The bit at the end of Titanic when Rose is back on the ship

You know the very very end bit where she dies an old lady in bed and as she drifts off she's back on the Titanic. When she walks into the ship again Trudy is still dressed as her maid and little Cora is still dressed in little more than rags. I feel bad that they all those people have to spend eternity on the Titanic as staff and third class passengers while Rose swans around in her evening gown snogging Leonardo dicaprio Confused

Evening gowns are hideously uncomfortable

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 03/12/2022 22:43

😂😂 I never noticed that before.

cinnabongene · 03/12/2022 22:44

I’m prepared to be torn to shreds but does she actually die? I always thought she i
was sleeping and dreaming about the Titanic - hence Celine warbling about “every night in my dreams…”

MissMarpleRocks · 03/12/2022 22:50

And she goes back to Leonardo do C bloke. Who she knew for about 5 minutes. What about her husband???

Slimjimtobe · 03/12/2022 22:52

He wasn’t her husnand and she didn’t love him just was engaged to him as he had money / good name

CherrySocks · 03/12/2022 22:53

Yes OP I agree - a lot of films and literature, all supposedly so humane and sensitive and uplifting, tend to gloss over the realities of social class.

We're all supposed to identify with the upper class and not worry about the people who in the majority of cases will have been our ancestors.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 03/12/2022 22:55

Watching it this time round it made me think that Jack was always meant to die on the Titanic. He was a young male passenger in steerage class.

She marries after Titanic - she must do as she has a granddaughter.

Evening gowns are harder to swim in. Pity those posh people.

KeiraMetz · 03/12/2022 22:58

I always interpreted it as it was just her version of heaven. So the others were all just a figment of her imagination so to speak? I don't think the others would want to spend eternity stuck on that ship without their own loved ones would they ! Meanwhile Rose's husband twiddles his thumbs while he patiently checks his watch and wonders what's taking her so long to die

sashagabadon · 03/12/2022 22:58

Seems very idiotic to chuck the diamond in the sea. Why? She could sell it and give money away instead

MammaWeasel · 03/12/2022 22:59

I thought that Rose's granddaughter's mother was Jack's daughter? From their tryst in the car with the steamed up windows?

It's got to be a dream. Why would the people who died on the Titanic be standing round applauding a kiss?

'Yay! We've waited 84 years for this, we can all rest in peace now the gang's back together'.

Sleeptightnightlight · 03/12/2022 23:03

I don't think it's trying to say that a sunk boat is literally the afterlife. Just that her dying thoughts/dreams were of being happy back on the Titanic.

And I've always thought it is easier to have a grand love for someone who died before you see their flaws, rather than someone you actually spend a life with.

AnyFucker · 03/12/2022 23:03

No matter how many times I watch that film it still makes me blub 😊

No, she went on to marry someone else. I think she mentions him to her Granddaughter in one scene.

MammaWeasel · 03/12/2022 23:07

Thank you @justleaveitblankthen 😊

The director has said it's meant to be ambiguous.

AfricanAmericanFriday · 03/12/2022 23:12

Forget the dream scene at the end. I’m still pissed off about the piece of floating wooden board thingy in the water and how Rose totally hogged it, leaving Jack in the freezing Atlantic.

mumda · 03/12/2022 23:16

I'm definitely never going to watch it now. It sounds terrible.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 03/12/2022 23:16

It's one of my favourite films to shout along at on the TV. DH and I have a whole routine when we watch it.

It’s the old couple that gets me. And the mam with her children. More so than Jack and Rose.
