When do you take down the Christmas decorations?

I am always itching to do it on Boxing Day. I don't, but I want to. I usually last until New year's Eve, but I think this year has felt really unchristmassy and I want everything taken down now! I will keep it up for the kids but does anyone else just want it all put away?

Always 12th night. They've been up just over a week.

Same

Athenen0ctua · 26/12/2022 16:14

Lights on my Christmas tree by my front door outside will stay on until Candlemas. January needs them!

BMFH · 26/12/2022 16:30

I will take them down on either the 29th or the 30th. My gran brought me up and it was her birthday on New Years Eve so she used to take down everything but a few gold decorations which she kept out (for New Years Eve)- and do a deep clean before the 31st.... I started doing it again after she died, it's nice (I even bought a few new decorations that I bought especially for New Year so I can have a change! She needed more space for the party she always had. I don't do that unfortunately although I might start one year.

Some people on this thread are easily confused about others doing things differently!

Tree and decorations went up 1st December and will come down 12th night.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 26/12/2022 16:32

30th. Can't stand them up after NYE

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 26/12/2022 16:36

TheBirdintheCave · 26/12/2022 12:59

Ours are up from the first weekend of December until Twelfth Night.

Why take them down on Boxing Day? 🤔 It's only the second day of Christmas! We haven't even got to five gold rings yet 😂

Nah. Christmas starts when the kids break up from school in this house. By NYE is over and done with.

BMFH · 26/12/2022 16:38

That really is extremely pretty @Cocolapew . I think I will take a photo for my next (last) house (hopefully anyway). I love absolutely everything about it! (I already have a very similar rug so I have started!)

crivit · 26/12/2022 16:53

As usual for me, Imbolc, therefore over a month away yet. I love the lights, trees and other decorations and they serve to lighten the darker months until spring begins to arrive.

limitededitionbarbie · 26/12/2022 16:56

New Year's Eve probably or the day before. I'm itching to take it down now.

Had Christmas at my sisters and today I have cleared out my wardrobe, my DD's and all her drawers.
Sitting down watching eastenders now and drinking the half a bottle of champagne left from yesterday morning. Bliss.

Not until Twelfth Night

i really don’t want to cut a festival short

(though of course I understand why those with birthdays before then would want to have them clear of Christmas and its decorations)

But just like its pagan forerunners Christmas- in its full 12 days - is way to stave off the drear gloom for a while

I like this and it's very true. Mine went up first weekend in Dec and I don't want them to cone down until Christmas officially ends. I love the light and warmth of the tree and decorations, it really lifts my spirits. I can't imagine taking them down on Boxing Day. January and February are dreary months.

Excusemegreentea · 26/12/2022 17:01

Trying to chill and slow the pace of life. Usually take down on the 1st, some times the 5th.

Girasoli · 26/12/2022 17:01

Overnight on the 5th Jan, leaving just full stockings in place on the 6th.

NOACF · 26/12/2022 17:03

Always on 6th Jan, 12th night. They go up sometime around mid December.

DillDanding · 26/12/2022 17:04

Ours on went up on Dec 17. I can’t imagine taking them down during this Christmas week.

To much moaning and complaining, ours come down on 1 or 2 Jan.

And I can't imagine leaving them up til Jan. No moaning or complaining about it!

Take them down? Ours only went up on Wednesday!

This really shows the divide I think between the traditionalists (Christmas season is Christmas Eve - Twelfth Night) and the more modern (Christmas season is December 1st-Christmas Day).

Neither is 'wrong' I suppose, but I find the modern way slightly strange. Xmas Grin

I’m both. They’ve been up since late November but won’t be coming down until 6 January!

RocketIceLollie · 26/12/2022 18:37

Day after Boxing Day usually here.

BonjourPetitPois · 26/12/2022 18:41

2nd Jan before going back to work.

dottydoglover · 26/12/2022 18:48

Always New Year's Day ,, they've been up since 1 Dec but I try not to go to over the top so they are not intrusive Blush

teapotfullofsquash · 26/12/2022 18:49

My tree is outside today. It's real and in a pot so while its actually relatively warm I thought best to get it out now to acclimatise 🤣 (my excuse) I'd like the rest down but the kids want them up. Birthday in the house beginning of Jan so I like it all away before then!

Bestcatmum · 26/12/2022 18:50

I never put them up. It's a fantastic relief.

ScottishLavender · 26/12/2022 19:02

12th Night. They didn't go up until Christmas Eve anyway so they've only been up 5 minutes!

toomuchlaundry · 26/12/2022 19:03

If you have children why don’t you keep them up over the Christmas holiday? Surely they are still in Christmas mode. We are 12th Night family

Even they've had enough by NYE

Roominmyhouse · 26/12/2022 19:50

I hate taking them down. The house seems so dark and bare when they’ve done. I love how cosy all the Christmas lights make the house feel. So mine will be staying up until 12th night.
