What was the first album you ever owned? Would you still listen to it now?

I was reminded of my first album recently, so had a listen on Spotify... interesting experience! Some of it was exciting and great, some utter crap. It was - going all the way back to 1981- Kings of the Wild Frontier by Adam and the Ants. I was 12.

What was your first album, and do you still like it?

1988 Kylie album on a cassette tape
I was 9
Its fairly dated now but I'd still listen to some of it with the kids
I have fairly eclectic tastes and listen to anything from jazz to house with a bit of rock, pop and classical - depends on the mood when I'm listening so my Spotify playlists are very random.

Bat out of Hell... and absolutely. Awesome album!!! (I was 12)

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 29/12/2022 23:35

Can't remember exactly which the first was, but among them numbered Madonna (Madonna), Jackson's 'Thriller', the Scorpions 'Best of Rockers and Ballads', a Roxette one, T'Pau, Fleetwood Mac's 'Tango in the Night' (more of a 'Rumours' person though) and from my mum I inherited Dylan and The Doors, who I still love to this day. Very slightly later moved on to rock and Goth.

I still listen to most of it. The Scorpions and Roxette I'd all-but forgotten but will return to after this thread. T'Pau, no!

Thanks for the nostalgia fest, OP!

Motörhead - Ace of Spades.

I was eight years old and it was given to me by my older cousin who I hero worshipped because he was so cool. Bless him he was 17 or so at the time and always had so much time for me. Along with the album he gave me a Motörhead T Shirt that was big and faded and I wore religiously.

Thrilled my mother was. Absolutely thrilled not
”She’ll grow out of it” was often uttered to my father by her. I never did.

Abba - Arrival. It was on cassette and long since fallen to pieces, but yes I would listen to it if I still had it.

MintyPrincess · 29/12/2022 23:58

Kylie by Kylie Minogue.Wouldnt listen now!,

Theeaglesoared · 30/12/2022 01:12

Rod Stewart - Atlantic Crossing. I still love it.

ALongHardWinter · 30/12/2022 02:44

The first album I ever bought was A New World Record by ELO. This was in 1976,when I was 12, approaching 13. I can't play the vinyl version any more as I have nothing to play it on,but I have the album on my iPod and still listen to tracks from it now and again. To this day,the track 'Tightrope' is one of my all time favourites.

stillvicarinatutu · 30/12/2022 02:59

I got two at the same time
Madonna's like a virgin and Michael Jackson's thriller.

RobertsRadio · 30/12/2022 03:04

Motown Chartbusters - Volume 3, released in 1969. Bought with my wages from my paper round. I've still got that original LP and still love every song on there.

LadyClaude · 30/12/2022 03:08

Joshua Tree, by U2. Great thread, OP. I'm going to have to listen to this tomorrow, and also some other brilliant ones mentioned by other posters, too 🎸

Judgyjudgy · 30/12/2022 03:37

I got Crash Test Dummies as a gift with a walkman which was so cool at the time! It was so random, but I actually quite liked it and would listen to it now

allboysherebutme · 30/12/2022 03:58

Blondie : parallel lines
Rod Steward : Greatest Hits and

Besides the Disney records and an Irish Rovers album it was Loverboy (debut, self-titled), 1980.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/12/2022 05:21

Oh, Grease, Urban Cowboy and Saturday Night Fever with the pull-out book that had the disco dance steps! I guess we liked soundtracks in our house. 🤷‍♀️🤣

beekindx · 30/12/2022 06:00

New kids on the block on vinyl. I loved it and played it on repeat on my parents old record player

Willmafrockfit · 30/12/2022 06:48

I think ELO a NEw World Album was also my first,
i scrapped together the money to buy it, the man in the shop even accepted my boots voucher as payment

FrenchFancie · 30/12/2022 06:55

Ten by Pearl Jam, and doubt by Jesus Jones.

actually I would still listen to them, and will probably do so today, thanks for the reminder!!!

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 30/12/2022 07:11

Spice Girls, who I don’t still listen to 😂.

AnnieRich · 30/12/2022 07:11

Simon & Garfunkel- Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme.
I still listen to Simon & Garfunkel regularly.

anotherusernamethiswerk · 30/12/2022 07:47

I took ownership of my mums vinyl, The Capenters, Carole King, Simon and Garfunkel etc and listened to them on repeat. I'd still know all the words I think. My first album I bought was probably Suzanne Vega, Suzanne Vega. And I still think it's the best album ever.

Kings of the Wild Frontier was my second. First was Boy, by U2.

My first album was Boy, too!
Still think it's a great album.

user2754977 · 30/12/2022 08:39

An Elvis one in the 60s, can't remember which one but I would probably listen to it again

SavouryFlavour · 30/12/2022 09:04

Shake Your Money Maker by the Black Crowes (on CD) I love it when Spotify shuffles up some Twice As Hard or Jealous Again. Or before that, Hard Promises by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers on a cassette from the library spinner.

Really reminds me though how we used to sit through a whole album, back then, listening to the whole track list in order, over and over, until even the filler got lodged in your brain.
