If the Queen passes what will happen?

Regardless of your view in the RF, the Queen has been a huge figure nationally and worldwide for a really long time, her death is going to have an impact.

In terms of immediate impact on ordinary members of the public what will happen?

A period of national mourning? What does that mean?

Schools closed? For the funeral?

Sporting fixtures cancelled?

Things like that, or will it all be business as usual with silences used as appropriate respect?

Will they do the funeral on a Saturday or will it be next working day?

I hope they announce soon, if it's a school day I want to make plans to do something with it.

I strongly suspect she died a number of hours ago and they wanted the family to get there before they announced it.

Yes my OH and I were saying this earlier, the family were trying to get to Balmoral and I found it odd as I said in my post that people were publishing all these messages which came across as tributes, seemed a bit odd if it either wasnt already the case or just about to be this afternoon

Hmm

It was just a knee-jerk reaction. I know the whole country won't actually be shut down.

This sets out the next 10 days according to the Guardian

How very very sad.

Antarcticant · 08/09/2022 18:56

Planet Rock is playing classical music. That's a first.

As she is in Scotland it will be Operation Unicorn not Operation London Bridge

I think it’s both

AlwaysGinPlease · 08/09/2022 18:58

@SaveWaterDrinkGin yes it was mentioned that she died this afternoon.

Having a bloody big ugly cry. She was an absolutely amazing woman.

My OH said that it would be timed at that time too, why are you doubting what the posters friend said?

It was incorrect. Not a case of doubting, it was inaccurate.

Diana's was a Saturday, but I did wonder if that was to avoid having to close everything.

I think she died this afternoon and the announcement was saved until it was clear when the family were all there and the right processes were in place to make the formal announcement, hence some people hearing (who were in the know) and knowing that it would be around 6ish. The announcement was dead on 6.30.

sparklecement · 08/09/2022 19:04

If the 10 day thing plays out as it should, her funeral will be a week on Sunday.

itsnotmeitsu · 08/09/2022 19:04

@latesummervibes 'according to my friend (and god knows where she gets her information from) there will be an announcement at 6pm' > Wow that's weird! I had a text from my son around 2pm saying crews were on standby for the death to be announced and that would happen at 6pm 😮Are your friend and my son the same person? Although he is, of course, male.

I’d say it was accurate at the time of telling but was postponed. A family member works in a well known cathedral and texted me about 5pm to say they’d been told she had died and to expect an announcement approx 6pm.

Exactly. This ‘insider knowledge’ that it would be broadcast at six was totally incorrect.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 08/09/2022 19:12

Half an hour is neither here nor there

Sluj · 08/09/2022 19:12

Just reading the Guardian article about what happens next. Poor old Charles is expected to hold meetings with various government officials and the archbishop etc tomorrow. That doesn't leave him any time for private sorrow - very harsh and difficult for him

steppon · 08/09/2022 19:13

I feel I should pay my respects but wonder how bad the crowds/queues would be.

steppon · 08/09/2022 19:13

I don't think it takes a genius to work out that she would have died before it was announced as all the cogs needs to be put in place

steppon · 08/09/2022 19:14

and it was pretty obvious when the BBC cancelled programmes that something was amiss.

QuebecBagnet · 08/09/2022 19:18

Daily Mail are saying the funeral will be Saturday 17th.

KosherDill · 08/09/2022 19:19

This is morbid but: Does the queen get embalmed? And if so - where? Would they do it in a room at Balmoral? Surely they couldn't remove her body to a public facility. Do they have rooms for this purpose at all of the castles?

I just hate to think about it.

TugboatAnnie · 08/09/2022 19:20

Poor old Charlie. 72 and starting a new job. No time for sadness, the eyes of the world watching.

Whiskers4 · 08/09/2022 19:21

People in the where reporting earlier the Queen had passed this afternoon. Comments followed that they'd wait until family together and announcement would be after 6pm.
