When are you putting your heating on this year?

Just that really. Our thermostat is always on 17. It's now 15 in the house. Might turn it on? Seems early though.

We're on an older fixed tariff, thank goodness.

Not until I have trained DH to shut the back door. Even if it's below freezing he will go in and out leaving it wide open. Impervious to the cold apparently. We have been married several decades so I'm not expecting a sudden change this winter 😂

@FourChimneys

We had an automatic closer fitted to a door years ago, it was brilliant & stopped a certain murder!!

For you, perhaps - but shorts at that temperature is hardly a widespread thing in the NE, hardly anyone is wearing them. . Where in the NE are you btw? It’s not been 17/18 every day for the whole of Sept.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 17/09/2022 17:15

It’s 17.5° outside at the moment but the house felt chilly so I have lit the wood burner. I hope to avoid putting on the CH until mid October but I do feel the cold and I find it difficult to warm up once I am cold.
I have put the wool duvet on the bed and I had a thick fleece blanket on top of it last night.
I have stocked up with wool jumpers, I have knitted new socks and there are plenty of crocheted throws so we certainly won’t be cold. It’s the uncertainty that’s difficult to manage at the moment.

HideTheCroissants · 17/09/2022 11:34

That certainly is a wee bit chilly! Whilst here in SE London I went out at 9:30 for an hour or so - walked to the shops, posted some letters - all in a T shirt! 😎

@HideTheCroissants didn't you get a cold bum?

Always4Brenner · 17/09/2022 17:17

As late as I can still sunny oodie off now but lovely today.

cicatrix1 · 17/09/2022 17:17

Just when it feels cold really,We have a very warm flat...thanks to the livingroom come kitchen.Never heat the bedroom cant stand being hot ,window always open at night.Back bedroom heating on plus window open (in winter)to dry washing.

Overthebow · 17/09/2022 17:23

It’s still warm here in the south, I was in a t-shirt today and it was 18c and sunny all day so no where near needing the heating yet. We’ll wait until October as usual. There’s no need until it’s actually cold.

user1745 · 17/09/2022 17:49

As late as we possibly can! It's getting quite chilly now but still very bearable.

Tumbleweed101 · 17/09/2022 18:13

House is currently 18C downstairs (will likely be colder upstairs as window is open). Windows have been open for a while today, although small ones not the big ones - until my children moaned! Heating will stay off until we are still cold with jumpers and blankets but I go by how we feel not a date or month.

I think we all feel the cold differently so will all have different ways of managing it.

Ours is on today as it's chilly sat on the sofa. Haven't lit the fire yet tho

Diamondsareforever123 · 17/09/2022 18:17

I won't be able to afford to turn it on at all. I'm 68

nannybeach · 17/09/2022 18:21

SE UK,6.6c when I got up, outside,16c inside. It's 23c now in,14 outside. The boiler is turned off. The central heating in winter would be on 18c, always have a 4.5 duvet on the bed, windows still open at night.

EsmeShelby · 17/09/2022 18:29

The house is still warm so not yet. And I'm in the north

MinervaTerrathorn · 17/09/2022 18:30

When it's both October and cold with a jumper and socks and slippers on. It's 19 in my sitting room and I'm barefoot and in a t-shirt so not yet! Then I will use the one hour function as needed until around the time the clocks change. It's a bit of a transition for us as we will then have to remember to shut the windows!

@HideTheCroissants didn't you get a cold bum?

@TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination … a few funny looks as well TBH! 😂 I’ll remember my jeans tomorrow….

MinervaTerrathorn · 17/09/2022 18:34

Slept with bedroom windows open last night, cooked breakfast with kitchen window open, went into town in t-shirt, ankle jeans and no socks. The cold snap feels nice at the moment. Of course I don't like months of it, and the dark much less so, but enjoying it for now.

Iguanainanigloo · 17/09/2022 18:43

Never if I can help it! House is still showing as 24 degrees, and it's even hotter on the ground floor so definitely not needed yet. Hoping we won't need it at all, as our house doesn't tend to get too cold. Where is everyone where it's so cold already? It's still warm in the s.w

17caterpillars1mouse · 17/09/2022 18:45

Christmas day

userxx · 17/09/2022 18:47

Not before October, I'll layer up if I get cold.

Questionaboutjoboffer · 17/09/2022 18:53

As late as possible.

thepurplewhisperer · 17/09/2022 19:06

We are not using the heating this year. It will be the first. Our pipes are lagged so hopefully no freezing.

I've stocked up with solids fuel and logs doting the cheaper summer months. Using our woodburner is how I plan to keep us warm this winter.

4.5 duvet? That's the lightest you can possibly get! I have a 20 tog plus 2 wool blankets folded double

PollyEsther · 17/09/2022 19:41

I won't consider it until the temperature drops below 10 degress outside during the day/evening. Even if it's the evening I'll avoid, because we have (heated) blankets, throws, hoodies, hot water bottles etc. I've no idea what temperature that is inside tbh because our thermostat is shit.

I'm not actually stingy with it, it's just that I think we should all go for these other mitigations as first line of 'defence' against cold, rather than defaulting to the heating. We do not have the heating on overnight as it's unnecessary, IMO. We have electric blankets if it's baltic, but rarely need them.
