A takeaway once a week?

MsMiaWallace · 23/10/2022 09:07

Does anyone else have on average one takeaway a week?

We have fallen into the routine of this, Sat night (if I'm not at work) Indian takeaway & wine.
For me & DH Food lasts us 2 days £27.

We can easily spend over £100 on a takeaway here!

SuspiciousHedgehog · 23/10/2022 21:27

No, my cooking is always better
I'm guilty of the odd breakfast on the go. Greggs Maccy Ds.

WalkingOnSonshine · 23/10/2022 21:29

We do one every 2-4 weeks depending what we have on.

If we get Chinese, Indian, pizza or Turkish, we’ll get enough to reheat the next day.

Orange93 · 23/10/2022 21:37

We have takeaway most Fridays

Metabigot · 23/10/2022 21:39

About once or twice a month. Prices gone up and portion sizes down so its not really good value for money anymore

JustOrderADoor · 23/10/2022 21:41

bloodywhitecat · 23/10/2022 09:14

We used to as a couple but now it is just me I can't be bothered to go and collect a takeaway so don't bother any more.

@bloodywhitecat
what about getting one delivered?

Every Friday night because i have had enough of planning and cooking a meal by then but we have been discussing the need to potentially drop it to every other week. Its definitely a treat for us and something we will need to give up if our bills and food shop increase anymore.

Spend between £20 - £40 between 5 of us (2 adults and young 3 children) depending on what we have. Its usually fish and chips as thats the cheapest and stretches between everyone. 2 portions of chips and 2 large cod feeds us all but occasionally we have chinese.

@smilingthroughgrittedteeth

I get the 'fed up of planning/cooking/cleaning up by Friday night!

could you look at a Friday Night Dinner
if you want to stop spending money on takeaway? So every Friday night (or alternate Friday nights) are always the same (No thinking) & easy (not much planning or cleaning up). Supermarket Pizza/ nachos/beans on toast/toasted sandwiches. Ok not the most nutritious, but neither is takeaway & once a week won't hurt anyone.

mindutopia · 23/10/2022 21:53

I literally can’t remember the last time we had a takeaway. Definitely would have been more than about 8 months ago as we moved house and haven’t had one since we moved.

But we live rurally and it’s a 30 minute round trip drive to collect one and honestly I’m a bit of an Asian food snob 😂 so I like my own cooking better even if it means I have to cook it. It’s probably less effort than driving to collect it, finding parking, etc.

What’s the point of this post? We don’t know if you’re earning 10k or 100k. If you like it and can afford it, just do it. It doesn’t matter what other people do.

@AgentProvocateur

why open a thread you're not interested in?

no point in that.

But the whole point is that you don't have to make it at home! Of course I can get pizza cheaper and make it at home. Or curry or whatever else. But on occasion I just want to buy food and eat it without any additional work cos I cannot be arsed.

Yes all the halo polishing was getting a bit much wasnt it? Smug home cooked Mumsnet!

I agree, sometimes you just can't be ARSED!

jessyjo2 · 23/10/2022 22:06

Not every week but less often now that invested in deep fat fryer. 1 or 2 take aways paid for it!

If you live somewhere with decent takeaways great. Even better if they deliver. Or, of course, if you are not a good cook.

We live 6 miles from the nearest town. Only 3 places will deliver - 2 indian restaurants and 1 chinese. The chinese is crap as is 1 of the indians. The other is not much better.

I very rarely feel that I can't be arsed to cook but the thought of paying good money for food that me and/or DH can cook so much better soon changes my mind.

We make sure we have decent home cooked meals in our freezer

userxx · 23/10/2022 22:27

A lot less then I used to. Im usually disappointed so it's pointless really.

Snowpaw · 23/10/2022 22:30

We used to do about once a fortnight until we moved to a village where nowhere delivers too! Gutting. But it has actually done me good. We do end up going out for quite a few garden centre cooked breakfasts most weeks now, or lunch out at the weekends.

TheChosenTwo · 23/10/2022 22:31

We probably average 3 takeaways a month. This does not take into account my Gail’s deliveroo orders when I am working from home, it’s technically a takeaway but not really a meal for the whole family!
dh does the majority of our cooking, I will do it if he’s not here. Sometimes he cba and we order a takeaway.
usually a curry and a McDonald’s for ds.
last time we got a curry in for the 5 of us it was nearly £120 - I was shocked! It was 5 mains and then a mixture of sides, breads and rice and there was enough for a few to have leftovers the next day though.
My favourite is Thai takeaway but not everyone else enjoys that so I occasionally get it for myself if other people are out. Also love a Chinese although maybe only order that once a year, it tends to disagree with me, can’t believe a pp saying a Chinese for 2 costs around £11 😱

Exactly. You don't even need to 'cook' when you buy deli food or sushi or ready type meals from the supermarket! And it's much cheaper (and probably healthier).

I guess it depends on where you live. I can get amazing sushi delivered, so much better than a supermarket. my husband and I work 50hrs a week each, we mostly cook from scratch, but on a Friday, it’s a treat to relax, let someone else take up the slack and get something tasty delivered that would take us ages to cook from scratch. Especially when you’ve picked them up from nursery, do the whole bath, story routine. It’s the night we crack out the nice wine, put our feet up and have a date night. Sometimes we’ll cook and have a romantic meal, sometimes it’s delivered [lucky to get proper 3-course restaurant delivery where you have to do the bare minimum], or just get an amazing wood fired sourdough pizza in 10mins of ordering and watch a good film. Absolutely worth its weight in gold!!

Becgoz7 · 16/04/2023 17:56

We always used to but now we eat out once a month ISH and don't bother with a takeaway, we had five guys last week and I'm out for a Chinese this week (our in London so we just make the most of it)

How on earth does this sort of inconsequential thread get bumped ? What is the route to finding it and posting on it? Absolutely intriguing!

@Becgoz7 care to enlighten us? Honestly intriguing 😂

FrownedUpon · 16/04/2023 20:12

‘Fakeaways’ are never the same in my view & we’re pretty decent cooks. We either eat out or get a takeaway once a week. It’s a nice treat.

Becgoz7 · 16/04/2023 23:06

The same way you did I suppose 🤷

It came up underneath one I was reading

Phantomime · 16/04/2023 23:15

Friday night Chinese, a tradition since we got married.
We are also guilty of the occasional Tuesday night ‘fancy the chippy’ as well 😳

Phantomime · 16/04/2023 23:16

Oooft zombie got me.

still, I absolutely fancy the chippy tomorrow night now so there’s that 😂

reluctantbrit · 16/04/2023 23:30

Does a Chippy count? The prices from restaurant takeaways are not a lot less than going to the restaurant and the food never is as hot as I want it, even if I collect.

I also love to sit down and be served, when the difference is less than 10% I better go out and have a sit down meal than a rushed one with plastic containers and food which may need re-heating and doesn't look appetising anymore.
