Just that, pulled back from the edge hopefully for now

Were the Covid fines criminal offences, I thought that Boris and Rishi paid them within the two weeks or however long it was, they only become criminal offences if you don't pay them and go to court and have to pay.

derxa · 24/10/2022 07:30

Sunak was also found guilty of a criminal offence and fined under partygate scandal 🙄

I could well be wrong but I always thought there was some truth in his story that he was passing through number 10 on his way to a meeting and briefly stuck his head in. I do have some sympathy if that’s the case, depending how brief it was.

regardless it was a party arranged for/by Boris of which he was the main guest. Which is far worse. Plus I don’t think sunak misled parliament about it.

@walkingonsunshinekat

multiple studies put the cost of Brexit to the British economy at £200 billion + (so far of course). Perhaps the whole government which put Brexit into law should also be in jail.

It would be an easy win to apply to rejoin the SM.

Tories need to grow up and realise that Brexit can never work - the reasons Thatcher was such a strong supporter of the SM are as true today as they were back in the late 80s.

Would increase exports, boost foreign investment, help London retain its financial status, increase tax revenues & get skilled labour back into the UK.

I think we should now all agree we haven't got the higher wages promised but we have got huge labour shortages in many sectors but without the UK based workers to fill them.

SirChenjins · 24/10/2022 08:56

Agree @walkingonsunshinekat Is rejoining on Sunak's agenda though? I've lost track.

MarshaBradyo · 24/10/2022 08:58

I’d go for the SM but oddly Starmer has been definitive on that already maybe Sunak hasn’t

Yes stupid isn't it?

It's my beef with Labour/Starmer, though i agree with many of their ideas, they are too cautious but i suspect that Labour would soon ditch that particular promise.

Sunak is a full on Brexitier, will never rejoin.

IstillloveU · 24/10/2022 09:08

Sunak is a full on Brexitier, will never rejoin.

That's not promising and a little disappointing. He's an unusual suspect for a Brexiter. I'm pretty sure London voted primarily to remain, and he would be of the cohort I would have typified as being a Remainer (bankers). Hmmm. I really wish they would consider putting it on the agenda (mind you, they've probably insulted half of the EU at this point).

Redrry · 24/10/2022 09:39

Yes I'm surprised at that. Shame but I still think he's by far the best option we have right now

I also think that he's the best option. Is Hunt remaining as Chancellor then? I don't know his background at all but saw one parliament debate and an interview since his appointment and he was extremely capable of answering all questions (something Liz was not capable of and Boris was an expert in waffle only). He came across as sharp. Hopefully things can only get better now.

L1ttledrummergirl · 24/10/2022 10:20

I don't have a clue what either of them stand for. They have both recently voted against their 2019 manifesto (ban fracking) in refusing to ban fracking.

They have lied to the public over this issue by standing on that manifesto so I don't trust them.

They cannot possibly have a mandate from the electorate as we don't know what they stand for other than their own skin and yet another pension for the taxpayers to shell out.

Ffs, Sunak doesn't even know how to fill up a car, a car that he was implying was his when it belonged to someone else. He's yet another liar.

greenhousegal · 24/10/2022 10:22

Maybe things will calm down for a bit now, if Sunak gets the job.

However the toxicity of the Conservatives will not be cleansed until they are out of power for a good spell I think. Should happen sooner rather than later, or they will run amok slowly but surely again to the detriment of the country (not party) as usual.

I'd give them six months. Not for their benefit, but for our benefit and in terms of calming the markets and some semblance of stability. At that point, I think we should look for a general election, but for now, and only for now, I think we're going to have to bear with them for the sake of stability.

Yes, the thought of Rees Mogg being bum-rushed to the back benches is a glorious thing. He really is thoroughly repellent. It will be lovely to have him hidden away again.“

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

IstillloveU · 24/10/2022 10:43

Could we also please stop with the partying talk. Ok, it was crass, crude, criminal (or illegal) and showed an astounding level of entitlement and lack of empathy. However, who partied and when (believe me, they were not the only ones), is not a massive concern to me right now. Right now? My only concern is the economy as, if we remain in freefall and don't pull the parachute cord, we're fucked. Get over the parties they held. I know it was hurtful and hateful and horrible. Inconsiderate. Nasty.

But we need to put things into perspective. Our main issue right now is the economy. We need to focus on that and then, when that's stable, we can lynch them all if that's what will be seen as justice and believe me when I say that them having cheese and wine and BYOB and whatever else they dined on incensed me for the sheer insensitivity of it but it's not my concern right now. Later, we can skull them if that's so desired. I still feel absolute terror when I hear the words lockdown or covid restrictions. I didn't think I'd survive it. I'm not immune to the offense they caused. But could we focus please on what is an immediate short term priority?

I loved Boris's statement.

'I got the backing I needed, so I could have like, totally run for leadership, and if I had I probably almost definitely would have won. Which would have showed all you arseholes who kicked me out before, ha ha! But.....I'm not gonna run.'

antipodeancanary · 24/10/2022 10:53

£ already up against the dollar and govt borrowing costs down as Sunak edges in on premiership. Hopefully some stability being restored

greenhousegal · 24/10/2022 10:55

Who cares anymore about Moggo? He's just a haunted hatstand.

😂

Just great how BJ kicked off what he was hoping to be his second stab at PM by lying, after getting sacked from being PM the first time for lying.

Lying is just like breathing for him. He'll never, ever learn.

Of course the bankers will love him, there is the NHS privatisation carrot in the pipeline, I wonder if they will issue shares or stealthily sell it to their own cronies.

Long live the bankers!

We need to get these privileged under-educated gombeens out of the political scenery permanently. Could we put a ban on anyone who has been to Eton from ever entering political office?

IstillloveU · 24/10/2022 11:08

I'd love to be a fly on the wall, just for a week, in some of these famed institutions of education which appear to be hothouses for potted plants lol.
