Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Which I’m enjoying very much* 🙄

SqueakyDinosaur · 07/01/2023 11:59

May I recommend the Meme thread in the Royal Family topic, and especially this:

Winterborne74 · 07/01/2023 12:39

I saw that on Twitter. Very good.

The Woman They Could Not Silence sounds right up my street. I’m a very slow reader these days though so my list of books grows far more rapidly than I can keep pace. I blame the internet! Both for distracting me and reducing my attention span for reading - but also for making me aware of loads of stuff I theoretically want to read (evidence says otherwise though!) so making the list of unread stuff ever longer. Am currently struggling through On Gallows Down guardianbookshop.com/on-gallows-down-9781645021162 . It touches on loads of history and political things I am interested in, and she writes beautifully about the landscape - but am less taken with the big chunks of biographical stuff.

MavisMcMinty · 07/01/2023 13:19

Wanna see pics of Caspar, Crows, at least one a day while still cute.

I have felt something approaching euphoria several times this year already, not entirely sure why, but probably finally having a lovely lodger whose money will at least meet the bills and who so far hasn’t once jogged past my kitchen window to obsessively check the post box every 15 minutes from 10.30 onwards, even though the postman never arrives between 12.30 and is often as late as 14.30. (That was my last lodger, who decided once here that he’d pay us £100 a month less than we’d asked because of all the fucking SPIDERS.)

The lodgers before that left us with a £4,400 electricity bill and they weren’t even cannabis farming.

SinnerBoy · 07/01/2023 13:30

Weren't even cannabis farming!

😆😆😆

Tricyrtis2022 · 07/01/2023 13:49

because of all the fucking SPIDERS

That's weird. Our place is spider central and it doesn't bother me at all, apart from the cobwebs, those are a bit annoying when they get dusty.

As for the £4,400 what one earth were they doing?

Britinme · 07/01/2023 13:50

On Gallows Down sounds excellent. I'm also a much slower reader than I used to be, but can't break the book-buying habit. I can't die yet and leave all this stuff unread so I shall probably live to at least 100.

Another vote for pictures of Caspar :-)

MavisMcMinty · 07/01/2023 14:19

They spent £4,400 on electricity because they never turned anything off. They burnt out one electric shower by leaving it on all the time - never offered anything towards a new one. They broke the washing machine - never offered anything towards a new one. They broke 2 storage heaters (ditto). They twice managed to turn off the shared freezer in the garage, never offered anything towards the £100s of meat I had to chuck out. They left the lights on all day when they were out. But mainly it’s because they left the hot water on for 2.5 years, which only feeds the kitchen sink and bathroom sink anyway, nothing vital, on the occasions we’ve had to use the annexe ‘cos our Aga blows itself out periodically, I boiled a fucking kettle to do the washing up, don’t need the hot water turned on, and current lodger understands this.

MavisMcMinty · 07/01/2023 14:23

Still, we live and learn, innit.

Gonners · 07/01/2023 14:36

They burnt out one electric shower by leaving it on all the time

What? That is quite seriously weird. I suppose if you just happen to be wandering around naked and suddenly fancy a shower, it saves the minute or so it would otherwise take for the water to heat up, but still ...

MavisMcMinty · 07/01/2023 14:39

It takes just seconds to heat up! Think my problem there was showing teenage son how to work the shower rather than his mother, although it turned out she was as flaky and inconsiderate as him.

SinnerBoy · 07/01/2023 14:39

How in the name of blinkety flip do you break not one, but two storage heaters?

MavisMcMinty · 07/01/2023 14:41

I suppose the heaters might have just conked out by themselves, but because of all the other fuckery - how do you break a washing machine? - I feel it appropriate to blame them for breaking the heaters too. Probably left those on for 2.5 years too.

Tricyrtis2022 · 07/01/2023 14:43

Blimey, Mavis, they sound like the lodgers from hell. Were they idiots?

IReallyLikeCrows · 07/01/2023 14:59

Going back a few posts. I love Jurgen Klopp.

Casper is here and I've just found where he's hiding and has been for nearly three hours. Francis also hid under the bed. Photos will happen when he decides to risk coming out.

I'm going to tempt him with some Dreamies.

MavisMcMinty · 07/01/2023 15:04

If I’d’ve been on MN at the time I’d’ve definitely done an AIBU. I really liked her, she’d just bought a barn at the other end of the bridleway to convert into a house and we became friends. They were living in a camper van on site but struggled to get planning permission, and that September was really freezing, so macman and I decided we’d offer them our annexe “for the winter” at £250 a month. Our electricity bill doubled from £75 a month to £150, but thought that reasonable as everything in the annexe is electric while ours is oil/log-burner heated, just electric lights and electrical sockets. Anyway, that “for the winter” turned into 2.5 years, without another meter reading as the meter was in the annexe.

Anyway, after a couple of years she suddenly went incommunicado, avoiding us completely, although it took me a while to notice that I hadn’t spoken to or seen her for weeks. I assumed she hadn’t been able to pay the rent (she was completely skint) and was embarrassed, but when the bank statement came she was still paying, so I asked her what was wrong and she said “Nothing!” but clearly we’d done something heinous, so eventually I lost my rag and said if they could find somewhere else for £250 including bills (council tax alone is £200+ a month) then please feel free to move out, otherwise I’d have to double the rent. She left us a note in the post box to say she’d moved out!

It was only then that I did a meter reading and found out we owed £4,400. Our DD went up to £408 a month! I’d borrowed £5K from my lovely generous Dad to tart up the annexe and replace all the things they’d destroyed/worn out, and had to spend it all on the fucking EDF bill! After they’d gone our leccy use went down to £100…

Sorry, long, boring and now quite an old story, they left in April 2021, and I don’t even walk past their place any more in case I see her and fly at her in a rage.

MavisMcMinty · 07/01/2023 15:10

In my pettier moments I sometimes consider telling the council they’re illegally living in their incomplete barn without paying council tax, but she’d know it was me. I told only one other neighbour about all this - the village gossip. Deliberately.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 07/01/2023 15:18

How awful Mavis, especially after your kindness: no wonder you're angry with her.

MavisMcMinty · 07/01/2023 15:22

macman was sick of her very quickly, and I kept defending her, and saying “oh they’ll be gone soon, just leave it”. He even laboured on her build for a few weeks and she didn’t pay him for much of it (he just wanted her gone and if that meant building her fucking house for her then so be it).

Britinme · 07/01/2023 15:23

I had a bad tenant like that, who ended up costing me over $20k in lost rent and legal expenses and unnecessary bedbug treatments (he was under the impression that if he said there were bedbugs he didn't have to pay rent and couldn't be evicted - when we finally got to court our lawyer disabused him). He had started out as a friend too, and had even stayed with us (rent free) for two years before he moved into the apartment. I still Google him occasionally to steam.

MavisMcMinty · 07/01/2023 15:27

Wow, @Britinme ! My Dad said we should take her to the small claims court to try and get some of our money back but I just couldn’t be arsed. It was a learning experience, but the next lodger was weird in a very different way…

Tricyrtis2022 · 07/01/2023 17:22

What a frustrating story about that lodger and sad it all went so horribly wrong. It's horrible having that awkwardness in your community.

Dotellhimpike · 07/01/2023 18:33

Bugger bad lodgers!

Glad all lurgies are in retreat.

Caspar pics ASAP Crows! (please)

Oh, and I am finally in the process of moving, today we tested paint samples for the living room, will paint it early next week, and within the next two weeks I should be pretty much moved in.

Anyway, here is one of my favourite bits about my house (MY HOUSE!) There are glass brick panels in the living room.

Crumbs, you don't half live, Mavis! What a nightmare, and after your kindness. People are weird.

I can detect a certain excitement about the new house, pike.

At angelic towers, we have just eaten some rather odd sweets someone gave us, called "Calibo" or something like that. Quite tasty; I wonder what could be in them?

angelico53 · 07/01/2023 18:46

Also, rotten for you too, Brit. Twenty K and bedbugs. Jeez.
