That’s Queen consort, of course, but that idea is going to take a lot of getting used to.

Good luck to Camilla. I hope she is able to rise above the spite of those who wish her Ill. She is said to be loving and kind, humourous. Most of all, she and Charles are happy together.

Here's a pondering.....
What were we called during The Queen's reign? Were we Elizabethans or Windsorians or something else? What will we be under Charles' reign? I've googled and it said that under Charles I it was the Caroline Era.

We tend to be referred to as the New Elizabethans. In the future, who knows? Most monarchs don’t get an age or era linked to them -perhaps they don’t live long enough, or nothing particularly remarkable happens. James I links to the Jacobean Age. But Queen Anne doesn’t have an Age. You have to refer to the reign of Queen Anne.

The wife of the King is Queen, therefore Camilla is Queen. If we don't get to choose the monarch, we sure as hell get to choose their spouse.

JenniferBarkley · 08/09/2022 20:37

Argh. Don't get to choose their spouse.

whenwillthemadnessend · 08/09/2022 20:37

I like her. Ok there was trouble in the 90s but she is A much better match for Charles and it's obviously an arranged marriage that was doomed to fail.

Diana Gave the country a heir and was a much loved princess and died too young but I can't blame camilla.

Hillary17 · 08/09/2022 20:38

And your point is?

Viviennemary · 08/09/2022 20:38

But the late Queen mother was Queen Consort too. So Camilla is Queen. Not Quuen regnant of course which I think is the technical expression.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 08/09/2022 20:39

I bet when the OP started this thread they thought it would be a pile on about how much everyone hated her. It hasn’t been…

Can someone explain why she will be a consort and Kate will be queen ,how does that work? Philip was consort too ,I presumed because Queenie was queen when she married him.

Camilla and Kate will both be queens consort, same role. Seems Camilla may use a slightly different title, presumably to make crystal clear she's a differnt (inferior) type of queen to her late MIL.

Philip wasn't King because there is only one type of King, the monarch. No such thing as King Consort. They had been married before Elizabeth was crowned.

Wrong. She is Queen Consort. Wife of the King.

No wonder I was confused 🤣 Thanks

The old shilling was interchangeable with the 5p and went out of service in 1990 when the 5p was made smaller. The old two shilling piece was interchangeable with the 10p and went in 1993 when the 10p was reduced to match the scale of the 5p.

Thanks Antarcticant I could definitely remember having George V & George VI coins and spending them. Decimal day was before I was born but while some pre decimal coins were totally gone (threepenny bit anyone?) I knew others remained in circulation throughout my childhood.

Are planning to organise a vote? Offer King Charles some alternate spouses?

Wrong. She is Queen Consort. Wife of the King.

Splitting hairs. Queen or technically Queen consort, doesn't change anything practically does it? She's going to be Queen as far most people care.

That this will still rile the Diana obsessives cracks me up.

Except she’s not, she’s Queen Consort, it’s not as simple as that.

No more than Prince Phillip was King, which he clearly wasn’t and nobody ever considered he was.

Wrong. She is Queen Consort. Wife of the King.

There is now a King, therefore, the Queen Consort is The Queen. When the Queen Mother's husband was king, the QM (as we all remember her) was HM The Queen.

BrokenMatress · 08/09/2022 20:45

I have met most of the royals
she is lovely- a fantastic queen

BadNomad · 08/09/2022 20:46

She is/will be titled Her Majesty The Queen.

Yes, I'm 48 and remember them well. I kept some of the old 'shilling' and large-style 5p/10p coins when they went out of circulation. They look enormous now we are used to the small ones!

Snowiscold · 08/09/2022 20:47

I don’t think so.

Yes. Consorts hold the equivalent titles of their husbands. Her role is consort, but her title will be queen.

JenniferBarkley · 08/09/2022 20:50

BadNomad · 08/09/2022 20:46

She is/will be titled Her Majesty The Queen.

Suspect she may go by a different title, just as she didn't go by Princess of Wales, for similar reasons (i.e. the Diana crazies). Seems they're going with Queen Consort based on the statements tonight and (from memory, too lazy to look it up) the Queen's own statement a while ago.

But you're right, she is HM The Queen.

JenniferBarkley · 08/09/2022 20:50

No one doubts that Kate will one day be queen, but consider it for Camilla and the frothing starts. Grin
