Thread 3 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

Kucingsparkles · 21/12/2022 06:14

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Anyone seen this thread? www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4711458-mil-upset-about-no-sleepovers-after-decorating-a-room-for-dd

The MIL sounds deranged, demanding her daughter in law's tiny baby overnight twice a week. What a horrible situation.

I was reading that earlier!

@Gonners

What the council prob mean is, when the tax runs out, they'll come along and wheel-clamp it. Which will be no help to you, of course. Have you tried the police?

Thanks, moto. I think I'll start with the County Council's "community warden", who may have access to whether or not it's stolen. If not, it may "merely" belong to some local who has died, unnoticed ... in which case the community warden is the man for for job! Yes, I remain heartless.

A link I saw here the other day to a podcast of guys praising Musk for 'bringing free speech back to Twitter ' (in the context of letting Graham Linehan back) gave me pause for thought. Then there were warm words for Jordan Peterson...

I don't really care what the likes of Musk and Peterson think, they are arseholes.

I think I’ve mentioned it before but Helen Joyce on Peterson’s podcast was a good conversation. I (and indeed evidently she) don’t agree with everything he says but he does seem to “get” this issue. Arsehole or not, he knows how to make a decent argument and string a sentence together where the words mean what they ought to mean.

Dotellhimpike · 03/01/2023 21:37

If you are in favour of free speech then it means free speech for arseholes like Peterson, that's simply the long and short of it. Much as I don't care for him or his views, I have always been very uncomfortable with self appointed guardians of big social media companies deciding who I get to listen to, for my own good.

duc748 · 03/01/2023 21:42

Tbf Peterson is hardly short of platforms to say his piece.

SinnerBoy · 03/01/2023 21:46

Perhaps we should rename the thread: JTT Exiles and MOT Woes.....

SqueakyDinosaur · 03/01/2023 22:16

I need to take my ancient car for MOT and service. Last year I had to get the engine basically rebuilt which was HORRIFYINGLY expensive. Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our MOT...

Dotellhimpike · 03/01/2023 23:03

My MOT is up this month as well. I'm paying my mortgage and a month's rent, plus moving expenses and at the bare minimum the windscreen on the car has a crack in it and needs replaced.

fuckles.

IReallyLikeCrows · 03/01/2023 23:20

So, this thread is something ...Trans-age

I would really like it if someone would stop the round planet and let me off because humanity has clearly not just lost the plot, but scribbled all over it, thrown it in a bin, then forgotten which bin and then remembered that all the bins have been incinerated. What in the name of holy-fucking-fuckery is wrong with western culture?! We are truly and utterly fucked.

bignosebignose · 03/01/2023 23:30

Filed under “hiding in plain sight.” Lots of elderly (TM) “transgirls” have been blazing the trail for the last few years.

That was normal until the 80s. Every 50,000 miles.

What fresh madness, etc.

What worries me, though, is I've always laughed at the loonies who said, the world's gone mad, can't you see that only we have the true path? (Moonies, cults, etc). Now I feel like I'm one of those people.

SinnerBoy · 04/01/2023 00:45

The Moonies, there's a blast from the past!

Along with Cardinal Sin.

duc748 · 04/01/2023 00:56

Because now, you can't just be whoever you want to be, you can believe in whatever version of reality that you want, and it's just as valid, whether it's Q-Anon or Pizzagate or Joe Biden stole an election.

MissLawls · 04/01/2023 14:01

Good afternoon and happy new year to all.

MOT worries always give me the sheets. We've been so very lucky these past few years. Passed every time. It's a very old (2006) Vauxhall Corsa with only about 50,000 on the clock as I hardly ever go anywhere but feel I must have a car living in rural. I do like driving and I like the freedom, in principle, it gives me. My fear is that it must eventually get to point it's not worth keeping on the road and then we have to make awful decision about what to replace it with and how much to spend. I think the car, bought second hand (obviously!) in 2014 cost us about £2,000 but it might've been less.

In the past spending £300 odd to get our cars through their MOTs was justified thus: you have a car for another year for £300. You'd never be able to buy one for that.

So that's what we always do.

I've never had a new car. I did however get a new iphone last year when the second hand one I had died on me. Till then I've always been Second Hand Rose.

Haha!

Just got an email from DC school: it's time for them to choose their GCSE options! How can this be happening already? They're only little babies...

Time goes much too quickly. I'm convinced the last two decades haven't really happened, it's all just a fever dream and it's still 2002.

bignosebignose · 04/01/2023 16:14

Same here Kuc, elder LittleBignose has to choose her GCSEs in the next few weeks. Doesn't seem possible.

MavisMcMinty · 04/01/2023 18:18

My dogs take a newly swept floor as a personal affront. Maybe if I left it all there and didn’t bother sweeping up the mess they’d stop destroying foam-filled “luxury” dog beds and cardboard boxes?

And just spoke to new lodger for the first time since he moved in last Thursday night - he’s so happy, it’s lovely! It all looks so lovely and homely over there, fairy lights, pot plants, rugs, and all immaculately tidy - he says he’s a bit OCD so that’s double-plus good! (Of course even I can manage to be tidy for the first fortnight in a new place, I’m not a monster.)

Maybe he’d like to adopt my dogs, as he likes sweeping and cleaning so much?

Askias · 04/01/2023 18:21

Happy new year y'all. Very sorry to hear Fay Weldon has died. I loved her books, especially 'Rules of Life', a novella about how to clean your clothes. I must re-read it. Hope you are all well, I've got the pre Xmas lurgy back with a hacking bronchitic cough, but feel ok and managing work.

MavisMcMinty · 04/01/2023 18:25

…I very much hope he’ll want the pool table that’s currently dismantled and cluttering up the garage. The last lodger made us take it out, and this fella seemed very keen to have it put back before he moved in, like a dream bachelor pad, bless him, but it’s such a huge and lovely space without it, he’s reconsidering. Might sell it, if anyone here wants a full-size pool table including balls (old-fashioned spots and stripes)? It does need a new baize.

duc748 · 04/01/2023 18:58

I'd love a pool table! No room in my little house, sadly.

Britinme · 04/01/2023 19:01

Blimey - I followed the Preg thread and the Babies and children threads for so long on GUT and JTT and I feel as if I knew so many of your children as tiny babies (I remember Kuc's Cells!) that it's a bit of a shock that they're all coming up for GCSEs. I must be really old!

Kucingsparkles · 04/01/2023 19:17

@bignosebignose @Britinme Time flies!

Oh, great news, Michelle Donelan, Culture secretary, has scrapped plans to sell off C4! And I think that’s the first Tory “great news!” I’ve ever written.
