When are you putting your heating on this year?

Just that really. Our thermostat is always on 17. It's now 15 in the house. Might turn it on? Seems early though.

We're on an older fixed tariff, thank goodness.

Heating is never turned off. It will “activate” if the temp inside the house drops below 18 degrees between the hours set on our timer. We are in the south east the temperature in the house was 19 when I woke up at 6am so I imagine it will be a while before I feel my first warm radiator of the year.

simbobs · 17/09/2022 09:21

When necessary. I have mine in Summer Mode at the moment which means it won't come on at all, even if the indoor temperature drops. I will have to change this in the next couple of weeks, I think, but even then I am going to try and keep the time and temperature modest in consideration of the increase in cost. In our house we have differing opinions on how the heating should be used. When the DC were at school and I was home alone I never used it, and the difference when DH began to wfh is stark.

December I reckon

BooksAndHooks · 17/09/2022 09:22

We never put it on this early. Never before the end of October half term so usually 1st November. Last year we waited until the end of November.

We only had it on 16 last winter so I don’t think we will have it on much at all. It was expensive enough last year, with this year’s cost I don’t think we can justify it even at 16.

I think we won’t have it on a thermostat at all this year will just briefly turn it on manually only when it is really cold.

Sunshineismyfriend · 17/09/2022 09:23

Ours is set to go on when the house drops to 18. Outside is currently 8 but inside is 19 and that’s with a couple of fan light windows open. Does feel chilly today though. I’d like to wait as long as possible before putting the heating on but I think it will be early October. Next week is supposed to be a bit warmer so hopefully can hold out until oct at some point.

User777777 · 17/09/2022 09:24

I always set my thermostat very low during the summer months because we could be away from home and have a rogue cooler day and it will come on and be wasted

Stichintimesavesstapling · 17/09/2022 09:25

We still have windows open here so not planning on putting it on for a long time. Might put it on for the DC in Oct/Nov for 30 mins in the morning and when back from school but the plan is to WFH without any heating all winter if we can. Oodie and star jumps for every email completed.

itsgettingweird · 17/09/2022 09:29

I do t ever consciously switch mine on.

My thermostat is currently set at 18°c.

I shut the lounge window at 5am when I got up to take ds training this morning as it was cold. Not cold enough for heating but temps definitely dropped last night.

Kitchen, bathroom, dining room and my bedroom window are still open.

So until I've shut the windows (they've been open since April!) I won't even consider the heating.

Usually it comes on once it's below 5°c outside and remained that way for a period of time. I just let my thermostat do its thing Grin

Startuplife · 17/09/2022 09:32

We’re having a new boiler and radiators in the middle of October. The radiators will be off for a couple of weeks while we plaster and paint behind them.
I thought it would be totally fine and we wouldn’t need the heating until the end of October but last night I woke up freezing! I do sleep naked so will start wearing pyjamas but I thought we weren’t anywhere near needing the heating yet 😭

CrunchyCarrot · 17/09/2022 09:33

I turn it on when I start feeling cold - which was yesterday morning. Saw the thermostat was showing 17'C (that's definitely below my personal warmness limit) and so I turned the heating on for half an hour to get it up to 18.5 where I'm comfortable. After that it was OK for the rest of the day. Same thing this morning.

I was too cold in bed last night, will change my duvet to the autumn weight one tonight.

halfthesun · 17/09/2022 09:41

I live in Hove - blankets on sofa last night but no heating ... hoping not to turn heating on at all! Confused

RedToothBrush · 17/09/2022 09:54

I went out at 6am. The car said it was 4C and I got a frost warning. Its supposedly colder than normal for this week of the year.

I will NOT be putting on the heating for sometime. When I was driving home, there was water vapour rising off the local water - because the water is still warm.

Likewise the heat retained in our house is still warm, and there is enough sun to warm the house pretty well during the day.

I think we are aiming for November. We managed that last year. Last year was a particularly mild year, but I think we can do it.

Now is the time to crack on with jumpers and blankets. Heating can still wait a while

UseOfWeapons · 17/09/2022 09:57

Mine will come on automatically, when the temperature at its preset time is below 17.5C. If I’m cold, I’ll microwave a beanbag!

MenopauseSucks · 17/09/2022 10:00

My thermostat is set at 18c so it came on this morning...
I was hoping to get away with it until October.
At this time of year, it'll come on in the morning & that's that. I'm at home most of the day so I like to start with a warm house. I've opened all the curtains on the south- east side of the house so getting some morning sun in which helps.
I even changed my duvet to 10.5 tog yesterday as I was cold under my summer 4.5 tog duvet two nights in a row. A great night's sleep!

HappyPeach · 17/09/2022 10:01

I won't be putting mine on at all this year. Jumpers, hot water bottles, lots of blankets & frequent exercise to keep warm in this house.

YorkieTheRabbit · 17/09/2022 10:03

It went on yesterday evening for an hour. Could be the same again this evening, it’s sunny but cool outside and as it’s much lower in the sky at this time of year and we’re surrounded by trees, it doesn’t really warm the house. Getting near lighting the stove.

TheLongGallery · 17/09/2022 10:06

We have just put the quilt on the bed after months of just a sheet and a single blanket. We will resist for as long as possible. DH feels the cold far more than me. We have decided once his extra warm boot slippers and fleecy joggers aren’t enough it’s going on. I can manage without heating more than most.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/09/2022 10:07

Our thermostat is broken so you have to physically turn on the heating if you want it on

I've just shut the windows in London for the first time in about 5 months today - not cold enough yet for me to put the heating on

DiscoStusMoonboots · 17/09/2022 10:10

I live in a relatively new build and one of its few decent points is its retention of heat - mammoth 24 degrees in our lounge currently. Hoping to hold off the underfloor heating for a while as it can be a real money pit...

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 17/09/2022 10:17

Not yet. It was a bit parky when I hung the washing out this morning at 7.30. But right now I'm sitting in my northern, north facing garden with a coffee, wearing a sweater but no coat, and it's very pleasant.

FourChimneys · 17/09/2022 10:22

Not until I have trained DH to shut the back door. Even if it's below freezing he will go in and out leaving it wide open. Impervious to the cold apparently. We have been married several decades so I'm not expecting a sudden change this winter 😂

Sunshineismyfriend · 17/09/2022 10:28

My husband said that now Liz Truss has lowered the cap we will be paying less through the winter than we are now, as we are currently paying more than the new cap. Is this right? From what I’m reading people are still worrying and planning to go without heat so I’m wondering if he’s got something wrong.

It depends on your usage as the cap is on the per unit price not the total cost.

whimsicalwillow · 17/09/2022 10:48

Thermostat still at 7 degrees and heating switched off here. This is the first morning it's felt really cool in the house. The sun is on the back of the house now so those rooms are warm. Will move to the front this afternoon so all rooms will have some warmth.
I'd like to keep heating off for ad long as possible. We look after our 2 year old granddaughter a couple of times a week. May have to cave if it's too cool for her.

mistermagpie · 17/09/2022 10:58

I'm in Scotland and we currently have our windows open! Heating hasn't been on since about March/April (it's physically turned off) and I'm hoping we can hold off until at least October. New build house though, so insulation and double glazing, plus it's terraced so you get a benefit (the only benefit!) from that.
