Seriously the world has gone mad - a woman who is disabled is being sued by her air B and B guests for triggering them.

see her explain here

The items they were triggered by included a wee fridge in the room, a video doorbell etc. it's bonkers. I've been following on TikTok and am appalled at Airbnb stance. The bookers are apparently supported by a group looking to remove disability rights Angry

Weird. I'd have thought their only hope of 'success' (other than whatever perverse kick they might get from persecuting a woman with disabilities) would be if they themselves claimed to have some sort of disability.Confused

She has a petition on change dot org.
search for 'help me show a judge that disabled people aren't scary'

Thanks x

I follow her too.

The 'treatments' these people are getting is reiki to cleanse their auras because in their culture they aren't allowed to be around disabled people apparently.

She knows full well if (when) she wins they will just wait it out until she dies so they don't have to pay compensation.

Reiki 🤦‍♀️ wow

hiredandsqueak · 05/10/2022 12:35

My dd has autism and is hyperempathic and so she feels very deeply for other people's disabiities. It is all documented and recognised by the professionals involved. She is triggered by people with obvious disabilities in so far as it causes her a lot of distress and she has fainted and vomited previously because she has been so overwhelmed but she and we completely accept that she has the problem so we would leave and have left any area where she felt unable to cope as discreetly as possible. She wouldn't be triggered or even comment on disability aids.
Those suing in the clip sound like shysters after making some money.

Cantthinkofanewnameatm · 05/10/2022 12:37

Can’t see it’ll get anywhere in any court.
They we’re offered alternative accommodation. They refused.
They decided they were triggered by a disabled person. Really? They’ve never seen a disabled person before?

Boycotting Air bnb for sure.

Untitledsquatboulder · 05/10/2022 12:39

So is this really about disability discrimination or is it a challenge to Irelands laws around trans issues?

This reply has been hidden until the MNHQ team can have a look at it.

GiantKitten · 05/10/2022 12:44

Didn’t watch whole thing so excuse me if this was explained:
does Ireland have the same Equality Act as the UK? Same protected characteristics etc?
the wording of “hierarchy” and “identity”, and their being “anti-woke”, suggests that there might be an actual anti-trans agenda here?
and can foreigners (these are American?) normally challenge the law in another country?
I’m baffled 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Lysianthus - you can make a thread including a link on the Petitions and Activism board.

www.mumsnet.com/talk/petitions_noticeboard

I think you can then make a link to that thread.
(The MNHQ policy is to prevent people spamming boards with petitions I believe though it's a bit daft IMO if there's one link from a relevant thread. )

Sorry. Didn’t know this and I posted a link to Change.
Feel free to delete my post above which gives the link. Thanks.

BitossiBlues · 05/10/2022 12:45

Unfortunately, this is the logical result you get from any type of self ID law, where boundaries and safeguarding are trumped by someone's "sense of self", demand that society as a whole indulge their fantasies for fear of being called a bigot, and corporate interests cow tow to a sacred caste that must never be criticised. Much like this unfortunate woman, people think it's great until some chancer abuses the system, appropriates its mechanisms for their own nefarious interests, and it lands on your doorstep.

HOTHotPeppers · 05/10/2022 12:46

Surely if your mental health issues are so severe that you are triggered by disability aids then you should live in a secure unit and they would be better suing the NHS for not sectioning them?

Wetblanket78 · 05/10/2022 12:47

How ridiculous my kids have special needs. When they were little some parents used to pull they're kids away. I used to say you can't catch they're disability don't you know. Just plain ignorance I'm sure she will get loads of disabled people wanting to stay at her accessable air bnb now.

Thelnebriati · 05/10/2022 12:47

No, its the rights of disabled people that are under attack here.
Its the support of self ID that has made it possible to bring the legal challenge.

WalkingThroughTreacle · 05/10/2022 12:51

They and the group supporting them should be charged with a hate crime. Not much in the way of inhumanity surprises me these days but this has. How on earth can you find enough twisted scumbags to actually form a group against disability rights?

sausage767 · 05/10/2022 12:53

I don’t know anything about this other than what I’ve read in this thread.

So at great risk of being flamed.. is this actually true?

i have to ask because I’ve been an Air BnB host before so know quite a bit about their policies and processes. And this is absolutely not what Air BnB would do to resolve such a dispute.

mrstreacle · 05/10/2022 12:54

Surely if this is so bad for them they'd never be able to leave their home or watch TV in case a disabled person appeared. I'm disabled and so is my husband and I have never felt so angry in my life as I am now. What happens if it gets to court and the judge or one of the officials is disabled?

Adult colouring books??? aromatherapy?? WTF
Emotional support animals???

Awesome woman.

I agree. ‘Anti Trans’ really means women concerned about sex based rights. No way in hell would women be doing this.

I really do think this was staged and an attack on the equality act dragging this poor women with not ling left to live with it.

Despicable

Irridescantshimmmer · 05/10/2022 12:57

The woman is covered by the Equality Act 2010 so she could counter sue.

It's a fair question as it just seems so outrageously bizarre. Almost spoof like. You almost just can't believe it. I was asking myself that question watching the vid.

I saw this too. I’m definitely not going to use Airbnb anymore. It is not just this, but this is a massive stick that broke the camel’s back. Airbnb have become far too difficult to use and down right uncaring/unreasonable in their policies.

going to look for the petition now.

I think there needs to be local legislation about protecting disabled people and to make this type of discrimination and issue so that Airbnb needs to obey common sense legislation in order to operate in the jurisdiction.

Absolutely agree about making this a discrimination issue - it's shocking!

Can she countersue for discrimination? I'd contribute to a crowdfund for this - it's ridiculous, and if it wasn't so vicious it would be laughable.

I hope it gets thrown out of court - absolute nonsense!

How do they manage in daily life? Surely they must see people with all sorts of disabilities on an almost daily basis.

Yep. Many of those opposed to self-ID could see what was coming for other oppressed groups, both in terms of a hierarchy of oppression based on feeling, and a backlash against minority rights.

ElEmEnOhPee · 05/10/2022 13:01

This is so upsetting. I feel like suing the people responsible for upsetting me, it's how it works right?

Seriously even if this goes nowhere the amount of stress and upset this has caused this poor woman is unforgivable, I hope she is able to fundraise to countersue them for the distress they've undoubtedly caused her. Thankful that she appears to have a lot of support and seems to be a strong individual, I'm not sure how well I would cope with something like this (I have mental health problems), it could truly be enough to tip me over the edge.

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 05/10/2022 13:02

It’s disgraceful. How could someone treat a terminally ill disabled woman in this way?

We should know who is behind the legal action.

thetemptationofchocolate · 05/10/2022 13:04

LunaLights · 05/10/2022 12:23

What culture does not allow its people to be around disabled people?

I have been wondering about that, too.
None of the major religions have anything which debars members from being around people with disabilities. All of them encourage followers to be supportive of those who are struggling in any way.
The 'guests' and the group funding this must be so full of hate and bitterness. It will poison them in the end.
