Thread 4 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 13/01/2023 17:17

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 & 2 & 3.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Heh. It is unusual, but we've been unwell since Christmas and our appetites aren't great. Anyway, all the chips are gone now and hopefully the corvids enjoyed them.

MmePoppySeedDafage · 22/01/2023 15:07

Happy New Year Kuc! I remember reading somewhere that it's hard to tell if it's a cat or a rabbit when the creature skinned and prepared for cooking, but I find it hard to believe.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 22/01/2023 15:08

Now with correct spelling of my surname- tsk.

MadameDefargeinme · 22/01/2023 15:15

I was (I think) born in the year of the Iron Tiger - but it was the end of February 1950 (hell's teeth I'm nearly 73! How did that happen?) and I'm not sure how that ties in with the Chinese new year. I read some prediction or other tying it to the invasion of Tibet.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 22/01/2023 15:46

I don't think you can take full responsibility for that.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 22/01/2023 15:48

I have been told that as a Wood Tiger I should avoid working for the fire brigade. Slightly less dramatic than invasions, but I have heeded the advice.

MadameTricyrtisDefarge · 22/01/2023 16:12

I'm a metal ox and Mr T is a metal rat. No idea what those mean, though.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 22/01/2023 16:30

Don't work with magnets?

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 22/01/2023 16:30

muddy pup here. seems about right.

I don't think you can take full responsibility for that.

That's a relief.

Kucinghitam · 22/01/2023 16:32

Looks like @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn and I are of an age!

@MadameTricyrtisDefarge There are 5 elements (wood, air, fire, water, metal/iron) in the Chinese zodiac on some kind of cycle, which I don't understand.

@MmePoppySeedDafage On holiday in Spain, my uncle once accidentally ordered grilled rabbit instead of grilled lamb. The resulting offering, with its distinctive buck-toothed grimace, was very definitely a rabbit! (Uncle couldn't bring himself to eat it, so I swapped meals with him - ISTR it was perfectly delicious).

As it happens, we don't. Phew!

We do have a magnet, mind you. Mr T found it on the floor in Sainsbury and it's one of those really strong ones with a hook they use to hang up merchandising stuff. It's now on the kitchen radiator and has a tea towel hung on it. Jolly useful.

MadameTricyrtisDefarge · 22/01/2023 16:36

@Kucinghitam, I understand some of Five Elements theory but not in relation to zodiac stuff.

Re rabbits looking like chickens when prepared for cooking, the frozen ones I bought were most definitely rabbits. The four legs and long body were a bit of a give away.

MadameTricyrtisDefarge · 22/01/2023 16:39

Just saw this one. Wow. www.mumsnet.com/talk/education/4725903-iabu-to-sedate-4yo-with-piriton-before-his-entrance-exam

Being a GP's child, me and my siblings were sedated for long car journeys, to stop us fighting and/or being sick, but I didn't think anyone really did that any more.

Winterborne74 · 22/01/2023 16:44

Looks like @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn and I are of an age!

Me too.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 22/01/2023 16:46

I think the 'should I dope my tiny child?' question got a universal 'no' and the poll function seems to have been removed.

I like the response that suggested just getting the child to smoke a spliff instead.

Shame, it was quite entertaining!

Madamedefargelikescrows · 22/01/2023 17:53

I'm a wood snake and apparently very wise and mysterious. It used to bug me that I was a snake because I'm not fond of snakes. At all.

Nope. No idea.

Genuine lol. I actually found myself going through the actions!

bignosebignose · 22/01/2023 18:16

Happy New Year, Kuc. A couple of younger friends of mine and I (Scottish and Irish) have been calling each other Horse for twenty years and I have you to thank for making me finally get around to checking my animal year. Horse. It’s made my day, week, and possibly month.

Kucinghitam · 22/01/2023 18:26

What an excellent coincidence, @bignosebignose!
