Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Surely if there's a birth at a bus stop then it'll be twins, cos you spend ages waiting then 2 turn up at once.....

I'll get my coat.

SinnerBoy · 27/12/2022 10:11

Ha ha ha!

BezMills · 27/12/2022 10:22

Oh hai @kittykarate! I miss the spitfire thread. I've joined a couple in Health->Exercise, hopefully will find cameraderie with some fitsters

Just had a package delivered by Amazon, delivery bloke looked well shifty when he handed it to me, got my suspcions upo right away. and sure enough, the package had been ripped open, and the item inside also had clearly been opened and taken out of its package then returned. It was a heavy item, could easily have been electronics from the size and weight of the package, and my reckon is that was what he was looking for but it turns out it was only a massive bottle of bubble bath, so he put it back. The annoying thing is, there's no way to contact Amazon and tell them their delivery bloke was tampering with the parcels, who knows how many people he's nicking from?

bignosebignose · 27/12/2022 10:44

You can contact them via web chat or phone, pike. We had some parcels go missing before Christmas and by the look of our village Facebook page that week, it seems likely that a driver made off with a van load of deliveries because loads never turned up.

Nice relaxed day chez BNBN yesterday, we watched Topgun Maverick again, School of Rock YET again, and the Dead Zone for my nth time but littler BN’s first. He was really impressed with IAWL on Christmas Eve, even having seen it last year. He’s watched a lot of sci-fi in 2022 and I think it made him appreciate the story more - and the fact that it was made so long ago.

Dotellhimpike · 27/12/2022 11:11

IAWL is a great introduction to the principles of socialism for kids, just as the Bill and Ted movies are great for teaching Humanism.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 27/12/2022 11:52

I posted this in the wrong place so copied it over. I've loved IAWL since I first saw it (on the TV ca 1972, my first but far from last Jimmy Stewart experience) but can't watch it at the moment because doing so stirs all sorts of memories not just about the movie and that makes me feel very low. BUT I can watch The Bishop's Wife which is similarly feelgood and heartwarming with bonus 'really ugly hat fascinating a beautiful woman' microplot.

I love the tree decorating sequence and always feel great envy. Ditto the skating sequence. And Cary Grant is always fun to watch.

SinnerBoy · 27/12/2022 11:55

Pike

You can and Amazon Services are very happy to rip a new one:

IReallyLikeCrows · 27/12/2022 12:34

The Bishop's Wife is a great little film.

I adored James Stewart from childhood. Unbeknownst to me, at the time, I also adored Frank Capra because some of the James Stewart films I loved were by Capra. I'm a sucker for old movies.

IReallyLikeCrows · 27/12/2022 12:41

The lurgy continues. Woke up to the sore throat raging again yesterday and felt beaten by it. And so much coughing and bloody wheezing. Slightly less sore again today.

Whatever this lurgy is it's an utter bastard and I wouldn't wish it on anyone I care for or indeed anyone decent. I'd happily wish it on most of parliament and various other arsehole scumbags.

bignosebignose · 27/12/2022 13:07

Can’t remember if it’s been mentioned on here but BBC iPlayer has A Matter Of Life And Death on for the next 13 days. Made in the same year as IAWL, as it happens, and another absolute classic. Have you been testing for Covid, @IReallyLikeCrows?

Britinme · 27/12/2022 13:15

I spent yesterday baking extensively, in preparation for being descended on by my son and daughter-in-law and my three American grandchildren (10, 7 and 4) later today. They drove up from NJ yesterday and are currently in a hotel they like because it has a pool and a good breakfast.

Christmas lunch planned for this afternoon and they'll be here this evening too. I made mince pies, millionaire's shortbread, a mango and lemon trifle, a quiche and a pumpkin pudding (pumpkin pie filling without the pastry).

IReallyLikeCrows · 27/12/2022 13:27

@bignosebignose I haven't because I have no tests. I've ordered some mostly so I can test negative which will allow me to see someone and if necessary get antibiotics. I discovered that you just have to say that a medical professional asked you to order tests to get them for free. They don't check. There is no way I'm paying for tests. It's an utter disgrace that they expect that of us.

bignosebignose · 27/12/2022 13:58

Do you have a pulse oximeter? If you’re wheezing and it is Covid it would be wise to keep an eye on your blood oxygen levels.

Tricyrtis2022 · 27/12/2022 16:03

Afternoon everyone, hope you've all had a decent time. Sinner, what a bloody good job you'd been taught the Heimlich manoeuvre and realised in time you'r wife's predicament!

We are now back from a very pleasant but exhausting visit to family just north of Warwick. A small gathering at Mr T's cousin's place. The cousin is an ex-butcher turned chef, so the food was excellent - joints of pork and beef, plus a duck, with all the usual suspects on the side. He started preparing the gravy in November and it was like a whole new food group in itself. Breakfast was Eggs Royale and had about half a pound of butter in the hollandaise sauce, but my goodness it was delicious.

Like others, I find company very hard work so it's a massive relief to be at home again and sitting quietly. I cannot underestimate how lovely it will feel to get into bed tonight and then wake up here tomorrow. In fact the first thought that went through my mind this morning was 'We can go home today'.

Tricyrtis2022

Sinner, what a bloody good job you'd been taught the Heimlich manoeuvre and realised in time you'r wife's predicament!

Well, belatedly - after she opened the door and croaked "Help." But I'm very glad I learned it.

Tricyrtis2022 · 27/12/2022 16:36

I bet your entire family and everyone who knows you all is glad you learned it!

SinnerBoy · 27/12/2022 16:37

I hadn't really thought of that.

IReallyLikeCrows · 27/12/2022 19:01

@bignosebignose I don't. I'm sure my oxygen levels are a bit off but being asthmatic I also know when they're really badly off and this isn't it.

bignosebignose · 27/12/2022 19:19

I don’t mean to be a nuisance / scaremonger but just want to say one more thing and you probably already know this in which case no harm done - apparently you don’t always know with Covid, at least that’s my recollection from the first wave in 2020. People were turning up in hospital not really out of breath but with very dangerously low oxygen levels. Somehow their bodies were compensating but that could only ever be a short term thing. Your local GP might even give/ lend you a pulse oximeter or Amazon should deliver one within a day or two. Get well soon.

MavisMcMinty · 27/12/2022 19:26

Yes, “silent hypoxia” they called it. Maybe you would be more aware than most, Crows but an oximeter would be useful, just in case.

bignosebignose · 27/12/2022 19:29

Also saw it ironically called Happy Hypoxia as people seemed pretty much fine on the surface.

CyanCrystalViolet · 27/12/2022 23:31

Hypoxia can make people feel euphoric. Reminds me of this audio of pilots experiencing hypoxia mid-air:

CyanCrystalViolet · 27/12/2022 23:33

(They landed safely)

IReallyLikeCrows · 28/12/2022 00:40

Crikey, that was terrifying but they all stayed calm.

I've ordered an oximeter, thankfully they had one for less than a tenner 58% off!) With 4.4 rating. Hoping to register with a GP tomorrow and my COVID tests should show up soon. Hopefully things will get sorted soon.

Btw, there were shenanigans last night. I hear cat howling head to the kitchen where Francis is basically a toilet brush and there's more noise on the terrace/balcony. In the dark my fevered mind thought at first that it was my ginger stepson who'd somehow found us. Obviously it wasn't him but a pretty young cat who had somehow got up to my first floor terrace. I explained that this wasn't its home and despite worrying that it might be stuck there went back to bed. It clearly found its way down. Maybe I have to accept Francis is just madly attractive to other cats. Or something.
