That’s Queen consort, of course, but that idea is going to take a lot of getting used to.

Suspect she may go by a different title, just as she didn't go by Princess of Wales, for similar reasons (i.e. the Diana crazies). Seems they're going with Queen Consort based on the statements tonight and (from memory, too lazy to look it up) the Queen's own statement a while ago.

But you're right, she is HM The Queen.

I think it's ridiculous if they do that. Eternally condemning the woman, yet he gets to be king without consequences.

Absolutely.

Sally99 · 08/09/2022 20:54

I think she'll do a great job

This is from BBC news in Feb this year.
Until then it was far from definite that Camilla would be called Queen.

If the monarchy must continue, Camilla is a 'least worst' option as Queen. She's one of the less objectionable royals, in my opinion.

This. And Charles seems ok as these things go, too.

All this 'not my queen' bollocks I'm seeing on Twitter is just cringey and also in really poor taste.

Can someone explain why she will be a consort and Kate will be queen ,how does that work? Philip was consort too ,I presumed because Queenie was queen when she married him.

They had been married for years with 2 children when she became Queen. Charles was at her coronation.

There's the question of what she will be called, and the question of what she automatically is. In most of these cases, those questions have the same answer. In this case they may not. Both answers will include Queen, and there is only one Queen living in this country, so we're essentially splitting hairs.

@OttersMayHaveShiftedInTransit I'm older than you and I don't remember pre decimalisation coins in circulation. Shops and banks started taking them out of circulation on 15th February 1971, if you are 49 you weren't born until 1973. All decimalised coins had the Queen on.

One shilling coins were the same size and value as 5p coins. They remained legal tender until the new smaller 5p coins were introduced in 1990.

Similarly two shilling coins (Florins) were the same size and value as 10p coins. They remained legal tender until the new smaller 10p coins were introduced in 1992.

I certainly remember being excited to get one of these coins in my change, and seeing which Monarch was on it and how old it was. I’m a fair bit younger than 49!

I think Camilla will be great, very stable, very dignified. I think Charles and her are a really good pair - to be fair I think she'll probably be better than him!

upinaballoon · 08/09/2022 21:05

Camilla is Queen Consort. I've been used to the idea for months. I'm more adaptable than I think I am. I hope she's still patron of Versus Arthritis.

Is it? They've been married for 17 years.

SirGawain · 08/09/2022 21:12

Camila is not the Queen because she will not be granted the Crown Matrimonial.

cynthiasrevels · 08/09/2022 21:20

I am being very boring, but I am a constitutional historian, so -

The 'crown-matrimonial' was the right for sovereigns to reign jointly. Both assuming sovereignty. Used when females were the direct heir but wanted to be married. (Mary, Queen of Scots in Scotland for example).

Traditionally the Queen has been (most often) the wife of the King, or the sovereign in her own right. All wives of Kings before now have been Queens. There has never been a 'Queen consort' before; the notion of the 'King consort' was cooked up in the 19th c, when Albert wasn't made joint sovereign with Victoria. And that is because sovereignty doesn't encompass explicit powers any more.

That doesn't mean that we shouldn't change!

cynthiasrevels · 08/09/2022 21:22

Also, I think that Charles and Camilla would be excellent heads of state, and he much more so because of their relationship.

BadNomad · 08/09/2022 21:27

We'll know more when the coronation details are revealed. If she's getting anointed and crowned alongside him then we'll know.

lickenchugget · 08/09/2022 21:29

Fine with me.

We already know, as soon as they made the news announcement about the Queens death Charles and Camilla were referred to as the King and Queen consort - it’s been known for ages.

Its not going to be a surprise announcement during his coronation!

Well let's be fair. The entire concept of monarchy is cooked up

Why on earth would she be crowned?

JenniferBarkley · 08/09/2022 21:35

The King's wife is usually crowned. It would be entirely normal (as much as any of this batshittery is normal) for her to be crowned.

A Queen Regnant's husband isn't crowned, because sexism.

RunningFromInsanity · 08/09/2022 21:36

I’ve met Camilla and she’s really lovely.

I don't believe she'll be referred to as "Queen Consort" though. I think she'll just be called The Queen. As in The King and Queen. People want to use "Consort" to put her down, like when Princess Consort was suggested.

Thanks - didn’t know that

In the same way that Prince Philip was king?

🙄

Lovely, are you kidding. She had an affair with Charles while he was married to Diana, nothing lovely about that.

If all that unfortunate business is to be dragged up at this inappropriate time then the part Diana played would need to be looked at. She was no angel, lots of people who pressured him into a 'suitable' marriage bear responsibility for what happened in that marriage, in both familes. It's time to move on.
