Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

I took turmeric and glucosamine for over a year, for my back. It seemed to have no effect, but a lot of people swear by them. Turmeric has been used as an anti inflammatory for thousands of years, so there's probably something in it.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/12/2022 14:49

Glucosamine comes in 2 forms - sulphate and hydroxide. The evidence of effectiveness is for the former.

SinnerBoy · 24/12/2022 14:51

It was the sulphate I had, I've still got half a tub, somewhere.

Britinme · 24/12/2022 14:51

@BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn - the one I take is a combination of the two forms, 1250mg.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/12/2022 15:43

On reflection, form 2 might be hydrochloride. Anyway, sulphate is the proven one.

mach2 · 24/12/2022 16:21

I used glucosamine sulphate to great effect on a bad knee. I can't prove it wasn't coincidence or placebo but I was fully aware it might not work for me and had pencilled in three months to see if it had any effect.

The knee had been getting steadily worse and I had a limp. The pain and stiffness started to reduce after six weeks and was mostly gone by 3-4 months.

angelico53 · 24/12/2022 16:33

This is great and very helpful! Thanks everone.

angelica has tried acupuncture several times with no effect. She has tried gluco but only in tablet form but I like the sound on the combined meds approach. Even it it's a little placebo-based relief and no more, I'd be happy, but you never know.

We were discussing some alt-med stuff for a friend with a horrrendous cancer this morning. I try to keep an open mind about stuff, but I've got a bad feeling about this particular treatment, not because of the lack of evidence, but because it's expensive enough for her (the friend's) dad to start to sell his house and the family to gather as much cash as possible. These poor people are in a dreadful, vulnerable place - they would grasp at anything.

Kucingsparkles · 24/12/2022 17:07

No medical advice @angelico53, but sympathies to angelica. And fabulous tree!

Thanks, kuc!

We have a tradition of buying one decoration every year and just bunging them all on. There's one - a blasted "Harrods" bauble - that her sister gave us, that I'm planning to accidentally step on in January!

SqueakyDinosaur · 24/12/2022 17:30

I have given my nephews a weird bauble each every Christmas since they were little. Their family Christmas tree is a riot of madness!

PLEASE stop making me jealous with your beautiful, calm, organised, lovely homes.

Thing with photos of lovely and organised houses is: it's usually a lie Wink I never take pictures of the ceiling stains, for example! And the rest of it is clever framing to exclude DH's Piles or DCs' acres of Lego, plus the bonus that dust and dirt don't show up on photos.

Back from cinema, film was great, but I got a big dose of Bad Cinema Behaviour! Couple come and sit next to me (tbf, you're supposed to sit in your allocated seat), not kids, in their 50s/60s.

Woman's mobe on throughout, check. And just 'on', waving it about so the screen kept catching my eye. And she had some massive poncho thing, which had to pulled around and re-organised. Plus whispering throughout the film. Then 3/4 the way through, she disappeared, too the loo, presumably. Fair enough, can't moan at that. But when she got back to her seat, further rummaging in her bag, and applied some very smelly perfume, FFS! 😡

duc748 · 24/12/2022 18:45

Never used to get that at the Watershed! 😀

bignosebignose · 24/12/2022 18:55

Merry Christmas all. I think we’re going to be watching IAWL tonight too courtesy of the nudges here. I didn’t expect the kids to readily agree, with them having seen it last Christmas for the first time, but they must have enjoyed it more than they seemed to then.

And vive la mumsnet.

Dotellhimpike · 24/12/2022 18:57

IAWL was on in a patient's room about two hours ago, I decided they need a good long bath, and I watched it while they soaked.

mach2 · 24/12/2022 19:02

I took my friends lad out to eat for his 16th birthday yesterday. It was an American diner and we both left there quite heavy on our legs.

My sister is coming over tomorrow so I've got a joint rather than turkey. I'm not that mad on turkey. I'm currently trying to clean up my put of a house.

IReallyLikeCrows · 24/12/2022 19:06

@StephanieSuperpowers if it helps I've been in my new place for a week and the only rooms even partially done are the kitchen and bathroom. I live among boxes. Many, many, many boxes. About 15 of them are just books.

It's a Wonderful Life was a delight. Everyone clapped at the end and there wasn't a completely dry eye in the house. I did better than usual and only started blubbing near the end. I've been known to start when he gets his ear bashed by the drunk pharmacist. Also, first time this year I didn't fall asleep during a film in a cinema which just proves it's the films, not me. Slept through most of Stephen Spielberg's West Side Story and at least half of Belfast. Now that I have a cinema literally five minutes away from me (and another about fifteen minutes away) I am going to be at the cinema loads more next year.

I only found out that It's a Wonderful Life was showing today because I was looking to see if either place would be showing a film called Corsage I read about yesterday. Huzzah for happy accidents.

Anyway! I have two bottles of Benylin ( one from Boots and one from Superdrug) and despite it being a very stupid thing to do given I'm not exactly rolling in even pennies, I renewed a tradition that I haven't done for years and bought myself a book for Christmas. I've been holding on for the paperback or a good offer on Kindle but lost all sense and bought Babel. I read a sample on Kindle and was hooked.

I'll be here tomorrow but to all who won't I hope there is joy and contentment in your Christmas and I'll look forward to seeing you soon.

CyanCrystalViolet · 24/12/2022 19:27

Merry XXmas everyone. I’m roasting chestnuts, a childhood favourite

I'm watching Carols from Kings and all is right with the world. Happy Christmas all of you.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/12/2022 20:14

We've just eaten Swedish not-meatballs with red cabbage and something approximating Jansson's temptation, while watching A Ghost Story for Christmas. The festive season is officially underway.

A very merry Christmas to you all.

Britinme · 24/12/2022 20:34

We are about to open the festive chocolates. Tiny little Greek cheese pies (straight from the freezer into the oven) for supper tonight, because I can't be arsed to cook. Out for Christmas lunch at a restaurant tomorrow, but Monday will be spent baking as my son and his wife and the three American grandchildren (will only see my two British ones on Facetime tomorrow) will be here on Tuesday.

Kucingsparkles · 24/12/2022 21:12

Right then. Carols from Kings is done, the stockings are hung, the sherry and mince pie and carrot is on the hearth (DDs insist we have to do this even though they don’t believe anymore).

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas 🎄 from us with a final one of my misleadingly tidy photos (just to the right is DH’s slipper-clad foot holding back a tidal wave of Lego).

See you all on the other side!

Merry Christmas! 🌲

duc748 · 24/12/2022 21:19

Happy Christmas you lovely people!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/12/2022 22:21

Nice windows. We have similar stained glass panels at the top of ours, but on square bays.
