Thread 4 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 13/01/2023 17:17

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 & 2 & 3.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

I haven't had a washing machine for over 20 years. All depends how many in the household. I'll never buy one now.

Gonners · 17/01/2023 14:03

@BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn
It didn't ask the security question; it just asked me to answer it.
'Please answer your security question: _'
What the fuck is the question?

MrG had that the other day - except there were two unspecified questions to answer! It took three different people on the helpline to sort it out, the last of whom was the security person who (for reasons of "security") wasn't allowed to know who he was talking to. So he talked to me, assuming I was the account-holder. We set up three new questions: the choices were very limited and the answers to all three happen to be identical - really, they genuinely are. I asked if that was a problem. Nope! Bonkers.

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/01/2023 14:27

@duc748 but how do you wash your clothes and more importantly your sheets and towels?

duc748 · 17/01/2023 14:46

I don't. I take them to the laundry. About once a fortnight. And everything is folded ready to put away, socks have been paired, etc.

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/01/2023 14:51

ahh - we produce far too much washing for that to make sense. i also hate laundrettes.

My neighbour uses a services where they collect your dirty washing from your house and return it laundered and dried the next day.

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/01/2023 14:55

But it is a bit pricey - www.laundryheap.co.uk/pricing

£16.95 per 6kg for towels and sheets, £2 per items for clothing. We do at least 2 loads of bed and bath linen a week plus another 1 - 2 loads of clothes.

I suspect we would end up spending about £50 a week on laundry. Which would be enough over the year to buy and run several washing machines!

duc748 · 17/01/2023 14:56

Well my laundrette is, er, beautiful. They do a great job. And no damp clothes hanging around the house!

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/01/2023 14:57

It is an attractive possibility!

duc748 · 17/01/2023 14:59

There's only one of me, and even at todays inflated prices, I'm paying about 16 quid a fortnight. Thats about two pints a week. Of course you live in exorbitant That London, GM!

Britinme · 17/01/2023 14:59

Maybe we are just slutty, but I don't do more than three loads in a week (or longer, depending) - one dark, one white and one light colours. I'm doing laundry today and the light coloured load is still small so it can wait another day or two. Mind you, my American front-loading washing machine has a larger capacity than the one I had in England so that probably makes a difference.

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/01/2023 15:04

Our washing machine is 8kg and we change towels and bedding weekly. Plus normal underwear, soaks and clothes plus sports stuff (Mr Monkey runs daily). We also use reusable cleaning cloths.

It all adds up.

But we are not at Mumsnet levels of laundry!

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/01/2023 15:05

@duc748 I am sure a local launderette would be cheaper but the ones round here are old school - you'd have to take the stuff there and collect it or stay and wash the stuff yourself. I don't have the time for that sort of nonsense.

duc748 · 17/01/2023 15:14

Well as I say, it works very well for me. The game - changer was socks, when I realised they were the limiting factor, just bought loads of them. Changed weekly into fortnightly. And I haven't actually used the machines in a laundrette in donkey's years. Service wash all the way.!

Kucinghitam · 17/01/2023 15:16

Update! I finally remembered the damned password. I basically did it by walking around the place I was when I set the thing up, until my stupid brain made the connection. Now I'm boggling that all this morning's desperate thinking about the password and trying to connect the hint just went completely up the wrong path. The hint was bloody obvious once I remembered the password. Maybe I needed to make it even more obvious e.g. "The password is THIS, you absolutely numpty."

Good stuff!

SinnerBoy · 17/01/2023 15:52

Good for you, Kucinghitam!

I've done the roses and the fuchsias, couldn't be arse with the hydrangea and favour poisoning it...

Tricyrtis2022 · 17/01/2023 16:02

I'm not a fan of hydrangea but look after several for other people. If you don't like it, Sinner, have it out and put in something you do like.

SqueakyDinosaur · 17/01/2023 19:53

I noticed on the old place that a comment with a link about the WiSpa case (as the perp has just been arrested, after a year on the lam) got deleted and the poster accused of being a troll. On the feminism thread. Good thing I didn't post the link to the utterly jaw-dropping interview with him here www.lamag.com/citythinkblog/exclusive-transgender-fugitive-who-spurred-wi-spa-riots-bares-all/

(I've already posted it somewhere on MN but I can't remember where)

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 17/01/2023 20:03

Thanks Squeaks, I saw something had been deleted and condemned but didn't know what. Elsewhere there the compulsory silence is beginning to chafe a little I think.

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/01/2023 20:21

The Scottish Independence thread was unteresting. I know this is an issue that many posters in the Other Place have an interest in and string views in and often relish a good debate.

On the GRA S35 deebacle today there were a few posts and it then petered out as everyone agreed they did not want to talk about the big grey thing in the room.

It is most odd.

Kucinghitam · 17/01/2023 20:30

It’s what they said they wanted. I’m certain they are all completely delighted with the quality of their utopian discussions.

The Scottish Independence thread was unteresting.

Great portmanteau words of our time, Gin!

bignosebignose · 17/01/2023 20:36

The deleted post was this Mail link, which I then posted on a WiSpa thread here having seen it over there. It’s an absolute dogs dinner of mixed up pronouns. But yes, linking to it is trolling because we mustn’t undermine the original story as reported by the Graun, etc.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 17/01/2023 21:27

I am not sure if it was you posting it, referring to the perp as 'he', or me admonishing you: "she, you bigot".

Childish I know. I haven't been to That Place for ages, but popped in and couldn't resist. I know your post got cancelled but I suspect it was my drawing attention to it that did for it.

When the f**k will those 'feminists' wake up?

bignosebignose · 17/01/2023 22:35

Oh sorry, I described that poorly - I meant that I nicked the Mail link from that deleted post before it was deleted and then stuck it on a thread over here, I can’t claim credit for the deleted post itself. Just happened to look over there and see the story and thought it deserved to be shared. The person who posted it is a GBOL but I’m not sure that they have, er, transitioned to mumsnet so I won’t name any names.
