Please, please make them go away.

This seems like a plausible take by Sam Freedman -

"Reading all the different quotes following the NHS/strikes meeting it sounds like Barclay said something along the lines of: "if I'm going to get more money for you this year you have to show me/Treasury how it's going to improve outcomes."

"To which surely the answer is just a chart of current nurse retention figures?"

twitter.com/samfr/status/1612457132565188608?s=46&t=vPzVs0lsvTBPWqrNyX8nLg

I'll admit I naively hoped for a step towards resolution today. Seems more likely the meeting was nothing more than to give the Government something to hide behind. It is so infuriating to watch.

I'm interested to know what how the RCN has responded.

DuncinToffee · 09/01/2023 15:37

From The Mirror

RCN chiefs say talks with Steve Barclay "bitterly disappointing" and there's a "distance to travel" to avert its planned walkouts

Oh, so it's all very promising then!

Fucks sakes.

We have huge shortages in healthcare. Let's simultaneously rely upon their goodwill, pay them as little as we can and then complain about productivity.

Fladdermus · 09/01/2023 16:03

How do you even measure productivity in a health service? Do they want paramedics to ignore the person being cut of their crashed car because that will take hours whereas they could deal with 100 splinters in that time? Or are they wanting the brain surgeon to go a bit faster, squeeze in an extra quick one before they clock off? What the actual fuck are they talking about?

Imagine what this has done to morale. This has literally spelled out to every employee of the NHS how little respect their Government has for them. If they were even vaguely thinking about leaving the NHS they almost certainly will now.

Blossomtoes · 09/01/2023 16:12

Does Sunak really want the collapse of the NHS on his watch? Because he’s going the right way about it. Is this incompetence, ideology, stupidity or something else? It’s beyond belief. Wtf did the “health leaders” tell them yesterday?

Yes

DowningStreetParty · 09/01/2023 18:36

Truss will always be remembered for crashing the economy in which is causing hunger and homelessness but if Sunak crashes the NHS people will needlessly die. It’s horrific.

Notonthestairs · 09/01/2023 19:25

Apparently the new strike legislation will be introduced tomorrow.

No wonder they weren't prepared to talk about pay & conditions.

They want a few more headlines under their belt - Government foiled by evil House of Lords, Labour won't support further legislation blah blah.

Yet again governing with the good of the nation in mind (and not on reelection) 🙄

Rishi Sunak: Crisis in the NHS

Even the Torys believe there is no plan for the NHS, a bit bloody late, wtf did they think Sunak was going to do.

L1ttledrummergirl · 09/01/2023 21:01

Third time trying so I apologise if it's already worked.

The tories are realising that the wonderful leader they spent months picking hasn't got a fucking clue. Who'd have thought?

I can't stand it when the current PM talks about having a "proper grown up conversation" it is cringeworthy
surely you mean "pwoper gwown up conversation" ?
I despise the lispy rat faced manlet😤

Notonthestairs · 10/01/2023 08:19

There is plenty to criticise without mocking speech impediments.

The current stalemate seems to be that Barclay needs to show that he has won something before he can persuade the Treasury to provide more money. But what does increased productivity look like for a demoralised understaffed workforce functioning in crisis mode? There are so many areas which have been left under resourced - social care, maintenance and infrastructure, short staffing etc - which have a direct impact on NHS productivity. In addition it overlooks the ongoing impact of infection restrictions and the health of people currently now using the NHS having been persuaded to stay away during Covid.

Even the supposedly good news isn't all that - the £250 million purchase of extra beds (from where???) announced yesterday is coming from exisiting budgets so somebody somewhere is getting their existing budgets slashed.

We dont have enough staff. We are losing staff. We need those jobs filled. The answer is to make it more attractive to stay and recruit.

Piggywaspushed · 10/01/2023 08:35

I feel that they may be nudging towards getting rid of the diversity and inclusion roles - but that isn't an instant saving, doesn't save all that much and anyone who does the role is ale to talk very articulately about the importance of such roles within large workforces. But it'd be a nice soundbite and suit this government's culture wars agenda.

Notonthestairs · 10/01/2023 08:44

"But it'd be a nice soundbite and suit this government's culture wars agenda."

Yes that would be considered a big win.

Political posturing getting in the way of making actual progress in ending the strikes. This is the problem of having a PM permanently under threat from one wing of his party. The need to satisfy the ERG/CSG etc and neutralise the threat from ex PMs. They are held together with sellotape.

It wasn't just lobbying breaches - he had questioned the integrity of Kathryn Stone (parliamentary commissioner for standards) and her report on his lobbying. He suggested he was being penalised for criticising Johnson rather than the various ways he ignored the code of conduct.
Classy as ever.

So longer waits for treatment- be that getting an ambulance or treatment in A&E or waiting lists - lead to higher numbers of people dying.

Crisis? What crisis?

Extra beds from where? indeed! There may be empty beds in private nursing homes but that’s because they can’t staff them!! No use paying for beds which are not staffed!

And the shadow minister for health made an excellent point, these patients need to be at home with domiciliary care. That’s their best chance of regaining independence. They don’t want to be put in a home. They will feel they are being dumped there.

L1ttledrummergirl · 10/01/2023 15:42

Are they real beds or virtual ones?
