If the Queen passes what will happen?

Regardless of your view in the RF, the Queen has been a huge figure nationally and worldwide for a really long time, her death is going to have an impact.

In terms of immediate impact on ordinary members of the public what will happen?

A period of national mourning? What does that mean?

Schools closed? For the funeral?

Sporting fixtures cancelled?

Things like that, or will it all be business as usual with silences used as appropriate respect?

Doesn’t the new monarch have the option to have a new name? So it could be something other than King Charles. Wasn’t the Queen’s father called David but known as King George?

Everyone would still call him Charles even if he changed his name. We've known him as Charles for too long.

Same.

Do you?

Why would he be going at all if she's already gone?. He has no official role to play and the other GC don't appear to be there.

Possibly because he's the son of the next king?

I don't know, it's just a thought

I doubt Hugh Edwards would be blathering on on BBC1 right now if she had already died though?

Huw Edwards looks like someone’s died since I turned the tv on to watch Doctors about 2 o’clock…

Why would Harry need to be there? He has no constitutional significance and the other GC aren't there.

He is currently 6th in line, will be 5th which makes him of constitutional significance as one of the top 6 (or 7).
Also her grandson and she may well have wanted him there.

The Duke of Windsor was called David but became King Edward. His brother Albert became King George. There was also another brother called George!

@CanThisBe William is there! You have got to be joking.. Harry is her grandchild. Not even my own Dad's death was 'announced' on fb without his grandchildren knowing first.

No disrespect to the Queen but please @CanThisBe would you use the word 'die' and not 'passes'.

Has 'die' become such a terrible word that no one dare use it nowadays?

It seems that nobody speaks in plain English any more, preferring a softer euphemism.

sparklecement · 08/09/2022 18:06

I don't know where this announcement at 6 has come from. The news starts at 6. Day time TV was cancelled until 6. That's all. It's just for the normal news broadcasts.

Snowiscold · 08/09/2022 18:10

Yes, I’m baffled by the “announcement at 6” comments.

Made up by someone in here , no mention on news of a announcement until then I’ll take what I hear as pinch of salt .

I hope the rumours about a bank holiday are true.

Hugh Edwards was wearing black suit and tie today!

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 08/09/2022 18:15

I did, on fact, write Huw... it was autocorrected!

steppon · 08/09/2022 18:15

I understand through media contacts that she has died and it will be announced at 6pm today

it's 6:15 now...

cherrysthename · 08/09/2022 18:17

6pm, aye 👀

Huh? Pass has been used since the 1400s. (I just looked it up)

From a purely selfish point of view I hope there are quick announcements about what will and wont be cancelled. We're due to be celebrating a big wedding anniversary with a weekend in London and I'm not sure I want to go if the things we have booked get cancelled. Especially if the city is going to be full of crowds of mourners, though I guess that might not happen this weekend, since she's in Scotland.

MrsR87 · 08/09/2022 17:22

I wouldn’t be so sure of that. I was on a family holiday as a kid in England when princess Diana died and there was nothing to do, everything for tourists was closed.

That week from her death to the funeral was surreal.

It’s hard for people who weren’t around then to fully grasp that Diana was the most ubiquitous celebrity there has ever been. There can’t be anything close to her level of fame now due to the fragmented nature of the media today. All the focus was on her. For her to then die so suddenly stunned everyone.

Wishyfishy · 08/09/2022 18:21

It’ll be interesting won’t it? Completely unprecedented really because the last time the monarch died life was completely different.
I’m expecting life to go on unchanged for most of us really.

CanThisBe · 08/09/2022 18:21

Will freshers week have to be a subdued affair? From 19 Sep, next Monday....

I agree, but I think the death of the Queen is a much bigger event. I think there are lots of people who won't be particularly interested personally, but I think they're kidding themselves to think that life will be unaffected for a bit
