£ already up against the dollar and govt borrowing costs down as Sunak edges in on premiership. Hopefully some stability being restored

Hardly, 10 yr gilt yields were 2.6% at the end of August, now 3.9% and £1.13 to the $ is not stellar.

Thats 10s of billions on UK Govt borrowing costs and big hit on pensions.

Let's hope there's an improvement when someone is appointed and the markets respond. Fingers crossed.

We can only start from where we are, not from where we think we should be.

I'm pretty sure it was $1.15 at one point last Friday. Gosh. I just hope we some improvement soon.

So do i!

Since the start of the war and now Truss, my pension is wrecked :(

As pp have said, Sunak needs to rejoin the SM..... i totally get we can't go back in to the EU but the biggest and quickest way to better economic outlook is an improved relationship with EU.... would also help reduced the 78,000 migrants that have crossed the ch in the last 4 years too.

Wheretheskyisblue · 24/10/2022 12:07

I can't see us joining the SM under Sunak. It was a big relief that BJ didn't get in but Sunak is more right wing and anti EU than Johnson ever was. His main advantage over Johnson is that he is less of a populist and does not believe in making up the numbers so the markets will respond positively. I would expect limited changes to tax (freezing thresholds), spending cuts and further privatisation of the NHS.

peaceandove · 24/10/2022 12:28

I predict that Sunak will be allowed in in order to stabilise the economy for a while, then Boris will be wheeled back out just in time to win the next GE.

No. I think we can get them out once they stabilise the economy. We need to just sit tight for a bit.

Yes quite honestly

I just hope Sunak buys some new suits if he is going to be appearing more, again. The ones he wears make him look like he is near the end of summer term and his parents don't want to fork out on new uniform. Or it shrunk in the wash.

Yes, because that's what the country is desperate for, the look of things.....smdh

Could we also please stop with the partying talk. Ok, it was crass, crude, criminal (or illegal) and showed an astounding level of entitlement and lack of empathy. However, who partied and when (believe me, they were not the only ones), is not a massive concern to me right now. Right now? My only concern is the economy as, if we remain in freefall and don't pull the parachute cord, we're fucked. Get over the parties they held. I know it was hurtful and hateful and horrible. Inconsiderate. Nasty.

But we need to put things into perspective. Our main issue right now is the economy. We need to focus on that and then, when that's stable, we can lynch them all if that's what will be seen as justice and believe me when I say that them having cheese and wine and BYOB and whatever else they dined on incensed me for the sheer insensitivity of it but it's not my concern right now. Later, we can skull them if that's so desired. I still feel absolute terror when I hear the words lockdown or covid restrictions. I didn't think I'd survive it. I'm not immune to the offense they caused. But could we focus please on what is an immediate short term priority?

But they've been screwing over the economy and country for over a decade now. We need a broad coalition of people that can actually run the country now. Nothing to do with parties that were held, the party in government are not and haven't been fit for the jobs they're in for years. Sadly they got in last time 'cos of leaving the EU. Not to mention they now want to rip up all the environmental protections that were jointly agreed when we were still an EU member. An area where there could be a lot of job creation. Of course there are a lot of jobs that could be increased in areas we need them. i.e. Tax Office, DVLA and all the other areas decimated due to having a 'small state'. Also remember that deregulation really means getting rid of the protections we've all enjoyed in all sorts of ways. Including workers' rights.

I think this is calculated on his part. In the same way he did with May.

High chance Tories will lose the next election (whoever is pm) - or at least be in hung parliament territory. I reckon he thinks let Sunak lose next election. When Sunak resigns he will stand (he probably will need to move to a safer seat) and believes he could get back in.

I think he thinks that, too.

Hopefully he will be in jail for treason by then, sharing a cell with Rees-Mogg.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 25/10/2022 08:33

The timeframe for that isn't going to work for Johnson. He'd have to spend years in opposition and possibly wait until 2029 even in the event that the Tories are only out one term, for another chance at the job he fucked up. He'll be 65 by then and it could be half a decade of his life. He doesn't have the work ethic or attention span for that gig.

No. We can focus on two things at once.

We not only can, we need to focus on two things at once.

If we ignore the criminality, the greed, the callous disregard for the vulnerable, the backhanders, the cash for honours, the one-law-for-you-and-no-laws-for-us attitude, then we will never stabilise the economy, because we will still be stuck with the same corrupt self-serving tossers who have driven this country into the ground like a 6-inch nail, and they will continue to corrupt and self-serving.

Yes. If you don't understand this, and @IstillloveU demonstrably doesn't, you've no business telling other people they're doing it wrong. Honestly, anyone who thinks it's simply about parties is too naive to be allowed on the internet unsupervised.

This. In spades.

Sunak was part of that government, up to his neck as the fpn showed.

Absolutely agree - and it’s the failure by some/?many that have created this international laughing stock and utter shitstorm.

Not if you're starving and out of a job. Then you might have a little more to occupy your mind.

L1ttledrummergirl · 25/10/2022 16:56

We are a rich country. People shouldn't be starving, that's down to how the government redistribute the wealth.

No-one should be starving or dependent on food banks in the UK, the reason they are us directly caused by the governments decisions and judging by Sunaks first appointments there will be no change.

It's disgusting.

Of course the bankers will love him, there is the NHS privatisation carrot in the pipeline, I wonder if they will issue shares or stealthily sell it to their own cronies.

Long live the bankers!

IDS was on about 'the good of the country' which of course to him means the country hasn't bee ground under the tory boot enough and there's still our things they can flog off. The NHS just being one of those.

A lot of third world countries are rich too. Or at least their governments are.
