Grin blossomtoes
Wonder what the £5 goes towards (venue hire or reelection campaign?)

Bit depressed after reading the multitude of NHS threads. I'm not opposed to discussions about the future of the NHS at all - I think there may well be some really interesting options out there.

But it does require a national conversation and understanding that the Government may still need to spend more than they'd like if there is any hope of them replicating any of the European models AND an acknowledgement of what has gone wrong over the last 12 years.

No workforce planning. Maintenance ignored. Social care underfunded. Staff retention & recruitment. Little to no investment in preventative care.

You can't fix things without understanding what has gone wrong.

Actually we can't fix things with a Government that pretends this is all normal - or that will chuck £140 million on expensive projects like Rwanda just to shut up Farage & gain headlines.

Sunaks emergency fucking meeting today is at least 3 months late, probably more. This is what the fuckwits should have been sorting out through the summer when the knobhead caretaker PM fucked off on holidays and Truss was fucking over the economy.

As usual, they don't give a shit until it's too late, meanwhile people are dying. Yet, it still feels it's only a photo op so they can say they are doing shit, I don't trust that they'll do a thing. Too little too late.

Notonthestairs · 08/01/2023 07:09

Agree the meeting is 3 months too late and essentially a photo op. Sunak must have known for months that additional beds should be purchased! No mention of how they will staff those extra beds!

They didn't invite staff representatives so no trade unions at the meeting despite nurses next 2 day strike in 10 days time and the suggestion that nurses have reduced their pay expectations.
The BMA Junior doctors ballot begins Monday.

But then they think they can make political hay out of the strikes so why bother to engage.

Piggywaspushed · 08/01/2023 08:53

Sunak will be on LK this morning.

Roussette · 08/01/2023 11:11

I watched him. He was flailing around I felt, and for once LK really persisted with her NHS questions, trying to pin him down.

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/01/2023 11:12

I've just started watching the interview, if I get through it all it will be a miracle. He sounds like a whiny schoolboy, it's not his fault, he's created virtual wards (wtf), and it's worse in Scotland and Wales. He didn't like hearing about the people who had died. He couldn't possibly work in the NHS, he's far to important being PM.

As PM he has appointed people to run these departments, to have chaired the meeting yesterday for example. Is he allowing ministers to do their jobs or is he the worst kind of middle manager, micromanaging everything and slowing the decision making process?

The more he speaks the worse he sounds.

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/01/2023 11:24

My opinion of him definitely dropped again during that interview. I didn't think that would be possible.

Roussette · 08/01/2023 11:34

Jon Sopel who I rate, said this...

"The weirdness of this interview is that Sunak is doing it as though we’re only going to hear one clip from it - on his five priorities. So he kept on giving the same answer again and again. But if you listen to the interview you just hear him madly repeating himself"

DuncinToffee · 08/01/2023 11:37

I am suffering with a sinus infection, I think I prefer this pain over watching Sunak pretending everything is just fine

Just read posts by Shaun Lintern, Liam Thorp etc and you know nothing is fine Angry

I thought it was a good interview! Well it was good for LK!
She asked the questions I want to ask -
How have you let this happen? Things were going badly before the pandemic? You were warned. 4 changes to health secretary in 6 months, would you work as a care worker for £18k a year, will you talk to the nurses about pay for this year etc.

His answers (deflections) simply didn't measure up.

He's shifted the real work (relationships with the unions) to Barclay but he's mistaken if he think that keeps his hands clean.

I'm not particularly interested in whether he has a private GP - I'm sure he has. I

DuncinToffee · 08/01/2023 12:44

I think everyone knows he has private healthcare. It's his refusal to confirm it that is the point.

Yes you are right - it highlights his lack of honesty (shades of his responses to questions about his green card) and that is what will make headlines.

He just didn't have any straight answers to the biggest issues.

There was nothing to provide comfort that the crisis in the NHS will change.

Cornettoninja · 08/01/2023 13:01

or is he the worst kind of middle manager, micromanaging everything and slowing the decision making process?

I’m convinced it’s this…. And like 90% of micromanagers he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He’s not confident enough to acknowledge a lack of knowledge and is therefore incapable of delegating and when he does it’s to the best arselickers and marketers.

I’m saving the LK interview until dad is in bed. She shouldn’t hear my commentary 😁

Blossomtoes · 08/01/2023 13:16

DuncinToffee · 08/01/2023 12:44

He could actually put a half decent spin on admitting it. “Of course I have private healthcare. I wouldn’t want to add to the burden on the NHS.”

Piggywaspushed · 08/01/2023 13:21

He couldn't possibly work in the NHS, he's far to important being PM.

I got this spin too.

And he said the same when he was asked if he would work as a carer for 18k.

the80sweregreat · 08/01/2023 15:03

Glad I found you all again
Not been on here for a while.
I've been ignoring Rishi sunak as he winds me up too much :(

countrygirl99 · 08/01/2023 15:23

A few days ago I was saying to DH that he always ages me think of a rather earnest 6th former in a debating society. A few minutes later a commentator on the radio said he always sounds like a Head Boy giving a speech.

Piggywaspushed · 08/01/2023 15:27

Oh, I have ever said that. A minor payer in a school ESU team.

I tutted today when he said, instead of paying workers in social care more he would allow them to access training and qualifications.

Ermmm, yes, it's true, people do want this. And then you will pay them more for being better qualified, yes, Rishi?

Yes this! Partly why I can never take him seriously, it feels wrong to have the head prefect lecturing me when I’m 54 years old 😂

Saucery · 08/01/2023 17:22

If you close your eyes he sounds exactly like Will from Inbetweeners.

Without the charisma

Elodie09 · 08/01/2023 17:53

I can't stand it when the current PM talks about having a "proper grown up conversation" it is cringeworthy. Why don't the Tories pack up their Louis Vuitton luggage, fly off somewhere far away and let the actual "grown ups " like Sir Keir and Rachel Reeves, Wes Streeting, Yvette Cooper and possibly Andy Burnham and David Miliband (please come back), have a go at it?

It really couldn't be worse than where we currently are.

.

DuncinToffee · 09/01/2023 13:53

Barclay clearly didn't get the memo on 'grown up conversation'

BREAKING: Onay Kasab, lead national officer for Unite, says the government "have missed another opportunity" to avoid further strike action and calls talks with the health secretary today an "insult".

A caller on LBC put it very well. She said that he did answer the question, he just chose to answer it in a manipulative and dishonest way.

Blimey he's furious isn't he. And rightly so.
