Thread 3 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

Kucingsparkles · 21/12/2022 06:14

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

'kin hell Kuc, I got the Eastenders drums after reading your post.

Tricyrtis2022 · 23/12/2022 09:33

Oh no, what a horrible thing to have right now, Kuc! Hope you get it fixed soon.

Our neighbour had a bathroom leak in the summer while they were away and it turned out that a seal had gone in the toilet. Fortunately we were going in to pick up their post and whatnot so we turned the water off.

UnfortunatePoster · 23/12/2022 09:43

Oh no Kuc! Fingers crossed for a quick plumber and fix. We had a similar issue with our bath a couple of years ago, but it turned out to be gaps in the sealant round the bath. DH did a piss poor bodge job on it (there was silicon sealant EVERYWHERE), which fixed the leak but looked horrible. After about a year of ignoring it, it took me a few days to get rid of it all and reseal more neatly.

angelico53 · 23/12/2022 09:49

Good luck to everyone with leaks and bugs of all descriptions!

I just wanted to comment about the old place. All the headlines this morning are about the GRA in Scotland; some of them are even aware of potential risks.

Not a mention at the old place. A place to "discuss the issues of the day in depth".

Strange. But not as strange as the way posters I've known and even met and liked have accepted censorship ans misogyny without a second thought.

Dotellhimpike · 23/12/2022 09:54

The Traitors is probably the biggest, most talked about show of the year. I looked over there and there's about thirty or so posts about it. People keep saying that once you get past the controversial topics the place is still thriving but there was a time when a thread about a show like The Traitors would have hundreds of posts per episode. The place seems moribund compared to here. I know a lot of people use it for support regarding mental health and family things, I hope it's still that for them at least.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 23/12/2022 10:03

To me the atmosphere over there reminds me of a long-ago workplace with a massive, all-pervasive bullying problem, where everyone was constantly looking over their shoulders for fear of being overheard.

All the techie ingenuity in the world won't rescue the site unless they do some serious work of the culture of misogny specifically and laddish hate speech more generally when the new bosses take over in the Spring.

Shame really.

Tricyrtis2022 · 23/12/2022 10:13

Elderberry, your first paragraph sums it up perfectly.

I'm still FB friends with a few posters from there, ones who didn't speak up and one who even thought JTS was right. It feels weird.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 23/12/2022 10:21

I'm still posting over there on inconsequential topics. And on the Clarkson thread, where a few people have commented on the pervasive misogyny of some of their fellow posters. I exercised steely self control and didn't say a thing.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 23/12/2022 10:22

Mach has been attempting to reason with them - such a waste of his energy, he should come back here.

SinnerBoy · 23/12/2022 10:25

How are you feeling, Crows? Slightly less awful, I hope.

SinnerBoy · 23/12/2022 10:26

That sounds like me, I redid our bath and eventually, my wife pulled it out and did it neatly. I'm good at decorating, but cannot get the hang of silicon sealer!

Dotellhimpike · 23/12/2022 10:27

Same for me Crows, hope you're feeling better.

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/12/2022 10:35

@DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry I was boggling at the conclusion from many that it was perfectly fine to direct vile misogyny and sexual insults at Sarah Vine and Nadine Dorries as they are right wing and therefore probably deserve it.

Dotellhimpike · 23/12/2022 10:40

The reasoning that Stewart Lee didn't explcitly say Sarah Vine's name when comparing sex with a DM journalist to sex with a dead pig was complete bullshit. Imagine for one second he'd made an oblique reference to a DM journalist that happened to be black, being a savage or a monkey? There is no way in hell people wouldn't have called him out for it and rightly so, so why is he allowed to be sleekit when it's about a woman?

I'm fucking sick of ostensibly left wing and prgressive blokes thinking their little legalese get out clause makes all sorts of vile misogyny OK.

Tricyrtis2022 · 23/12/2022 10:41

it took me a few days to get rid of it all and reseal more neatly.

I need to do that here. Mr T made a right mess of the sealant round the bath taps, he just blobbed it on and spread it about a bit. It looks terrible. I've got the remover and some fresh sealant but have yet to get around to starting the job as I'm dreading the faff. I've told him that, from now on, this is my job and he's not to get involved.

Tricyrtis2022 · 23/12/2022 10:42

Bless Mach for trying but he's talking to a brick wall and would be better off here. What reaction is he getting?

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 23/12/2022 10:45

Nothing rational.

It's all about the Two Minutes Hate, and does make me wonder what Orwell knew about the culture and processes engendered by Eton and its imitators.

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/12/2022 10:48

Well yesterday some were whitesplaing to Chank about racism.

Now I have had my disagreements with Chamk and he is a bit of a wind up merchant but he is a thoughtful poster who has been open about racism he has experienced. It was pretty shameful for people to deny him his experience and opinion.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 23/12/2022 11:36

I felt that Chank was letting his misogyny, romanic view of monarchy, and anti-Americanism paint him into a corner where the foundational racism of the British Empire and by extension its admirers and beneficiaries had to be denied.

I have no idea whether any of that reflects his true opinions, but it is certainly the argument he's been making for the last couple of days. Being a wind-up merchant means detachment from any obligation to truth. Not a good place to be imo.

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/12/2022 13:00

Ummm.

Not my interpertation at all tbh.

CyanCyan · 23/12/2022 13:22

@Ginmonkeyagain Just had a good laugh about an email from the managing agents that has been sent to residents today:

Dear All Leaseholders, Known Letting Agents and Known Tenants,
I hope you are all well and looking forward to a nice Christmas.
It has been brought to our attention that a number of personal items are being left /disposed of in the communal area of the car park. Please find the photos attached.
Under the terms of the lease this is prohibited as it causes an increased risk to life if there were to be a fire.
This area within the building is not owned by any individual leaseholder and is in fact owned by the freeholder of the building.
We kindly request that these personal items are removed immediately and not stored in the commonway for any period of time.

If these items are not removed immediately, we may have no option other than to instruct a contractor to have these items removed and disposed of accordingly.

I have responded with a moderately pass-agg email echoing his language and have requested a copy of the most recent fire safety assessment, and also attached photos of the meter room. I've told him that I'm informing the freeholder and have been in touch with the local fire brigade who are visiting to perform a fire safety inspection. I've just written to the freeholder now, I can't imagine they'll be very pleased.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that I challenged a ridiculous threat of liability sent to residents for any damage arising from a structural defect within our building, asking him to please inform us of where this is stated in our lease and also the legal basis on which the threat is built. He still hasn't got back to me. I'm sick of people like this.

duc748 · 23/12/2022 13:44

Good work there, CyanCyan!

Chank is an odd one, but he has been spot-on about the wilful misrepresentation of the old Thread Of Hate (sic), and understands women's concerns perfectly well.

And great plumbers do exist: I had a similar, but much less serious problem with sealing around the bath, and he did a cracking job fitting some beading in that to neatly cover it, and it went from eyesore to pretty tidy, and I said, how much do I owe you mate, and he said, I don't like stinging people on little jobs like this, just give me 20 quid!

duc748 · 23/12/2022 13:48

I've not seen the mention on JTT, but is now the right time to repeat that I never liked Stewart Lee and his his schtick? Was full of fanbois over there, though.

Tricyrtis2022 · 23/12/2022 13:52

Nice one, Cyan!

Tricyrtis2022 · 23/12/2022 13:52

I so, so don't miss the other place and am very glad indeed to be here instead.
