A takeaway once a week?

MsMiaWallace · 23/10/2022 09:07

Does anyone else have on average one takeaway a week?

We have fallen into the routine of this, Sat night (if I'm not at work) Indian takeaway & wine.
For me & DH Food lasts us 2 days £27.

How do you guys get takeaways for so cheap?? I'm in London Zone 2 and a nice quality take away is £70 for 3 of us which will last 2 days. Because of the price we only get this 1-2 times per month.

We probably just sacrifice on the quality Grin

Once every week and occasionally, ok often, twice a week. My mobility is really poor and I struggle to stand at cooker long enough to work. DH is veggie so won't be cook meat. Also sadly he has to pick up slack with cleaning and childcare now too. Always a Chinese Tuesday sometimes an Indian at end of week too. Chinese cost £40 for 4 people. Indian cost a bit less £36 for 4 people because 2 share generous portion of rice. Before my back was bad takeaway was only about once a month and I do enjoy cooking.

My Mum can't stand at the cooker for long but finds a perching stool helps. This means she can do a bit more cooking and doesn't have to rely on Dad quite so much. She irons sitting down now too.

MulberryMoon · 23/10/2022 13:10

We normally spend about 30-40 for 3 in zone 6. Sometimes less from the chippy

Babyroobs · 23/10/2022 13:12

We used to every week but it has just become too expensive so we have gone to every two or three weeks.

TreacsPotNoodle · 23/10/2022 13:19

We probably get 1 or 2 takeaways a months but we eat out once a week wether that's an evening out or Sunday pub lunch. I do love a Chinese though, my guilty pleasure.

TenoringBehind · 23/10/2022 13:29

no

too expensive for a family of 4
out nearest is 6 miles away and goes cold (and isn’t that great in the first place)

MassiveSalad22 · 23/10/2022 13:31

God yeah we’re on deliveroo all the time!! I miss cooking but it’s just so convenient. We are still in the newborn deliveroo habit and baby is 6 months old 😬 couple times a week. Not usually unhealthy either, just not good for the bank balance. I deliveroo a top up shop if DH is away too 😄

What is this leftover food you speak of🤣

Buckland123 · 23/10/2022 13:57

Hardly ever. I always feel grim after a takeaway - so much salt, fat, calories - the discomfort afterwards just isn’t worth it!
Also it’s so much money - round here a curry dish (just the curry, no rice) is about £9, plus rice & naan is another £6-7, plus even more for extras like bhajis, side dishes etc. for 4 people it’s about £60 which is too much money for what it is. I begrudge paying the best part of a week’s food budget on one meal that will just make me bloated, even if it tastes nice.

Medoca · 23/10/2022 14:07

I love cooking, and I’m good at it. We also get takeaways, I don’t see how they are mutually exclusive. When I’ve finished work late, put the children to bed, sometime I don’t have the time to make sushi! Or fire up the charcoal grill for lamb adana, babaganoush, elaborate salads and dips. We have an amazing sourdough pizza place next door - it’s barely worth me nurturing the starter and firing up the bbq to cook the pizza when it’s so good next door.

JanetSally · 23/10/2022 14:10

A handful of times a year. Apart from pizza I'm not really a fan. Most of them don't taste that good.

TwoCoffeesPlease · 23/10/2022 14:12

In lockdown we started on one every week on a Friday without fail. We felt we needed it to structure the weeks and feel like it was the weekend. At the end of 2020 I realised we had spent £2000 that year on take aways!!

We now have one about once or twice a month and have something like a sainsburys pizza on a Friday which meets a similar need

mydogisthebest · 23/10/2022 14:16

We hardly ever have a takeaway. Maybe twice a year.

Me and DH both love cooking and are fairly good cooks. We get a takeaway or even go out for a meal and say to each other "we can do better than this". It's just a waste of money for us.

Our favourite food is Indian but where we live now the Indian restaurants are crap. We can cook a pretty good curry and Indian bread. Our onion bhajis are better than most restaurants as they are not greasy like so many are

Whistlesandbell · 23/10/2022 14:19

We sometimes do what we call a fakeaway and I cook the protein bit and we order yummy chips from our local restaurant. They use a secret ingredient and won’t tell anyone what it is.

maddiemookins16mum · 23/10/2022 14:22

We’ve cut down in them, never did them weekly tbf, but probs every 3 weeks. Now it’s every 2 months.

Remember what forum you're on. They probably have leftovers after splitting a bag of chips and one large fish between 4

and left over curry does 8 meals.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 23/10/2022 15:00

We have one or two a year. I always find them to be a disappointment.

hattie43 · 23/10/2022 15:01

Friday evening every week .

confessionsofamiddleagewoman · 23/10/2022 15:20

About once a month for both financial and health reasons

PaperMonster · 23/10/2022 15:35

No. We live in the sticks and OH is a v fussy eater. So it’s something we only usually do when we’re away.

Lilacsunflowers · 23/10/2022 15:59

I'm surprised how many of you regularly spend so much money on (generally) unhealthy food.

I feel we can do much better ourselves at home, even without much time (for those prices you can get deli type food or sourdough pizzas etc to make at home with no effort)!

Hugasauras · 23/10/2022 16:04

But the whole point is that you don't have to make it at home! Of course I can get pizza cheaper and make it at home. Or curry or whatever else. But on occasion I just want to buy food and eat it without any additional work cos I cannot be arsed.

Lilacsunflowers · 23/10/2022 16:42

I get that. I guess, is it worth the (large) extra cost? And supermarkets sell ready meals you literally have to heat up.... But fair enough if you have the money Smile
