Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Oh God! at the glued carpet tiles. It's brought forth a long suppressed memory of 16 year old me having to remove them from a kitchen, along with scraping the glue off the concrete.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/12/2022 09:37

It's clearly one of those days. My neighbour and I are key holders for each other. He rang me earlier in a panic saying the flat downstairs have reported water had started dripping in through their ceiling from his bathroom.

Our block has concrete ceilings and floors so it would take a pretty hefty and catastrophic water leak for water to appear suddenly (then whe that happens it tends to appear via the light fittings).
I went in to his bathroom and could find nothing. All was dry - no burst pipes, leaks or even damp smell at all.

Went to the flat downstairs which was cold and the bathroom did indeed have some drips of water coming off an internal concrete beam. The bathroom also had windows shut and evidence of a recent very hot and prolonged bath or shower.

I offered advice on heating and ventilating rooms adequately and left muttering under my breath about idiots.

When we bought this house 24 years ago, the whole ground floor was covered in a thin grey no-underlay carpet, kitchen, bathroom and all. Just a day or two after moving in, I was taking something out of the Aga, had nowhere to put the oven shelf, so put it on the floor for a moment. Obviously (although it hadn’t been obvious to me), the carpet melted into a perfect outline of the Aga shelf. When the people we bought it off dropped round a few days later, they said “That was a brand new carpet!” in a very disapproving and annoyed manner.

UnfortunatePoster · 24/12/2022 09:59

Ahead of their time having a grey carpet 24 years ago!

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/12/2022 10:19

Carpet in front of a Aga????? Who does that?

At my dad's house the kitchen floor is tiled with terracotta tiles and there is a surround of fire proof glazed bricks around the Aga.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/12/2022 10:22

All ALL "wet" rooms should have floor coverings that can withstand water, heat and heavy cleaning. Who are these absolute freaks who carpet bathrooms?

Tricyrtis2022 · 24/12/2022 10:23

We put down a speckled grey carpet where we lived 33 years ago.

angelico53 · 24/12/2022 10:25

Very envious of going to see IAWL on the silver screen, crows.

And moto's beer is a thing of wonder!

My dear angelica, who is the most thoughtful person in the world, has been thinking and pondering and buying and sending back and buying again and wrapping for at least a month. But I'm quite worried about her health (she has RA), which has been getting worse this year. Her wrists and shoulders are now extremely painful - her hips and one knee have been bad for 30 years.

There doesn't seem to be anything to be done. She can't tolerate the usual stuff like methotrexate. No alt-med stuff has ever worked. Would that I had a magic wand or I could make a deal with god, get him to swap our places.

She's got a few days off, at any rate. What would be a good Christmas movie to watch under the tree as the light outside dims? Should be gorgeous here today - we can see the sun go down over Liverpool and the Welsh mountains when it's clear here.

Here's me tree:

There's very cheap laminate in the kitchen ofy rented house that won't bear contact with a leak.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/12/2022 10:30

Laminate is terrible stuff.

Tricyrtis2022 · 24/12/2022 10:47

Fabulous tree, angelico!

How about watching 'A Matter of Life and Death', that's a great film.

duc748 · 24/12/2022 10:52

At my previous Hovel, the kitchen was carpeted. Which turned out as well as you'd expect. But after wrestling with my mobe just now, I have successfully copied Crows and a recliner seat for IAWL awaits this afternoon. Which has thrown all my food prep plans into chaos, but WTF.

Tricyrtis2022 · 24/12/2022 10:57

Bladdy basts, off to the pictures! We're about to set off to visit family, but I will dream of sitting cosily and watching a film instead.

Tricyrtis2022 · 24/12/2022 11:11

Before we go, have a lovely time everyone! See you in a couple of days.

Dotellhimpike · 24/12/2022 11:27

One of my presents for Mrs Pike is a blue ray box set of M.R. James' Ghost Stories for Christmas BBC adaptations. That should see us right for viewing tomorrow.

duc748 · 24/12/2022 12:05

Also first time at cinema since cataracts done! 4k restoration. 😀

duc748 · 24/12/2022 12:11

Also, I am loving Artistic Lydia, and am imagining her as a Quentin Blake illustration 😀

StephanieSuperpowers · 24/12/2022 12:25

PLEASE stop making me jealous with your beautiful, calm, organised, lovely homes.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/12/2022 13:02

Ha - yes, I've been thinking they all look impossibly grown up. Be reassured, mine is not.

There's a reason I don't post pictures of my place... 😁

Britinme · 24/12/2022 13:58

@angelico53 - I used to get arthritis in my right knee (and had an x-Ray showing the damage, as my right leg is half a inch shorter than my left). My doctor recommended me to take turmeric capsules as well as the resveratrol capsules and liquid glucosamine I was already taking ("if you're going to take supplements these have some research behind them") and that combo made a big difference to me, but took a few weeks to have the full effect. The knee really doesn't bother me these days. I'm slightly older than you if 53 is your birth year.

angelico53 · 24/12/2022 14:09

Many thanks for that, Brit. I'm so desperate for her. Just moving one of her wrists in a wrong direction for a second or two is torture. I think I'll suggest that combination.

She's younger than I by some years, btw, but your guess for me was spot on!

I'm afraid I can't place your username, Brit. JtT handle?

Britinme · 24/12/2022 14:31

@angelico53 - I used to be Jenny28

SqueakyDinosaur · 24/12/2022 14:33

Has angelica tried acupuncture? I've been having it to help with osteoarthritis pain exacerbated by chemotherapy last year, and much to my surprise it has helped.

Britinme · 24/12/2022 14:38

I do take the three supplements every day and noticed the effect after the first six weeks or so of taking all three. (Synflex is liquid glucosamine and I take 1/4 oz a day though for the first month you take 1/2 oz), 2 capsules of Resveratrol 1450 and 1 of turmeric/curcumin with bioperine made by Vimerson, which I get from Amazon.
