If the Queen passes what will happen?

Regardless of your view in the RF, the Queen has been a huge figure nationally and worldwide for a really long time, her death is going to have an impact.

In terms of immediate impact on ordinary members of the public what will happen?

A period of national mourning? What does that mean?

Schools closed? For the funeral?

Sporting fixtures cancelled?

Things like that, or will it all be business as usual with silences used as appropriate respect?

Sports events are starting to get cancelled. I heard arsenal came out in black for the second half of their match just now. I wonder what my primary school will do as they went mad for the jubilee.

Exactly. This ‘insider knowledge’ that it would be broadcast at six was totally incorrect.

No Im not agreeing with you, theres no 'exactly' about it

You chose to jump on someone and call their mate a bullshitter when clearly today unfortunately she passed away and it was more than likely planned for the announcement at around 6ish. It cant happen until a set process of information has disseminated so as soon as that was completed it was announced even though it was slightly delayed.

Just reading the Guardian article about what happens next. Poor old Charles is expected to hold meetings with various government officials and the archbishop etc tomorrow. That doesn't leave him any time for private sorrow - very harsh and difficult for him

I was thinking that, I do feel for him. I wondered whether he might instantly abdicate and hand over to William

We had to have a quick staff meeting after school today to prepare for the change in lessons tomorrow if her death was announced.

He is currently 6th in line, will be 5th which makes him of constitutional significance as one of the top 6 (or 7).
Also her grandson and she may well have wanted him there.

Isn't harry 3rd in line now?

Charles
Willliam
George
Harry

He's only been waiting 72 years..

steppon · 08/09/2022 19:39

@Pinkflipflop85 what would you be changing?

Goldencarp · 08/09/2022 19:52

TugboatAnnie · 08/09/2022 19:20

Poor old Charlie. 72 and starting a new job. No time for sadness, the eyes of the world watching.

He’s 74 next month. Born the same day as my mum.

TugboatAnnie · 08/09/2022 19:53

You're right. I though Huw said 72

SilverLiningPlaybook · 08/09/2022 20:03

Charles was born in November not October.

I admire your optimism, OP!

Has anyone mentioned if it will still be the House of Wndsor? It usually changes after a female monarch. Hopefully it will stay the same

There will be a whole school assembly to start the day (not part of our normal routine). Some sort of reflection/pshe time needs to be timetabled in. Early morning staff briefing to discuss how things will be addressed depending on what children say etc.

steppon · 08/09/2022 20:31

my school aren't doing anything differently

What do you mean 'usually changes'?

We've only had 4 queens (officially, ignoring Matilda and Jane), Mary handed to Elizabeth, both of the Tudor house. Elizabeth handed to James, new Stuart dynasty, Victoria handed to Bertie, same dynasty. Elizabeth has now handed to her son, same dynasty

I think its a missed opportunity for schools, particularly for those doing an integrated curriculum (not sure how many do) not to focus on rules of monarchy, succession, the history of dynasties, her own history etc etc

TugboatAnnie · 08/09/2022 20:57

After Elizabeth it changed to Stuart.
After Anne it changed to Hanover.
After Victoria it changed to Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (later Windsor)

Why would it change? It only changes if it becomes a different family that gets the throne.

I forgot about Anne, poor Anne

Yes but like I said thats if its a new dynasty

Of course he won’t.

TugboatAnnie · 08/09/2022 21:02

Not true after Victoria, her son inherited and took his father's name. The other queens died childless so the house passed to another dynasty.
