When do you take down the Christmas decorations?

I am always itching to do it on Boxing Day. I don't, but I want to. I usually last until New year's Eve, but I think this year has felt really unchristmassy and I want everything taken down now! I will keep it up for the kids but does anyone else just want it all put away?

12th night, Christmas is only beginning

Parker231 · 26/12/2022 20:09

Just shows what different traditions we all have - for some Christmas has come to an end and for others it’s still a way to go. No right or wrong - just different ways to suit different families

We are going away tomorrow so we took
all the decs down today and cleaned the house top to bottom - excellent Boxing Day exercise!! And I know we'll come back to a clean and tidy house.

How sad! Christmas has only just begun and many people are off work/school for the coming week. Why wouldn't you see this as the festive period? Eat, drink and be merry while you can, before life goes back to normal after new year. But I guess if you've not been able to restrain yourself from acting like it's Christmas for the last month then it's not surprising you're bored with it now.

My thoughts too. This is the chilled, lovely calm of Xmas. The actual nice bit after the stressy, over-commercialised bit. It’s about the only thing I like about Xmas.

echt · 26/12/2022 20:19

The Epiphany. Though I've just been listening to Radio Four's "You're Dead To Me" on the subject of the medieval Christmas, which went on to Candlemas on February 2nd!

Chunkyetfunky90 · 26/12/2022 20:22

Ours went up on the 1sr and I took them down today 🙈, must say I feel much better 😅

Cocolapew · 26/12/2022 20:39

DH was back at work today and the DDs are back tomorrow, not everyone is having a relaxing, chilled week leading up to NY.
It's back to normal for a lot of people.

toomuchlaundry · 26/12/2022 20:41

@Chunkyetfunky90 why do you put them up so early?

I’ve worked every day except Xmas day itself, and won’t get a day off until the schools go back, but still think it’s a relaxing, chilled time. Still got nice food and drink for the evening.

Stressfordays · 26/12/2022 21:02

I'm gonna have to take mine down before new year but normally wait until the 3rd-ish. This is my first year with house rabbits and they've absolutely destroyed the tree. Chewed through the lights, broke baubles. I give up and it will be coming down ASAP. I'll have to re-think tree placement next year.

toomuchlaundry · 26/12/2022 21:08

Most people put the decorations up before they break up from work so why does going back to work signal having to take the decorations down

While most people work right up to christmas eve so have to make time to put them up, many still have time after christmas before work/school starts again.
It is easier taking down decprations while you are still off work.
It's a bit of work, we have 3 trees, the main one is real, so needs to be taken outside.
All the decorations have to be boxed up, ladders up to the lofs, and a good hoovering/cleaning.
I don't want to fit all that into a normal working week.
We dpn't have the luxury of time before christmas, but we do in the space between end of christmas and returning to normal.

AddieLoggins2 · 26/12/2022 21:19

I’m both. They’ve been up since late November but won’t be coming down until 6 January!

Same here.

Each to their own, but personally I find January and February so miserable (I hate New Year!) so I'll keep the sparkle and joy of Christmas as long as I can! It's going to be a long time until the next.

Because it's a chore taking them down isn't it.

Chunkyetfunky90 · 26/12/2022 21:51

@toomuchlaundry didn’t think it was early tbh some people put them up before way before December but ok……..

Chipsahoy · 26/12/2022 21:53

I put ours up straight after thanksgiving, so end of November. They will be up until 6th jan, although real tree (have one real and one fake) may need to go outside in its pot if it starts to droop.

Furries · 26/12/2022 22:37

It’s just me (and the cat) here, so I get to do exactly what I like!

Tree usually goes up mid-December. I love my tree, lifts my spirits and makes the living room look very cosy. I am not a fan of winter either, so anything to brighten the gloom. Tree stays up until Candlemas and then it’s the final push through to brighter skies, longer evenings and flip flops.

autienotnaughty · 26/12/2022 23:17

Goes up last weekend in November, comes down 2nd jan

LibertyLily · 26/12/2022 23:55

6th January always for us....but we didn't put the tree etc up till 18th Dec (the earliest we've ever put the decorations up is 12th December). Winter has only just begun and Christmas isn't just one day (or the whole of December imho). I really can't understand why anyone - unless from the US and celebrating Thanksgiving - would put them up in November or even early December but each to their own. I'm certainly not bored with them but can understand how, if they went up that early, you might be.

For me Thurs 2 Feb... Candlemas... 40 days after christmas and when Medieval England trad took them down ... see poem below and Eng Herit link... started during Covid as so bleak and love our lights and decorations (before then it was Twelfth night)

Ceremony Upon Candlemas Eve, Robert Herrick (1591-1674)

Down with the rosemary, and so

Down with the bays and misletoe;

Down with the holly, ivy, all

Wherewith ye dress’d the Christmas hall;

That so the superstitious find

No one least branch there left behind;

For look, how many leaves there be

Neglected there, maids, trust to me,

So many goblins you shall see.

Lucy worsley said the same. I think she said the only reason it dropped down to the 12 days of Christmas was because they wanted people to get back to work earlier

constantindigestion · 27/12/2022 02:57

Mine came down yesterday- our tree was rubbish this year and was making me feel depressed. Plus cats started attacking it after never bothering in 6 years.

WhatLikeItsHard · 27/12/2022 03:04
