I'm shocked but not surprised. This world is depressing and scary for women.

Seriously?

Interview being given by a colleague just now who brings it home by saying 'you are only as safe as your make partner allows you to be'.
100% accurate and truly terrifying for women.

Yes. I felt like I saw her surpressed rage as she spoke. Her neck flushed red.

It's not * a good time to be a woman.*

It never has been.

Twattergy · 07/02/2023 18:25

Male domestic violence upon women and children is a global disaster. Every further death is awful and I wish I could do something to stop it. I hate the bloody patriarchy.

I know but it is definitely getting worse.

silvermantella · 07/02/2023 18:17

how on earth can you say what all your friends think?
I've got lots of friends, I wouldn't come out with my feelings on feminism, the state of the world, inherent unfairness to all of them, and then update them each time if those feelings have changed after any pertinent news items!

I know that was such a weird thing to say, I wonder how long it took that poster to contact every woman they know for their inner thoughts.

It is just the fact men feel they have the right and power to do this, it is all about them. Nobody else matters, no one has the right to move on if they have messed up. It is just what they feel and what they want. It is insidious and everywhere.

You should see the Fathers4Justice page on Facebook.

The misogyny is absolutely horrific. I'm certain there are future killers on there.

Januaryisshit · 07/02/2023 18:29

I am absolutely so fucked off, disgusted and shit scared for my daughter's future.
Every week surprise surprise another fucking man conducts a disgusting act against a woman.

ShellsOnTheBeach · 07/02/2023 18:31

In many ways, now is the best time to be a woman. We have so many rights and opportunities that previous generations could only dream about.

And yet, the WWN and the news we watch has highlighted how disadvantaged and threatened women still are. Even if we are not victims of violence ourselves, we are aware of the threat, and we restrict our activities to protect ourselves.

This affects all of us. And then we read about something truly horrific and, amongst all the horrible emotions, we reassure ourselves that this could never happen to us.

I'm sure Emma never thought her husband, however awful he was, would be capable of murdering her and their child. And yet he did. So much male entitlement, anger, misogyny just below the surface.

I don't know what the solution is.

asblindasabat · 07/02/2023 18:31

I’m sorry but I am honestly baffled at how you can get a gun licence? This shouldn’t be allowed. Why would somebody need a gun?

An absolutely disgusting case. RIP to Emma and Lettie. 💐🕯️

Mylobsterteapot · 07/02/2023 18:31

What the GDST lady said on the BBC “no matter no successful you are as a woman, you are only as safe as your male partner let’s you be”.

I have no words.

Hawkins002 · 07/02/2023 18:08

True but then you get eg five threads all advocating different angles and perspective

Which would be fine.

stripedsox · 07/02/2023 18:33

It's now been announced the husband did, what goes through their heads to do this?
Such a waste of the life of a mother and her little girl.
R.I.P 💐

It’s a terrible thing to happen to that family but I disagree that the world is depressing and scary for women.

i certainly don’t feel that way and neither does any female in my family or friends.

I have to agree with you. There is a lot of hyperbole on MN - and neither I nor any of my female friends feel that way either.

It's a shocking thing to have happened, but doesn't mean all men are going to behave like that - and before anyone starts, where I live (not UK) it's not so long ago that a man came home from work to find his three little daughters dead, killed by their mother.

What a pathetic response. Hate leads to violence. Stop twisting this tragic event for your own political purposes.

@Lentilweaver's response wasn't pathetic all, simply truthful.

Oh jog on..Political my arse. Hate leads to violence? What a trite, facile, Hallmark card way to dismiss the fact that 2 women are killed every week by men they know.

It's not shocking 2-3 women are murdered by men in the UK per WEEK.

2 women a week in the UK are killed by men they know. In fact I think it’s closer to 3 now.

If you don’t find that depressing and scary then I don’t know what to tell you.

The statistics the other way round aren’t anywhere near that.

You can’t possibly know what all of your friends think/ feel nor what all of their relationships are/ were like from the inside. Nor how they feel when they read news stories like this.

bookworm14 · 07/02/2023 11:30

Of course it fucking was. We all knew it would be. Why can’t these pathetic, inadequate little men just kill themselves and leave their wives and kids alone? The answer is of course because they see them as possessions rather than as human beings with agency.

I have a seven-year-old daughter and am incandescent with rage at the fear that little girl must have felt. I suppose we have to hope she was asleep when he did it.

Every word of this.

Always fucking men. Commentary all over the media about the poor, sweet, innocent child's life, and understandably so.

Less sympathy for the also-innocent wife who has also lost her life to this monster. It's as though women are invisible, as though their lives don't matter in the least.

Makes your heart weep.

I have not read the whole thread, so maybe someone has already mentioned this, but it’s very interesting that he reported her to the police in 2016. I can’t help but think they had a blazing row then and he reported her to “teach her a lesson”. He liked “fast cars” and had a gun. It’s painting a picture of the man.

Daleksatemyshed · 07/02/2023 18:46

How sad and predictable this thread is, man kills his wife and child, lots of people are sad and angry about it and in no time we have the usual 1) women kill their children too 2) his MH must have been bad 3) all the men in my life are lovely, you shouldn't hate them.
My DP is lovely, we have a very equal relationship, but that doesn't mean I'm not truly, truly angry for all the women who are abused and murdered by inadeguate men. Time and again I see reports of women who are stalked, abused, murdered by men who can't stand a women to say no to them, whose ego is so fragile that exposure of their frailities is worse then death.
I don't know the solution, I wish I did, but I know it's not women's fault. Tragic one off tragedy my arse
