Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Good stuff @CyanCyan

I have never liked Stewart Lee, Mr Monkey and i disagree on this. I actually walked out of one of his shows at the int----erval and went home I disliked it so much.

duc748 · 23/12/2022 14:05

What strikes me now is that over there there is a hell of a lot of what you might call "tucking thumbs into waistcoat and pronouncing", IYKWIM. Compared to many posts I've read here which get to the nub of the issues with great clarity and precision.

Britinme · 23/12/2022 14:29

Sorry for your bathroom woes @Kucingsparkles - awful timing. I hope you can get some kind of fix in.

Re the old place - my husband still goes there but is on such a limited range of threads he probably wouldn't have noticed any of us were gone.

I'd like to think (but maybe I'm just an optimist) that time will eventually show that our concerns were justified.

duc748 · 23/12/2022 16:09

Meanwhile it's bottling day at moto breweries. I've got another small batch that needs bottling tomorrow, but I'm running out of empties!

Nice. How long does it need to sit before you can drink it?

duc748 · 23/12/2022 17:13

About a month. Will be fine for my birthday in early Feb. 😀

Tricyrtis2022 · 23/12/2022 17:24

That sounds pretty good, you're well prepared!

IReallyLikeCrows · 23/12/2022 18:04

@Kucingsparkles I really hope your bathroom can be sorted out, that absolutely sucks!

Thanks all for the loveliness. I am still pretty rough but I do think I'm coming out the other side. My throat is still sore but swallowing doesn't make me want to cry. Cough is worse but that's bearable. I think my temperature has regulated, etc. I'm not well but I'm definitely doing better. I do have white spots in my mouth but I'm constantly getting those so given my throat is healing it's probably not strep throat. Thankfully! I have ongoing problems with oral thrush and oesophageal thrush. It's a joy. I think I'm going to be fine. I'll register with a GP next week which I need to do anyway as I'm on quite a few drugs and I'll get myself some Benylin tomorrow. Thank you all again for thinking of me.

CyanCyan · 23/12/2022 20:14

Glad you’re on the mend @IReallyLikeCrows x

I was in Pets at Home earlier buying Kasper a little Christmas dinner when a bloke walked past coughing and sneezing in my direction, not even attempting to contain any of it with a sleeve or tissue. He then said to the woman he was with, ‘I really should’ve stayed at home with this coronavirus’. I’m not sure if he was ‘joking’ or not, but either way he’s a twat.

mach2 · 23/12/2022 22:16

Mach has been attempting to reason with them - such a waste of his energy, he should come back here.

To be honest I was also baiting them. Taking a bit of pique out because they're so fucking smug. Simplistic debating devices so hackneyed I could recognise them deaf and blind.

"You don't think Clarkson is a literal terrorist - you're defending him!"

I know exactly what to say to draw certain kinds of fire. Yes, it's bloody childish of me but I'm piqued.

IReallyLikeCrows · 23/12/2022 22:49

I've booked myself a ticket to see It's a Wonderful Life at one of my local cinemas tomorrow. I've seen it on a big screen before and it's magical. I'm looking forward to a couple of hours of loveliness.

That's a great idea!

My Christmas decoration is up. Actually it’s two decorations, I forgot about the bauble which was a gift last Christmas.

Thanks everyone. Our temporary solution is to stop using the main bathroom!

At some point this [What do we call it? Postmas? Twixmas?] I will go shopping for sealant from Wilko. One thing I can do is wield a sealant gun! Although, if the leak isn't due to the sealant around the bath, it'll be a professional job: the entire bath side panel is tiled to match the walls and completely grouted into the surrounding walls and floor, so even if we were to bash it off ourselves and by some miracle know how to re-seal the waste pipes, we couldn't put it back.

We have our small en suite shower room that everyone will use. It is also getting a bit old as it was the first room we did when we moved in; used to be WOW SHINY but now is in need of some small remedial works (paint, re-sealing just-in-case, managed to chip a tile, showerhead-holder-rail-thing is wobbly).

But meanwhile! Merry Christmas Eve to all!

We're going to roast all the veg and potatoes this evening, stick them in overproof serving dishes and cover with foil to reheat tomorrow. Must remember to take the braised red cabbage and the pigs in blankets out of the freezer.

DH also wants to make a Yule log today, because two different flavours of Christmas pudding, several boxes of mince pies, a panettone, 4 bags of Lebkuchen, 2 bags of Pfeffernusse, a home-made boozy Christmas cake and a huge gingerbread house just aren't enough sweet things. I may put my foot down.

Glad you're on the mend Crows and alittle jealous you get to see It's A Wonderful Life on a big screen. Hope your bathroom woes end soon Kuc.

Mach, I got exactly the same, and I mean exactly the same treatment when I didn't agree Elon MUsk buying Twitter was the worst thing to befall humanity. I've been so loving the breadth of opinion you can find over here on the old mumsnets.

mach2 · 24/12/2022 06:36

Glad you're on the mend Crows

Yes, I'm glad that throat infection is subsiding. I still think it's a bloody scandal that medical help is so hard to get.

Ah, you must be literal fascist 🤣

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/12/2022 07:02

Well I have been up early with towels as a blocked rainwater drain plus very heavy rain yesterday resulted in one of our entrance halls flooding.

Hopefully that mopping and my neighbour grubbing out a load of leaves from the drain will have fixed it. Otherwise we will have to get our caretaker out and pay an emergency fee.

Why do these things always happen at Christmas. 😣

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/12/2022 07:05

@Kucingsparkles glad you have a bathroom alternative. Boggling slightly at the tiles and sealed bath panel - who does that?

Well possibly my upstairs neighbour who tiled in her water stopcock which was obviouslt very handy when she had a water leak that ended up coming through our bathroom ceiling.

Kucingsparkles · 24/12/2022 07:05

Oh no @Ginmonkeyagain! Fingers crossed the quick fix has sorted it!

Boggling slightly at the tiles and sealed bath panel - who does that?

The previous owner Artistic Lydia, a bleeding genius at building matters and interior design.

[Background: Whilst cleaning the window frames not long after we moved in, I found a sticky labels that the window company must have attached to identify the client during manufacture: the client had been referred to as "Artistic Lydia" - this tells you all you need to know about her various design choices, neglect of actual physical building maintenance in favour of 'style' and level of job-bodging.]

Every time we go to use some shit part of the kitchen or bash a hip on a badly-planned bit of bathroom, etc, we shout "Fucking Artistic Lydia!" (or other, milder epithet when the DC are in hearing range).

The Gremlins watch, and know well when we're at our weakest.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/12/2022 07:54

Lol at Artisitc Lynda!

Other people's choices are always interesting. The previous owner of this flat glued the hall carpet to bare concrete!

That sounds delightful. I love that film. I saw it as a play a few years ago and they did a fantastic job of recreating the story on stage.

Tricyrtis2022 · 24/12/2022 09:20

Artistic Lydia sounds like a bit of a pain in the arse.

The previous inhabitants of this house painted the walls dark green which must have made it so dark, as it's pretty cave-like to begin with. The landlord also had carpet glued to the concrete floors, with no underlay. We have rugs, lots of them. The cold that comes up through the floor makes me realise why you see people in old paintings with their feet up on foot stools.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/12/2022 09:26

Gosh - there is more than one carpet idiot in this world. Luckly as we own we replaced the hall carpet with nice thick berber twist wool carpet with acoustic underlay.

It only cost £650 with enough carpet left over for three mats to be put in high traffic areas (it is a long but narrow hallway) which makes their bodge more infuriating.
