If the Queen passes what will happen?

Regardless of your view in the RF, the Queen has been a huge figure nationally and worldwide for a really long time, her death is going to have an impact.

In terms of immediate impact on ordinary members of the public what will happen?

A period of national mourning? What does that mean?

Schools closed? For the funeral?

Sporting fixtures cancelled?

Things like that, or will it all be business as usual with silences used as appropriate respect?

BTW - I read she was meant to have a horse running at Epsom this afternoon. Did that happen?

Big events on the day of the funeral will almost certainly be called off. There may be other cancellations in the period from announcement of death until after the funeral

demokitty · 08/09/2022 16:31

She looked okay in the photo of her and Liz Truss?!

Also it's not operation London Bridge unless she passes away when in England. If she passes at Balmoral it's operation Unicorn.

The main plan is London Bridge wherever it happens.

Unicorn is the add-on for if the death occurs in Scotland.

I’m supposed to be going to a dinner at my old uni- wonder whether that will be cancelled.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 08/09/2022 16:33

The telly will be fucked up for about 2 weeks. There will probably be a public holiday for the funeral, causing scheduling chaos if you work in the field of resource planning and/or annual leave calculation.

45% of mumsnet will declare that they are grieving, 45% will be grumpy about the disrupted schedules and declare we can't understand the grieving, 10% won't notice or will say things like "Who's died, sorry?" because knowing who popular culture figures are is too lowbrow.

emmathedilemma · 08/09/2022 16:34

I've also spent half the day trying to work this out. Most of the articles about Operation London Bridge / Unicorn focus on the formalities of her body and funeral arrangements. Other than the funeral being a national day of mourning (whatever that means) i can't really find much about what else will happen in terms of businesses, schools, sporting events etc. I think theatre and cinemas close or is it just the "royal" theatres?? I've been trying to work out if we should even have outdoor sports club tonight if she passes before then!

I understand through media contacts that she has died and it will be announced at 6pm today.

Yes she did, so when I first heard I had been hoping that though unwell she would not be in a critical condition. And part of me is clinging to tat hope.

But the switch to rolling news does not bode well

CanThisBe · 08/09/2022 16:36

Yes I'm due at a club training thing at 7pm. No idea if we should cancel if there's an announcement. If we do cancel do we cancel all sessions until after the funeral?

Yeah, I'm sure the royal household has 'media contacts' on speed dial and they'll announce it that way rather than through the natin broadcaster like they did for Prince Philip. 🤔

bellinisurge · 08/09/2022 16:37

I doubt there will be weeping and wailing like when Diana died. State funeral- bank holiday for that. Flags at half mast for a bit. Nice gravy train for various pundits. She doesn't strike me as a drama llama. Hopefully that will set the tone. Eventually, there'll be a coronation for Charles but not for a few months.
Hopefully we can now start talking about a)not having a monarchy anymore b) Irish reunification.

@CanThisBe I don't understand, why should you cancel your training?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 08/09/2022 16:37

National broadcaster.

I doubt Hugh Edwards would be blathering on on BBC1 right now if she had already died though?

I hope that MNHQ will decide early on to move all threads to the topic.

It's win/win - threads are all together for those who want to see them (whichever of the viewpoints they are) and easier to avoid (by hiding topic) if you dont, or if you just want a break for a while

Overtherainbow9 · 08/09/2022 16:39

I'm due to start night school at a local college in a hour. Wondering if it will still go ahead if there's an announcement imminent.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 08/09/2022 16:39

I really don’t see the need for all this padding. They should just leave off the re runs of Jubilee footage etc and wait for an announcement.

@bellinisurge doesn't the coronation have to happen PDQ for constitutional reasons? The Queen is dead, God save the King etc

bellinisurge · 08/09/2022 16:39

@CanThisBe , keep going as usual until told otherwise. Possible cancellation for one day if it coincides with her death. I'm sure she'd hate people stopping every single thing

This is a bit batshit. Why on Earth would your club training be cancelled, unless you're one of the Queen's immediate family? When the Queen dies, the news will be dominated by people repeating the same things over and over again, and a load of tributes. Very little else will be affected. Businesses can't afford to be closed again after the idiotic lockdowns. I'm neither pro nor anti Royal Family, btw.

He'll have to, or someone will have to, if they've decided to pull normal programming, but have nothing else to say until a formal announcement is made

bellinisurge · 08/09/2022 16:41

@BloodyHellKen . No. Once she dies, he immediately becomes King. No need to hurry it up. The coronation-anointing with oil and all that is Church of England stuff.

Kinneddar · 08/09/2022 16:42

No, Charles will be King immediately but his formal coronation could be a while. The Queens was over a year after her father died

CrystalBollocks · 08/09/2022 16:43

MrsMitford3 · 08/09/2022 16:34

I understand through media contacts that she has died and it will be announced at 6pm today.

These same media contacts presumably also gave you bollocks "advance info" about Covid, lockdowns, school closures etc, etc.

emmathedilemma · 08/09/2022 16:43

The long Guardian website says "Her eyes will be closed and Charles will be king. His siblings will kiss his hands." and also that "For a time, she will be gone without our knowing it."
Prince Andrew only arrived at Aberdeen airport about 4pm so I wonder if they need to wait for him to arrive before the above can happen. That would tie in with a 6pm announcement.

We've also had the debate about training tonight. I suspect most folk coming couldn't care less but i didn't want the general public to think we were being disrespectful.
