When are you putting your heating on this year?

Just that really. Our thermostat is always on 17. It's now 15 in the house. Might turn it on? Seems early though.

We're on an older fixed tariff, thank goodness.

It depends on your usage as the cap is on the per unit price not the total cost.

Right. I don’t really get it but will look into it. Thanks.

Poppop4 · 17/09/2022 11:04

Mine went on this morning for a couple of hours and I wish I’d put it on last night my house felt really cold!

CastleTower · 17/09/2022 11:17

@Sunshineismyfriend The new price is still twice what it cost last winter - so people who already struggled last year may be planning to do without. It's a very sad situation.

Tried to put mine on this morning as it was 6 degrees outside.
no pressure in the boiler and topping it up hasn’t worked. Need to wait for someone to look at it 😩

MrsMontyD · 17/09/2022 11:30

It's 14 here at the moment, it dropped to 5 last night (same temperature as last Christmas Eve, won't go below 8/9 overnight for a while yet. Absolutely no need for heating at my house, in fact windows are still open overnight.

I'm off grid for heating so it doesn't go on until everyone has something on their feet, an extra layer of clothing or bedding and its still cold, not chilly, cold and only then until the house has warmed up.

I wouldn't have the heating on overnight unless someone was poorly. In the depths of winter it still only goes on for an hour or so before bed.

The idea of keeping a house at a constant 21 all winter is absolutely alien to me.

It's 5 degrees right now in some parts of the country, which is surely a wee bit on the chilly side?!

That certainly is a wee bit chilly! Whilst here in SE London I went out at 9:30 for an hour or so - walked to the shops, posted some letters - all in a T shirt! 😎

Surtsey · 17/09/2022 11:39

The thermostat is set at 16 at the moment, and it hasn't felt the need to come on yet. The evenings are getting cooler now though, so I reckon it might do soon.

womaninatightspot · 17/09/2022 11:42

Proper heating going to hold out till November but I’m lighting the wood stove so there’s a warm room. It’s also really drying so makes sure the house doesn’t feel damp or get mouldy.

Ichli · 17/09/2022 11:59

I clicked mine on just before, plan to turn it off in an hour or two. I normally hold out for a lot longer but its cold rainy and the house felt so cold.

Hoppinggreen · 17/09/2022 12:00

I thinking about putting it on now, it’s 15 degrees and I prefer the house to be around 18
I will certainly be putting it on this evening

SwordToFlamethrower · 17/09/2022 12:01

Hopefully not at all!

dontgobaconmyheart · 17/09/2022 12:03

Whenever the house starts to feel properly cold. I think we have a few weeks grace as there's so much sun here still.

I felt a definite drop here yesterday in the evening so we went round and closed all the windows and doors and I got the new fluffy electric throw out of it's packaging and got that going- absolute heaven. It's warm again today so probably won't resort to properly using the heating for a while but will be bleeding radiators and checking all is working with them this week and ensuring the boiler ready for winter.

Zippedydoo123 · 17/09/2022 12:05

Ds doesn't feel the cold but I have a jumper on.

Trying to hold out until October here.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 17/09/2022 12:25

Our house is currently 18.5 it was 18 earlier despite the chilly night it was 6 degrees at 8:30/9am. We are near Manchester and it’s currently 15 degrees and blue sky sunny.

Heating goes on when it’s colder and darker so the house feels cooler with less sun. Hopefully October but even then just boosts for an hour or so here and there when needed to keep it at 18/19 til winter kicks in! Haven’t needed it yet.

CambsAlways · 17/09/2022 12:52

When we are cold, nothing to do with the months on the calendar

Fire is on. 17 in the house at moment & (supposedly) 14 outside. Harsh cold wind.

I am wearing 3 prs of socks, jeans, 3 layers on top, gloves and having a hot drink.

Last night I had on 6 pairs of socks, 2 sets of PJs, hat, gloves... Bedroom is above the boiler so warmest in the house. I finally resorted to a hot water bottle to get my feet to stop cramping. I really do 'feel the cold'.

Are you ill?

mrsjellaby · 17/09/2022 14:36

Scotland here....heating been on since late August. Thermostat at 18 degrees C and will crank it up when winter really starts. End of October probably.

cookiecreammmpie · 17/09/2022 14:37

Normally I try and wait till the the end of October, but I'll try to wait as long as possible. It's only been mildly chilly so far.

bob78 · 17/09/2022 09:10

My house still will not budge under 23C, I just want to wear a cosy jumper! It'll go on when I feel cold, I've forgotten what that feels like, I've never known my house stay so persistently warm for so long, since July.

Where abouts are you?

its 18° in the house here, I'd say about 13 outside I'm already struggling to remember feeling like it would never cool down.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 17/09/2022 17:00

Startuplife · 17/09/2022 09:32

We’re having a new boiler and radiators in the middle of October. The radiators will be off for a couple of weeks while we plaster and paint behind them.
I thought it would be totally fine and we wouldn’t need the heating until the end of October but last night I woke up freezing! I do sleep naked so will start wearing pyjamas but I thought we weren’t anywhere near needing the heating yet 😭

Yeah I think the summer really lulled us into a false sense of continued warmth!! I couldn't imagine being cold again, but the temp has certainly plummeted this week.

I still have all the doors & windows open as I like the fresh air moving through the house, but for the first in what seems like forever, I looked at the toilet seat knowing it wasn't going to be nice to sit on! I'm going in the shower soon & I kind of wish I had an electric heater in the bathroom I could put on for a few minutes!

and it's weird knowing it'll be cold when I get home tonight!

FuzzyPuffling · 17/09/2022 17:01

Not at all. We'll live. ( Same as last year)
