In fact it was only when I attempted to inhale a bit of sandwich instead of swallowing it earlier today and set off a crumb-related coughing fit that I realised that the cough's been gone for several days.

cravingtoblerone · 12/02/2023 08:43

My head is banging this morning. Unsure if it's the coughing that's hurting my head or the messed up sleep pattern. Ibruprofen not touching it.

Am going to buy some apple cider apple vinegar, ginger and honey today. (Need to go to Tesco to pick up more Tena Lady anyway - my poor pelvic floor is dying....)

You need to make sure the cider vinegar is really good quality. Braggs or Mother cider vinegar. You can get Braggs from Amazon.

BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood · 12/02/2023 09:56

Holland and Barrett have it too.

You shouldn’t have it neat as it is bad for tooth enamel.
I have a bottle in my cupboard as I was drinking it every morning diluted some time ago, then just forgot about it.

BrummiMummi · 12/02/2023 10:37

Sudafed sinus nose spray saved me .. 2 weeks in now and it finally feels like it’s breaking 😮‍💨

Embelline · 12/02/2023 11:00

@BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood it isn’t neat in that cough “medicine” if you follow the link I posted it’s mixed with honey, ginger and water and you only have a spoonful

BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood · 12/02/2023 11:09

Yes I know. I was replying to someone who said they had a couple of spoonfuls and it tasted awful. Sorry for the confusion.

Fellsbluemist · 12/02/2023 11:11

I feel your pain. For me it took -
2 separate rounds of steroids
A 10 day antibiotic course
A chest xray (clear)
A blue inhaler
Coughing myself sick most mornings
And finally - after 10 weeks of feeling dire- I am no longer coughing.
I've never felt so broken with something - I thought I was going to be coughing for ever.

Firebird83 · 12/02/2023 11:57

I think I might have something else at the same time as I had a persistent cough that seemed to be getting better and now started with shivering and achey muscles, feeling really weak and fatigued etc. Now the cough is even worse!

Thanks at least that gives me a bit of hope. Ive had 2 lots of steroids, 2 lots of antibiotics, blue inhaler, chest clear on stethoscope, chest xray clear. Im on week 8, still coughing, no energy, feel like crap. Hopefully near the end but as you say never felt so defeated by anything so relentless as this 24/7 cough week after week after week

Alwayswonderedwhy · 12/02/2023 12:17

Yes! It's extremely annoying and like you say, no good if you have pelvic floor issues.

I tested negative for covid but several work colleagues I work closely with tested positive so I'm wondering if it was that and it's dragging on.

Fellsbluemist · 12/02/2023 12:23

I started walking for half an hour each day about 8 weeks in. I coughed pretty solid to start with but I think it really helped getting better as I coughed up a ton of crap out my lungs on each walk! Even though it was exhausting I think it helped in the long run.

Exactly what I feel like. I never get colds and haven’t had flu for 25 years. This is much worse than Covid.

NoEffingWay · 12/02/2023 21:16

I had covid before Christmas and finally felt better, then 2 weeks ago woke up feeling awful and had all of the symptoms. My GP refused to give me rescue steroids for my asthma and it has prolonged the agony, my asthma has been barely managed at times.

I have finally stopped coughing all the time, kept wetting myself and vomiting which was delightful,

Motherofalittledragon · 12/02/2023 21:31

Yep me and the DC have had it since Christmas, just can't shift the damn thing.

BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood · 13/02/2023 01:40

I’ve had the cider vinegar two days running. I’m awake with the throat back to stratospheric levels of soreness and an uncontrollable cough. This is a really horrible virus.

fivetriangulartrees · 13/02/2023 01:55

I've been coughing for 9 weeks, sleeping badly and wishing I'd done more pelvic floor exercises in my last pregnancy.

It was covid - although I didn't test positive until 2 weeks in (merry Christmas!), so wouldn't be surprised if some of you who tested negative have it.

Horrified by PP's comment about vaginal prolapse!
