The bit at the end of Titanic when Rose is back on the ship

You know the very very end bit where she dies an old lady in bed and as she drifts off she's back on the Titanic. When she walks into the ship again Trudy is still dressed as her maid and little Cora is still dressed in little more than rags. I feel bad that they all those people have to spend eternity on the Titanic as staff and third class passengers while Rose swans around in her evening gown snogging Leonardo dicaprio Confused

It always wound me up that she threw that diamond into the sea, so many other things she could have done with it and people/charities that could have benefited from it.

I always feel very sad when people put precious belongings of the deceased in their coffins - not printed copies/photos, but the actual original/only ones of specific items.

Symbolically, for a moment in time, it seems so very poignant - and of course, it's entirely their choice - but afterwards, that's a very precious memory you could have tangibly held on to for the rest of the lives of those who knew and loved them, gone forever; and I do wonder how many people come to regret it.

If she hadn't insisted on dragging herself out of the lifeboat and onto the ship during the sinking, there would have been room for Jack on that wooden door and he might have lived. I mean, did it ever occur to her that hurling herself back onto the ship was just going to make it harder for poor old Jack to save himself, since he was now going to look after her as well?

The film is great....as an action film. I mean, the actual sinking bit is well done and very atmospheric. The romance element is awful and the dialog just embarrassingly bad.

I thought she accidentally dropped the necklace into the ocean at the end… she kind of gasps as she does it doesn’t she?

It's definitely deliberate.

Bugger me I have never noticed him 😮

Yes he was there! I noticed him the other night.

Which is why I personally think now it's not just a scene of all the people who died - I may have changed this opinion since I last posted! It's a scene which shows how the Titanic and society should have operated - classes mixed together irrespective of wealth and status. Why should more poor people have died than rich people?

(Might be over analysing)

That might have been funny. "Oh fuck!" as she drops it - cut to credits.

Not sure Titanic would have been quite so poignant if they'd shown it with a bloopers reel at the end Grin

I think it was more, she knew he would probably die and would rather have died with him than ended up in NY alive with her awful family. Even if he had got on the door he still might’ve succumbed to hypothermia… rose was just lucky!

I too was hacked off when she lobbed it into the sea. Stupid woman.

But think of the archaeologists of the future and how excited they will be when they find it.

So much more interesting than shards of pot.

True, but they will know nothing about the person who owned it or what it meant to them. Jewellery is just random bits of metal and stones, outside of the context in which it's worn - and other things like original photos, handwritten letters and cards, childhood teddies, favourite clothes etc. will have long disintegrated and disappeared by the time the archaeologists see them.

I have no idea why I think this but I thought she married Ioan Grufford (his character anyways). I could be completely misremembering that though or it was some bullshit I read like ‘50 great movie Easter eggs that will shock you!!’

No, he played my friend's great great grandad, who actually saved Kate Winslet you know!!!

I’m prepared to be torn to shreds but does she actually die? I always thought she i
was sleeping and dreaming about the Titanic - hence Celine warbling about “every night in my dreams…”

Of course she does! Exactly the way Jack said she would: an old lady, warm in her bed, surrounded by grandchildren.

3luckystars · 23/06/2023 18:27

I don’t think that’s Cal, but I will watch it again tonight just to be sure.

Roselilly36 · 23/06/2023 18:58

Makes me sob, just so sad, the mum putting the children to bed, gets me everytime.

MeinKraft · 23/06/2023 20:05

Surprised Titanic isn't on the telly tonight actually. It's on all the time on channel 4.

Heatherjayne1972 · 23/06/2023 20:23

It’s Rose’s mother I feel sorry for
they get on the boat poor because they ‘have debt hidden by a good name’ and so Rose must marry cal ‘to ensure our survival’
but mother believes for the rest of her life (presumably) that her daughter died on the boat. What happened to her? Did she die in poverty?

why didn’t Rose sell the diamond necklace and at least keep her mother financially safe ? What a Nasty nasty thing to do -keep the necklace just to throw it into the ocean at the end.

I think it would be insensitive at this moment.

nancy2022 · 24/06/2023 09:30

It's funny as they were 22 and 23 when they filmed titanic. They just look an odd mix. Leo looks about 17 and Kate mid 30s. I haven't real noticed it before.

Homer28 · 25/06/2023 22:07

@Heatherjayne1972 im not sure they could have sold it, Cals dad filed an insurance claim on the necklace.

And yet Netflix are proudly advertising that it's back on there from 1st of July!
