When are you putting your heating on this year?

Just that really. Our thermostat is always on 17. It's now 15 in the house. Might turn it on? Seems early though.

We're on an older fixed tariff, thank goodness.

We usually have it on between October and March/April as I've always been mindful of the cost. It's 5 degrees here (Midlands) at the moment, but will get up to temperature pretty quickly as it's been mild in the day.

knickersniff · 17/09/2022 07:51

After the summer we've just had I'm loving feeling the chill so not for a while yet .

Unforgettablefire · 17/09/2022 07:52

CastleTower · 17/09/2022 07:39

We've put it on for a bit to "test out the radiators". 😄

In the NE, so it's 7 outside first thing. Brr.

Freezing isn't it I've just looked at the app and it "feels like" 3. The front of my house is north facing and doesn't really get any sun. It's going to warm up a bit later...Apparently.

trilbydoll · 17/09/2022 07:56

We never turn ours off. It is set to 19° at the moment and I don't think it has kicked in yet. It's cold outside this morning though, I'm surprised it hasn't come on.

WeAreTheHeroes · 17/09/2022 07:41

I've put ours on this morning - it's 3 degrees here and bloody cold. We've had the stove on in our living room most evenings this past week.

@WeAreTheHeroes where abouts are you? Somewhere gorgeous I bet!!

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 17/09/2022 08:03

SirChenjins · 17/09/2022 07:43

We’ve already put it on for the odd burst here and there. It was 3.5 degrees on my journey to work yesterday, it’s 7 here this morning according to the forecast but feels colder outside. We’re obviously watching our usage but thank goodness for a fixed tariff.

@SirChenjins

Brrr it was 9° on the work/school run here yesterday, that felt cold enough!!

sre you in Scotland too?

WeAreTheHeroes · 17/09/2022 08:04

@TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination - edge of the Peak District in Derbyshire. It is beautiful. We're in an elevated position so it's always a couple of degrees colder than places relatively close by.

@WeAreTheHeroes yeah I'd swap!! End of terrace suburbia 🏘 it was the edge of countryside, but rapidly getting built on! Love my job though so can't move yet (hopefully not for a good while), so have to just dream about the countryside or sea side!!

LubaLuca · 17/09/2022 08:10

Probably not for a while. Still wearing short sleeves in the day, and it's not getting noticeably cold at night yet. I might put a blanket on the end of the beds when I change the sheets tomorrow.

ilovebagpuss · 17/09/2022 08:12

Trying to hold out, we have a log burner so will probably have a few fires if it's get really chilly on a day we are all here like the weekend.
At moment its fine with with dressing gown or slanket in evenings.
Would like to get to end of Oct ideally and will just have morning and afternoon boosts from timer.
If DD's start getting uncomfortable will rethink. At least the log burner lures them into the living room for a bit 😀

pompomdaisy · 17/09/2022 08:13

My boiler heating setting still switched off currently. I want to get to end September to build up a big credit which will carry us through winter hopefully.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 17/09/2022 08:14

This morning. It was 16.5c in my youngest’s room. I’ve just whacked it on manually for now but later I will put on timers for the mornings. I will be getting winter duvets out soon. I’m worried about over heating DD2 but I also often cosleep with her so I will just get a throw for now.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 17/09/2022 08:14

It’s also time to get out hats, scarfs and gloves.

User777777 · 17/09/2022 08:16

Mine is on now, first day, set it at 20C 6am until 10am, then 20C 5pm until 10pm, haven't set any daytime schedule yet and never have it on overnight

SaharaSahara · 17/09/2022 08:21

I usually have it on by now but I’m being strict with myself and have bought a fluffy dressing gown which will be used more than the heating!

OrangeSamphire · 17/09/2022 08:21

This thread really emphasises the regional differences in climate across the U.K.

We are still windows and doors open all day, summer duvets, no heating (south Cornwall). But I remember when we lived in the south east of England how quickly the evenings would feel cold in September.

The nights often stay mild here right into the winter and on sunny days there’s no need for heating at all. It’s the grey wet days when the wood burner goes on.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 17/09/2022 08:22

Mind you, having said that, it's 5° outside here and it's not as pretty as the Peak District!!

14° in the bedroom (west facing, all the windows still wide open!! - have been since the spring) duvet on recently.

18/19° in the lounge, (east facing, sun streaming in).

heating 'off' on thermostat, but that's a 'frost' setting at 5° for the pipes. That'll only come on if I'm away as the heating will go on long before the inside gets down to 5°

I wonder how the people in London got on last night, queuing to pay their respects. Brrrr

Sixsmith · 17/09/2022 08:23

Every year I try to hold out til December. More clothes. Oodies are life

Brasschamberstick · 17/09/2022 08:23

Very surprised so many people "need" heating yet.....

Whatever the opposite of evolution is, it's happening to the human race (at least in developed countries).

MassiveSalad22 · 17/09/2022 08:24

Our thermostat said 19 last night and I was chilly, which I was surprised about because on the weather if it’s 19 degrees I always think that’s fairly nice? Sofa blankets sorted us out though. So we’ll do that for a few more weeks I’d have thought. Kids have fleecy PJs and always sweat under their duvets anyway, and they have their own fleecy blankets too. So will probably only heat the living room and bathroom.

Honestly how cold is it where you are today?

Different parts of the uk have very different temps. It has snowed in the north of Scotland. How can you say that's not cold?

Indierock66 · 17/09/2022 08:25

I want to hold off as long as possible but it is only 14c in the living room 🥶 My fear is once it's on, there's no going back!

BCBird · 17/09/2022 08:28

When I'm cold
I.understand we have got to be more mindful about using energy now more do than ever but refuse to.be cold. Will deal with the bill when i get it. Never had a fixed date in mind for turning it on. I pay it so I decide when

Mindymomo · 17/09/2022 08:30

I’ve put ours on last 2 nights, just for an hour whilst I have a bath. DH said it’s cold downstairs as dog is used to sitting in conservatory with all the doors open. DH took dog out at 6 am, it was cold and heating came on.

LT2 · 17/09/2022 08:30

East of England here. Only just started to stop opening the windows so wide yesterday. Won't turn the heating on until October I think (luckily we are away from home for the last week of September so not long to go). We have an 8 month old so don't want it to get too cold but he sweats in bed so he's quite a hot boy. Temp needs to be under 20 for babies to sleep, ideally (that was impossible in the Summer!)
