When are you putting your heating on this year?

Just that really. Our thermostat is always on 17. It's now 15 in the house. Might turn it on? Seems early though.

We're on an older fixed tariff, thank goodness.

Very surprised so many people "need" heating yet.....

Very surprised that so many people don't understand the geography of the UK Hmm
It's currently 7 degrees where we are @Brasschamberstick. We live on the edge of the Pennines, not London and not the south coast. We are further north and at a higher altitude. Today's forecast is a maximum of 13 degrees - not exactly T-shirt weather.

Beezknees · 17/09/2022 08:32

Whenever I start to feel too cold. Don't need it on yet as my flat was only built in 2008 and is fairly well insulated.

ifonly4 · 17/09/2022 08:36

I normally put ours on early October, held out to around 7 October last year. Hoping we can hold out a bit longer this year, as want to keep bills down.

We're south of Midlands. 18.4c in lounge right now, so heating wouldn't kick in anyway as we set it to 18-18.5c.

Our thermostat said 19 last night and I was chilly, which I was surprised about because on the weather if it’s 19 degrees I always think that’s fairly nice? Sofa blankets sorted us out though. So we’ll do that for a few more weeks I’d have thought. Kids have fleecy PJs and always sweat under their duvets anyway, and they have their own fleecy blankets too. So will probably only heat the living room and bathroom.

@MassiveSalad22 i kind of wish I'd gone with the electric heated towel rail instead. Even now it would be handy to put it on for a bit before a shower and winter mornings! I can't cope with the heating coming in before I get up as it makes me feel sick, but it would be nice to take the chill off the bathroom. Any options to do that now involve far too much work to get electric there, or putting programmable thermostats on all the other rads & nominating a different one to be the one with no temp control. All sounds like a huge hassle & expense, so will just have to toughen up! 😂

When it's consistently cold - I'm hoping to get to November without it.

It's 6C outside ATM, but 20C inside with a few windows ajar. Weather looks sunny for the next week so should be fine with just putting on a jumper in the evenings.

ifonly4 · 17/09/2022 08:39

DD is a student in a high ceiling old sash window flat in Scotland. She hasn't been cold yet, but says she's lucky in that the sun is on her room all morning-early afternoon so it's warmer. The others are on the north west elevation, so cooler. They stuck it out until November last year before putting on.

Hugasauras · 17/09/2022 08:40

It's 5 degrees right now in some parts of the country, which is surely a wee bit on the chilly side?!

abovedecknotbelow · 17/09/2022 08:40

When it's cold enough!

NCHammer2022 · 17/09/2022 08:43

It’s just dipped to 17 in the house which is the lowest it’s been since spring. That’s perfectly bearable with warm dressing gowns etc and it’s a sunny day so the house will warm up soon. So not yet!

User777777 · 17/09/2022 08:43

We are in Northamptonshire and outside thermometer was 7C this morning, it was forecast low temperatures in Oxfordshire last night

I want to hold off as long as possible but it is only 14c in the living room 🥶 My fear is once it's on, there's no going back!

Once it gets cold enough for me to put the heating on, I just start with the 'burst' or 'party' settings. Burst is an hour, the weirdly named 'party' setting I can choose the duration. I do this for a couple/few weeks, until I'm doing it so regularly I might as well program the timer! For a couple/few weeks, it does stop it just being on because it's timed to be though! & I don't feel that 'no going back' until the timer is set!!

mind games 😂😂

what I really need is automatic windows! I like them open when I go to bed, but could do with the big ones closing at say 4am!!

im sure they exist, but I'm equally sure they'd be £££££££

Mine's just put itself on, after I opened the back door for some fresh air in, so I turned it off again & will fiddle with the thermostat later on.

It'll actually go on next month probably. We'll see.

That’s quite unusual - very few people in the NES are wearing shorts. Do you not feel the cold?

User777777 · 17/09/2022 08:50

I did turn the boiler temperature down as been advised recently in various places including on here, I had never really thought about this before as boiler is upstairs in box room so not immediately in my thoughts, I was quite shocked to see it was on very high so turned down a bit now.

Swampmonster1988 · 17/09/2022 08:53

My house is currently 14.5 degrees but I can't afford to put the heating on a lot. I'm saving my money so I can put it on from November. It's not cold enough to worry about it yet but October might be a bit chilly.

lljkk · 17/09/2022 09:00

Fire is likely to get lit at least once this weekend. In theory I'll wait until temp in house is < 17. Is now about 17.5. I last had a fire in June (weird few cold days). I don't care what month it is, I go by temp. Outside is 10 degree high today.

Brideandpredjudice · 17/09/2022 09:01

Mine went on last night.

ThatsGoingToHurt · 17/09/2022 09:02

Almost thought about giving it a quick blast this morning! Then I checked the theromostat in the living room and it said 19.5! It’s cooler upstairs and the LVT in the bathroom and kitchen feels cold.

HairyMothballs · 17/09/2022 09:06

I put ours on for a couple of hours yesterday morning. It's 8 degrees outside, a7 in the house, so I'll probably put it on for a few hours now.

HairyMothballs · 17/09/2022 09:06

17 in the house, I mean

bob78 · 17/09/2022 09:10

My house still will not budge under 23C, I just want to wear a cosy jumper! It'll go on when I feel cold, I've forgotten what that feels like, I've never known my house stay so persistently warm for so long, since July.

Yeahrepublic · 17/09/2022 09:11

We we want to.

The heating doesn't go on if people are still walking round with tshirts and no socks on. Its a ridiculous waste of energy and money. It's harder working from home as I get quite chilly in my office.

It's always been this way but more so this year.

We never have it on overnight anyway.

Hugasauras · 17/09/2022 09:15

I'm in NE of Scotland and last two days it has gone from t-shirts weather to 7 or so degrees when I get up! I don't wear shorts in 7 degrees and haven't seen anyone else round here doing so last couple of days either. In fact at baby group yesterday we were all saying we had had to dig out our coats!
