Weird things that make you feel comforted...

Not the usual things like kittens and hot chocolate. Just random things.

Has anyone got Netflix? You know Derek? Well the show in general makes me feel warm and cozy, because it's filled with care and loving characters.

But at the end of every episode... the channel 4 logo appears and that little chime plays (I can't remember the name for that!) but for some reason it makes me feel calm. Like it's nighttime and everyone is peacefully at home with a little lamp on under a quilt.

The crack of dawn imagining you're near the sea and can hear the sound of ship horns whilst still under your blanket waking up.

Driving past parked lorries in the dark imagining how nice it would be to be tucked up in one of those cabbies with a blanket and surrounded by the lights they decorate them with.

80s films, like ET, Stand By Me and The Goonies where again it's nighttime and the kids are all gathered around eating pizza or telling ghost stories with nothing to worry about because they're kids. Simpler times.

Being on a canal boat with the log burner in full works, or sat on the pontoon with a fold out chair and a bottle of wine in the evening.

Can you tell? I like nighttime and water 😃

Sitting in the car when it is raining really hard.
The smell of ironing.
Gardener’s Question Time.

Seeing buses in the evening with the lights on inside illuminating the passengers

If you buy something in a smart shop and the sales person wraps it really carefully for you (rare)
Hearing my cockerel crow early in the morning when I half wake but know I can doze for another hour.
My children discussing a game together when they don't realise I'm listening
Hearing the owls outside in the evening after I've tucked the kids up and all is quiet

The Boring Talks on radio 4. The presenter has the most calming way of talking ever and the topics are always just someone talking about their interest which makes the world feel really safe that someone is taking an interest in this thing that is not earth shattering, but is actually quite interesting when viewed through their eyes really.
I feel like all is well with the world.

Karvol on a cotton handkerchief. Even more so if it's had time to mellow.

BlastedPimples · 03/02/2023 22:46

Shipping forecast. But it must be read by a man.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 03/02/2023 22:46

@EadnothTheStaller Yes! The food bit in A Little Princess was one of my absolute favourite passages in any book when I was a child. I really wanted a lascar to sneak into my bedroom and lay out a feast while I slept.

PhoebePhalange · 03/02/2023 22:47

loved it since I first watched it aged 5 and cried when the shark died. think it was rated pg lol

Plump82 · 03/02/2023 22:48

When I'm in bed I like to put the Achilles heel part of one foot in-between my big toe and the toe next to it on the other foot.

I also love it when in a city in the summer abroad and you have the window open and can hear people starting their day, morning produce being delivered, shop windows being cleaned, bins being emptied etc

Sparkleshine21 · 03/02/2023 22:49

@ThisIsTrifficult yes!!! This!!

Lovely thread! Loads of things already mentioned on this but maybe a strange one..The smell of Vicks vaporub,it reminds me of being poorly as a child. I keep a tub next to my bed at all times,I sniff it every night and it calms me.

I sometimes put Vicks on my chest if I'm a bit down. It's comforting and warming.

This thread is such a lovely read.

More information needed please Helen - where can I find this?!

Thank you also to @SomethingNastyInTheBallPool for sharing that YouTube video.

As well as the shipping forecast, lying in bed hearing trains, motorway traffic and planes - why yes I did grown up not far from the M25 Grin

Standing outside but sheltered when there's a storm and it's absolutely tipping down.

Boiled eggs and toast soldiers.

Having my hair brushed or braided.

On a warm Spring or Summer night - having a shower before bed and then getting into fresh sheets, with the bedroom window open and a warm breeze coming in <happy sigh>

It’s in the calm app

I'm addicted to podcasts of a Radio 4 programme called Saturday Review in which four people — host Tom Sutcliffe and guests — have four cultural experiences in the week and then talk about it in a usually fairly intelligent and often quite funny and informed way. It covered a lot of good theatre, art, books, films, music etc. I used to live in London and pack in a lot of culture, then moved away. The programme enabled me to feel in touch with cultural things. It stopped in early 2020: no theatre or art galleries to visit. The BBC didn't revive it when things opened up, and I miss hearing what Tom and pals have made of current artistic events.

There are 500+ back episodes and I listened to them through lockdown as a reminder that when we came out of it there would be culture again. Now I just find it very relaxing and reassuring.

Habreathmint · 03/02/2023 23:03

I LOVE all of these! If you could sum up the feelings in a picture they would be by Edward Hopper. I call the feeling 'cosy contented lonliness'. I love getting into bed, warming my feet on the hot water bottle and putting cashmere socks on. And in summer,I love waking up to the sound of church bells and the scent of hyacinth, or whatever spring flowers I have beside my bed, floating on the gentle breeze. I'm a terrible daydreamer at the best of times but I love drifting off to sleep and imagining robbing a bank or being able to pause the world whenever I want!

thefinaltwist · 03/02/2023 23:04

The smell of onion and garlic cooking
The sound of heavy rain on the caravan roof
Watching the large variety of garden birds using the feeders/eating the homemade fat cakes I've made. Especially the robin I've name Robert

Friarclose · 03/02/2023 23:05

Cuddling up with my heated throw
My dog lying on my chest doing her little snores and little barks in her sleep
The sight of my sleeping 12 year olds face
The smell of fresh laundry, dryer sheets, launderettes, anything like that.
Family Guy, long been my show of choice if I need comforting or cheering up.
Watching something on TV with DH in lamplight when we don't have work the next day.
The sound of rain
Immersing my entire head in the bath, total silence and warmth.. until I have to breathe again! 😆
Bubbles in my bath

Karvol on a cotton handkerchief. Even more so if it's had time to mellow.

I too love the smell of Karvol but I don't think you can get it anymore?

caringcarer · 03/02/2023 23:08

Tea in bed in morning.
Tea made in bone china teapot with bone china matching cup and saucer all on a little tray. I snuggle up on sofa with weighted blanket and I am at peace with world.

ThisIsMyHappyFacee · 03/02/2023 23:09

I think this could possibly be the best thread I've seen on Mumsnet. I feel normal now and extremely content, thank you!

ohlalalalalalalalala · 03/02/2023 23:10
