Thread 3 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

Kucingsparkles · 21/12/2022 06:14

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

As someone else said, if five to seven years ago you were open to a range of opinons and willing to accept a frank exchange of views on all topics but now you claim to be literally hurt and damaged by knowing people have a different set of opinons to you, it's not them who have been radicalised.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 26/12/2022 15:07

The first big feminist exodus was longer ago than that though. Some of them hate and fear women.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/12/2022 15:27

Gah kuc, I would be furious. I do not like unexpected visitors one bit.

On the Other Place and the recent revisionist posting, well they are welcome to that particular Brains Trust duo.

Kerebus · 26/12/2022 16:39

Snarly has to be most aggressively stupid person I've ever come across. Sol's quite bright and he can be funny but he's madly obsessive about some subjects and gets nasty with it.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/12/2022 16:44

There's a coterie of aggressively stupid Dave Sparts.

I now recall with some amusement the poster who could not understand their plan for the state to requistion and sell or use any property worth over a million pounds would have any flaws.

It was priceless entertainment.

"Rule 64 of the Highway Code doesn't apply to me if there are metal railings on a path! A cycle blogging copper said so, so I CAN ride on the fucking pavement!"

SinnerBoy · 26/12/2022 17:12

(Rule 64 says that cyclists must NEVER cycle on a pavement).

We've just had a minor drama. I did cold meat and chicken leftovers, crackers, cheeses, pickles and salami selection for dinner. My wife started retching and ran out the back door, we thought she was going to be sick.

A few seconds later, she opened it and croaked, "Help!" I dashed out, "Are you choking?" "Hack, cough, gag."

I turned her round and did the Heimlich Manoeuvre and apologised for not realising she was dying, not puking. It's the second time I've done it, the first time, it was immediately obvious.

Am I allowed a little smug point?

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 26/12/2022 18:47

you are, but be kind to her, she had a horrible fright. It may hit you later as well.

weaseleyes · 26/12/2022 19:13

Blimey, sinner! I mean, I think smugness is wholly justified, but yes - you might have some other emotions later too!

Dotellhimpike · 26/12/2022 19:23

Glad she's OK, now it's time to give yourself a pat on the back (DYSWIDT?)

Kucingsparkles · 26/12/2022 19:29

Bloody hell @SinnerBoy! You done good, and I hope she's not too shaken!

You are indeed, hope SinnerGirl is feeling better.

IReallyLikeCrows · 26/12/2022 20:07

Smugness allowed. I hope she's okay now.

Had a look at that thread. They will refer to it for ages. It was years before they stopped at least occasionally mentioning the first exodus. It's because as the place gets more entrenched in its own notion of righteousness it has to go back to the moment when their righteousness was "proved". It needs to be repeated to be true. Every so often someone would tell me I'd been brought up and I'd go and look at some nomark taking the piss out of me. Shadrack was often a shit stirrer for reasons known only to himself as he'd never been a part of the original fall out. Nemo, then as now, is adamant that there is/was no misogyny.

I do think you'll get it worse this time though. Then we were just silly women getting our knickers in a twist over nothing because most women stayed. Now, you are terfs and bigots. It is insufferable but once I left I realised that it was always going to go that way. People hang on to the "glory" days of GU and ignore that it's just a private ever decreasing little space on the internet that no one gives a shit about.

Some of us set up a tiny talk board where we check in, keep in touch and remain aware that, as Bill and Ted once said, all we are is dust in the wind, dude.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 26/12/2022 20:19

Is that the proboards place someone posted a link to a few weeks ago? I tried to register but it didn't go through.

nemo is an odd one, gets very strong convictions on people/situations based on nothing. He chased me round the board with accusations a year or so back - there was no point arguing or reasoning because it was all in his head. Frustrating. It's interesting that he's as capable of denying reality as he is of inventing things.

BezMills · 26/12/2022 20:29

Nemo is a good friend of mine, but we clearly don't see eye to eye on everything
waves vaguely

Britinme · 26/12/2022 20:31

@BezMills are you the poster formerly known as CamWest? Or Mills?

BezMills · 26/12/2022 20:35

Hiya no I'm not liggers / mills, but I know her well too. I was OneOfOne over there. Not so prolific in recent years, hence not a soul noticing my unannounce-a-flounce.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 26/12/2022 20:47

I lost my Tetratalks password when I got a new phone. Must have another go at logging in.

SinnerBoy · 27/12/2022 00:36

Thanks, fellow humans. She's fine now, having a row with our girl, who's decided to have a shower now.

At half past midnight.

I'm so grateful that they've woken me up.

It's amazing that I learned the HM on a first aid course 25 years ago and have put it to use.

artant · 27/12/2022 01:53

Sounds scary, sinner! I have feeling (my last first aid course was probably 5 years ago and that was just a half day auto-injector one so I may be mid-remembering) hitting on the back is preferred first approach these days with HM if that doesn’t work. It worked though which is what matters!

A bit late but merry Christmas, exiles!

Mostly as uneventful as ever here: just my mum, brother and me. Turkey breast joint for mum and bro, nut roast for me; excellent roasties and shop bought Christmas pudding for all. My nut roast was probably one egg away from excellent but its tendency to crumble and fall apart doesn’t stop it being delicious (hazelnuts mixed with leek, onion, lentils and butter beans plus an egg to bind it together all packed into a loaf tin lined with grated cheese). There were also sprouts. None of us like sprouts but my brother had grown them on his allotment. I have no idea why. Christmas dinner cottage pie this evening (nut roast edition for me).

Family friends visited on Christmas Eve which was lovely (cups of tea, clementine and almond syrup cake and lots of catch up chat). We’d somehow not managed to meet over Christmas 2019 so exchanged pre-pandemic presents! Mum a bit teary on Christmas Day when we opened the present chosen for her three years ago by her best friend who died this year.

MavisMcMinty · 27/12/2022 05:59

Well done Sinner! The Heimlich manoeuvre is one of the three things I’ve always wanted to in public, along with resuscitating a cardiac arrest and delivering a baby at a bus stop - it’s always a bus stop in my fantasy although we have no bus stops round here. Time’s running out though, I’ll be 60 in 2023. People are gonna have to hurry up with their choking, heart attacks and public birthing.

kittykarate · 27/12/2022 09:16

Great to see you around Oney! I used to speak to you on the running thread before my feet fell to bits.

I'm in bed feeling sorry for myself as I've got a massive barking cough and a really tight chest.

Kerebus · 27/12/2022 09:38

We're off into Cambridge for the sales. Wish me luck!

"Hello, little boy, what's your name?"

"309 Express."
