Thread 3 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

Kucingsparkles · 21/12/2022 06:14

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Re KWC quiz - the QI talk forums have a forum called Sooper Seekrit which is only populated at this time of year for the KWC quiz. It's made to be hidden from Google, but as we have solved most of the clues you can always cheat and go there to check your answers. When I say 'we', I mean most of them by the many people there cleverer than I am.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 26/12/2022 07:23

Would I have to register to find it? (no success from following the link)

Britinme · 26/12/2022 07:46

No you shouldn’t have to register just to read it, only to post. I’m surprised the link doesn’t work because I copied and pasted it, but go to qi.Com and click the Talk link at the top of the page.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 26/12/2022 07:55

Nope - checked the few things with recent activity.

Kucingsparkles · 26/12/2022 08:13

I can get to the QI talk forum from the link, but can't find the Seekrit discussion.

Although, having glanced at the quiz, I see that (as usual) I can answer at most one or two of the questions Xmas Sad

Christmas confession. Had such a lovely day yesterday, gorging on mince pies, chocolates, crisps, samosas, bhajis and the like, when it came time in the late afternoon to make a proper dinner, we couldn't be boothered, and when we got hungry later on, I made both me and Mrs Pike Spaghetti Hoops (with loads of black pepper as is the rule) on thick Tiger Bread toast , which was just perfect.

Britinme · 26/12/2022 10:58

@DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry - aha! Just realised that the Sooper Seekrit bit is invisible to Google, so you might have to register to see it.

Kucingsparkles · 26/12/2022 11:39

I feel like I might need to start one of those moany Christmas AIBU threads but they never go well.

As I mentioned, we had FiL over yesterday. A couple of weekends ago we had BiL and wife over. Tomorrow afternoon DC are having a school friend over. And 28-29 we have friends and their kids visiting. Given how naturally antisocial I am, and how much I hate having people in my house, I think I have gone above and beyond.

We didn't manage to see DH's sister before Christmas, so to be fair we did need to arrange a meet-up at some point during the festive period to exchange sacks of presents. But what I wasn't expecting was for DH to ring his sister this morning and blithely invite her and husband, grown-up kids and partners and their kids, over to ours tomorrow. Whilst in theory he will deal with all the food planning and thus it shouldn't affect me, as we all know that's not how households work. There's going to be a whole bunch of "we" - whether it's tidying or organising or whatever.

And frankly, I just need a bunch of people-free time to recharge my introvert batteries.

Gah Kuc! That sounds too much, I agree. YADNBU.

We are seeing 14 members of MrPSB's family tomorrow but happily it's in a restaurant that is in the middle of where people live, and even better for us, is in our town. That works extremely well.

MavisMcMinty · 26/12/2022 12:02

YANBU. Hell is other people, at least when it’s too many and for too long.

SqueakyDinosaur · 26/12/2022 12:05

I'm sure I'm not the only one still keeping an eye on the old place - don't know if I will post there again. But I found this sequence of posts interesting, as the Mod response suggests the topic is still taboo. I certainly don't feel like returning if that's still policy, whether or not it is actually discussed.

I would like to buy both CarlosFandango and CentristDad a drink though, for their contributions to the discussion.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 26/12/2022 12:08

I sense a strong wish not to have the topic discussed while JtS is still in control of future events.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 26/12/2022 12:09

to which end I am trying (and often failing) not to talk about that place here.

Kucingsparkles · 26/12/2022 12:10

I do feel bad about being unsociable and my internal groaning at the thought of people coming to my house. I genuinely adore all these people. I like spending time with them.

But I just get "peopled-out" really easily, especially when they're in my house. Might be because they're "in my head" a lot more when I'm preparing to host, e.g. tidying up, toddler-proofing, remembering dietary requirements, etc and I can't get away from them.

Meeting up somewhere else isn't quite as draining for me.

What CarlosFandango had to say:

The central idiocy that the posters (and others) I've mentioned were forever battling was the utterly utterly stupid and damaging conflation of 'GC' with 'transphobe'. I have vanishingly little respect for such an illogical and scientifically-illiterate position.

In stark contrast to Snarly's angry, fact free rant.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 26/12/2022 12:13

Kuc, I sympathise. Can you get a headache that means you have to go and lie down in a darkened room mid-visit?

Tempting, but my sense of hosting responsibility would prevent me!

Carlos is a top guy and has been great on this.

But, more importantly, it's handing the 'reins' over, FFS!

Dotellhimpike · 26/12/2022 12:45

If you look at all the times it gets brought up over here it's always the same pattern. Snide post, nasty comment, vile insinuation about what happened and the people who left, absolutely fine, allowed to stay. Reasonable response offering a critical perspective, immediately met with cries of "it's all water under the bridge, move on" etc but it's they who can't move on and keep returning to the topic. like some Edgar Alan Poe-esque guilt driven need to try and explain themselves or rewrite history.

I did like BNBN's posting of JtS' words demanding people be driven from the site else he'd shut it down. No argument, no need to rehash anything, just post his exact words and leave it at that.

SinnerBoy · 26/12/2022 12:56

I think that's the first time I've looked at the site, for about 2 weeks. I'm saddened by the events, but I'm not missing it very much.

Dotellhimpike · 26/12/2022 13:06

Honestly, the number of self satisfied smug cynical pricks on every thread makes it unbearable. There's nothing being discussed over there as far as the news or current events goes that isn't being discussed over here with a wider range of views and more welcoming group of people.

BezMills · 26/12/2022 13:06

@Kucingsparkles yanbu to want quiet time and to feel stress about the semming inescapability of visitors.

@all yes I too have read the latest on cavani.

What can I say? The revisionism is quite astonishing but also, meh?

I've checked out and am super sad about that. I posted the other day, to help a fond acquaintance out. Other than that, I'm out. Snarly and Sol strutting about as if they've just saved the free world makes me vom in my mouth but yanno, not no longer my circus not no longer my monkeys.
My best wishes as ever for my friends who continue to post.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 26/12/2022 13:20

I'm still lurking on a couple of the support threads, and LN, but less and less as time goes on. My Xmas post may end up being my last one.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 26/12/2022 14:29

The thing that struck me wasn't so much the recent iteration of

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 26/12/2022 14:33

sorry

iteration of misogynist lies, it was the discussion of their vision for the sites future a few days ago that made it clear that at least some of them want it to be a closed and enclosed gentlemen's club with no new members.

Makes this place even more of a breath of fresh air - I had hoped, maybe naively, that new management would actively seek new people - do they really think a dead-end is better than the 'open to the world' days of GUT?.
