Lady di would have been queen...

Just the thought of it creates butterflies in my stomach as when she died I was really young and it hurt a lot...even though I didn't understand what really happened. I'm sad the queen has died but just the thought of princess diana becoming queen...it would have been amazing.

If things had been different, Edward would have been allowed to marry Wallis Simpson without having to abdicate, so Elizabeth wouldn't have been queen anyway and the whole Diana question a moot point.

Even if he married her it was unlikely she would have had children, so yes the Crown would have passed to the Queen.

Rockbird · 10/09/2022 01:39

I think people forget the whole fiasco that was their marriage and the situation that followed. It wasn't a happy situation at all and she wasn't the paragon that some people think they remember.

If things were different I could have been Queen.
I would be an amazing queen.
In fact I am closer to being Queen than Diana, as I am alive and she is dead.

Diana would have been a terrible Queen. Yes she'd have been glamorous and sparkly. She'd have held babies and visited hospitals, but the role of a consort is to step out of the limelight and steadily support the monarch in a low-key yet reliable way. Diana would have been dreadful at that. Camilla, however, is exactly the right kind of pragmatic, quietly supportive, and gracious partner.

I'd abolish the monarchy tomorrow, but if we have to have one more monarch, I'm glad it's Charles with Camilla and not Charles with Diana.

You've basically summed up everything I have been quietly saying in my head after seeing some stupid stuff shared on sm similar to this threads title.

Not popular to remember Diana fondly, is it?

this. Everything she did was about the cameras and the glamour. I can’t see her ageing well either, her looks were such a huge thing I think she may have gone down the surgery route.

sweatyannie · 10/09/2022 02:08

Agree. Camilla is perfect for Queen Consort.

PaperwhiteTheGhost · 10/09/2022 02:09

They were divorced though- if she was alive she wouldn't have been queen. Presumably Charles would still have married Camilla and Diana would possibly have married someone else too.

Divorces happen all the time, it's not something to dwell on.

Regardless, she would have been a lovely queen

Why? Why would she in particular have been a lovely queen? I don’t get it. Camilla will be a lovely queen, I’m sure.

I don't know if it would. Wouldn't the crown have passed to Edwards oldest surviving brother upon his death?
That's what Google says anyway.

Right.

Edward would have passed the Crown onto his non-existent child.

Oh no, that’s right, it would have gone to his younger brother’s eldest child, Elizabeth, anyway.

CoolerThanIceCream · 10/09/2022 02:17

Charles and Camilla seem happy.

A happy relationship in your twilight years has got to be worth more than pretty much anything on earth, in my book.

Ignore this. Google was wrong. Well the first site it led me to was anyway.

I don't really remember her at all, I was 9 when she died.

But from what I've read/seen since then, she was quite swishy and liked to be in the press a lot, which isn't what a consort is supposed to be. Also, their marriage was basically arranged and they were both deeply unhappy.

Gosh that’s grim. Perhaps she would have sought excellent therapy and been a lot happier so none of this would have happened.

The one think I do agree on is that she wouldn’t have been the right person in front of the camera. She wouldn’t have been able to stand back an support, needing to shine in her own right. This is also lovely in its own way and Diana had plenty of opportunities to do this as she matured. She was much better suited for a role of divorced princess than Queen Consort.

RedToothBrush · 10/09/2022 02:33

Honestly in a Queen-off I'd pick Camilla over Diana. She's more suited.

I was never a fan of Diana though.

You said yourself you were really young, so probably didn't see the situation as you would have done if a bit older.
. I'm just a bit younger than Diana. I didn't dislike her or Charles but my goodness they were an ill matched pair, and it seems that neither of them were angels.
Had she lived she wouldn't have been queen as they were no longer together and hopefully she'd have found a love match in the way that Charles and Camilla seem to have done.

They are people just like the rest of us at the end of the day. Too much romanticising whilst overlooking the facts I think

^^@RockingMyFiftiesNot sums it up beautifully.

Seeing Charles and Camilla together juxtaposed against footage of when Charles and Di were together, it's so apparent that Camilla is the woman that's best for him. He's so happy with her and content, and she with him. It's actually rather wonderful to see. She's content to play a supporting role and I think she's everything that Charles needs. She brings out the best in him. He seems to have blossomed with her, mellowed.

Diana was fantastic in many ways. The work she did with landmines and HIV victims was what she did best. I don't think queen would have naturally suited her, even if she had stayed with Charles. But she could have done so much good in other ways, I agree.

Her death was terribly sad, but she wasn't without fault and neither was Charles.

GonnaNeedABiggerGoat · 10/09/2022 02:49

The thing is, she died so long ago that she existed in another world really.

We don't know how she would have fared over the last 25 years, what she'd have got up to in that time or how we'd all view her now.

Maybe we'd be on here saying how great our new Queen is: Having cured cancer and ended all wars. Or maybe we'd be on here talking about what a CF she is for parking in David Attenborough's spot and slapping him when he argued back.

People change a lot in 25 years so it's hard to know what kind of Queen she would have made.

Exactly this. They were hardly a match made in heaven and the marriage should never have happened.

This mawkish idolisation of Diana needs to stop. The marriage, which was pretty much forced anyway, was disastrous. Thankfully, they divorced, meaning that she would not be Queen (Consort).

Charles and Camilla are a far better match than Charles and Diana ever were. Camilla will be a great Queen Consort.

Rutland2022 · 10/09/2022 03:39

I’m sad that she died, she deserved to be happy. But she would’ve been a dreadful queen and the king would’ve been miserable as sin too.
Divorce was the best thing for all of them.

Camilla is fabulous, Charles is happy and Diana wasn’t all that. Great mum, nice person but also batshit and not some sort of saint.

The partner if the monarch should never outshine them.

Speedweed · 10/09/2022 03:40

Agree that Diana didn't have the right temperament to ever be queen as she was too fond of the limelight and did some mean things to upstage Charles even after they were divorced.

Also think if she'd lived she would have been a nightmare mother in law...

I’m mid 40s so was about 17 when she died, yes it’s sad for anyone to die but if they will get into a car with a drunk driver and not wear a seat belt it’s on their own head unfortunately.

She was no Saint, neither was Charles, had she lived she’d never have been queen anyway, regardless of how people thought about her.

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 10/09/2022 03:42

Wondered how long it would be.

couldn’t stand the woman personally. Far too self absorbed. Would have been on love island I’m sure…

camilla is a lovely queen and I’m glad the public have embraced her.

I agree, she’d be embarrassing herself on tik toc and wherever people were watching

This ^

I think Charles and Camilla are a great couple, and exactly right for their future jobs.
