Thread 3 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

Kucingsparkles · 21/12/2022 06:14

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Afternoon all, just popping in to let you know that apart from still having a bit of a cough, but far, far less than at its height, I am fully recovered. I just wanted to let you know because you were all lovely when I was ridiculously poorly. Anyway, off out to pick up a parcel that I'm not convinced is for me, so either pick up or tell the post office to send back, so laters lovelies.

Tricyrtis2022 · 06/01/2023 15:42

Glad you're feeling better, Crows.

We're feeling better too, but still pondering how so much snot can be produced in such a short time.

duc748 · 06/01/2023 16:49

I'm in the same boat as Mavis, used to do big miles when working, but bought a car with under 10k on the clock, and figure it'll be my last car. Only difference is, I didn't get rid of the 150k+ Alfa! Sentiment as much as anything else.

Britinme · 06/01/2023 16:51

I do a very low mileage - my car is 2016 and currently has about 41000 miles on the clock.

Britinme · 06/01/2023 16:52

That might not look so low in UK terms but in US terms average mileage is 10,000 miles a year due to absence of public transport in most places outside cities (and even inside some).

SinnerBoy · 06/01/2023 17:04

Glad to hear of your improvement, Oney!

Tricyrtis2022 · 06/01/2023 17:13

figure it'll be my last car

Arf, my dad used to say this every time he bought a new car - 'Oh well, this will do me now, I won't need to buy another one'. He did it for about 30 years.

Britinme · 06/01/2023 17:17

It is quite disconcerting when you know people around your age dying off but also people still alive twenty or thirty years older.

duc748 · 06/01/2023 17:22

I am old, though, Tric! Gianluca Vialli dying at only 58 gave me pause for thought, though.

Tricyrtis2022 · 06/01/2023 17:47

Agree that people younger than oneself dying is disconcerting. Also realising that various actors/writers are actually younger than me.

And I have to admit that whilst I'm a mere smear at 61, I'm already looking at things around the house and wondering if they'll need replacing before I cark it.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 06/01/2023 18:45

Can anyone beat my 2007 car with 28k on the clock?

Glad the various lurgies mainly seem to be in retreat. Hope your follows suit soon, mach.

On my walk past the charity shop today I spotted 2 gold disks in the window - the full framed presentation sort with record, cover, photo and autograph. You'd think that sort of thing would do better at auction rather than stuck in the window in an admittedly affluent but really very small town. One is Madonna, priced at £250; the other Elvis, priced at £900.

I didn't buy them.

duc748 · 06/01/2023 18:49

Rough mental arithmetic suggests my 2016 car with 12k on the clock is about equivalent, Bint.

Ooh: we have a load on the wall where I work! Even when you are only very tangential to a gold disc, you used to get one.

Oops wrong quote!

CyanCrystalViolet · 06/01/2023 20:06

My car has nearly 100k on the clock and I’m not sure at what point I should think about selling it. I like my car very much (Volvo C30) and don’t do many miles, though this may change in the future if I get a placement in a hospital in another area. It’s very reliable, haven’t had a single problem, so my only concern is that it will become uneconomical to repair at which point I’ll get very little for it. Should I hang on to it until it gives up the ghost? To be honest I’d probably replace it with another C30 as I like them so much, although they discontinued them so the latest models are getting on for 10 years old now.

MavisMcMinty · 06/01/2023 20:32

I gave my last car to my sister, worked out well, her car conked out just as I retired, and I could drive macman’s while I waited for mine to be delivered. It lasted her another few years then when that one carked it, she found through the friend of a friend a 12-year old Honda Jazz with just 1400 miles on the clock, yes, 1400, one-four-oh-oh, belonging to an old lady who drove into town once a week to the supermarket and walked/got the bus everywhere else.

IReallyLikeCrows · 06/01/2023 21:33

The parcel wasn't for me but it made me smile because it was for a Mr Alex Hamilton and in my head I'm singing "Alexander Hamilton". I very cleverly managed to head out just as it started to rain. Halfwit.

Kucingsparkles · 07/01/2023 06:11

Got woken up at 4:30am by a WhatApp call from my dad (he has Alzheimer's):

"Did you try to call me? I saw on my phone there was a call from you! Are you OK??"

"No Dad, you called me yesterday, we had a whole conversation. You're returning your own call."

We bought a jazz with about 3000 miles on it, was immaculate. Almost 6 years later it has about 30k and has a bit of wear and tear. It will be 10 in august.

IReallyLikeCrows · 07/01/2023 11:13

Alzheimer's is a bastard disease.

I've managed to have very little sleep mostly because I started reading a book that has me gripped. I nodded off reading it and woke about an hour later with it still on the right page. Excellent sitting up and not moving sleeping skills. Woken by Francis demanding some food and then a WhatsApp message from my old neighbour - who is in fact very young, all of 21 - asking if she can come over and drop off a little black cat called Casper who is being rehomed with Francis and me. I've known casper since he was a couple of days old. I didn't want another cat but he needs a new home and he's met Francis and likes him so we'll see how it goes. I'm going to have to get him snipped. Funnily enough he's roughly the same age as Francis was when he was rehomed with me.

IReallyLikeCrows · 07/01/2023 11:16

Oh, the book! It's called The Woman They Could Not Silence and it's about a woman called Elizabeth Packard who was put in an asylum (in 1860) by her husband when after 21 years of marriage she found her voice and didn't just agree with everything he said any longer. It's so well written. It's almost like reading a novel. Highly recommend.

CyanCrystalViolet · 07/01/2023 11:22

Aww welcome little Casper. We will require photographic evidence.

That book sounds great, thanks for the recommendation.

angelico53 · 07/01/2023 11:23

I've been enjoying Anthony Quinn books this week. Molly and the Captain was terrific. Curtain Call also very good, and My Liverpool Love Affair is great if ypu like Jurgen Klopp. (I do).

angelico53 · 07/01/2023 11:23

This!

CyanCrystalViolet · 07/01/2023 11:30

After finally finishing Sapiens I’m now reading Homo Deus which I’m very much. I read so much for university that I don’t tend to read for pleasure anymore, so his books offer a nice middle ground mixture of medical science and entertainment.
