If the Queen passes what will happen?

CanThisBe · 08/09/2022 15:23

Regardless of your view in the RF, the Queen has been a huge figure nationally and worldwide for a really long time, her death is going to have an impact.

In terms of immediate impact on ordinary members of the public what will happen?

A period of national mourning? What does that mean?

Schools closed? For the funeral?

Sporting fixtures cancelled?

Things like that, or will it all be business as usual with silences used as appropriate respect?

Yes I'm due at a club training thing at 7pm. No idea if we should cancel if there's an announcement. If we do cancel do we cancel all sessions until after the funeral?

Wuh?!

Wearefoooked22 · 08/09/2022 17:13

A 2 minute silence at midday?..that’s it?

Well all news readers are wearing black! So it’s not looking good

The BBC one had a blue shirt and blue tie on!

I hope there aren't seas of flowers for her and that people will donate the same price of a bunch of flowers to charities the Queen is involved with. However I doubt they will because a bunch of flowers gets more social media likes than a fiver to Cancer Research.

The long Guardian website says "Her eyes will be closed and Charles will be king. His siblings will kiss his hands." and also that "For a time, she will be gone without our knowing it."
Prince Andrew only arrived at Aberdeen airport about 4pm so I wonder if they need to wait for him to arrive before the above can happen. That would tie in with a 6pm announcement.

We've also had the debate about training tonight. I suspect most folk coming couldn't care less but i didn't want the general public to think we were being disrespectful.

She has probably almost definitely already died then hasn't she?

It makes sense I guess - a BBC BREAKING headline that she has died at like 1pm with zero preparation would be almost inappropriate wouldn't it?

mmmflakycrust81 · 08/09/2022 15:40

no of course not!

Things like events at royal parks will cancel, theatres will dim lights and play the national anthem, tv scheduling will change. Everything else will continue as normal.

I wouldn’t be so sure of that. I was on a family holiday as a kid in England when princess Diana died and there was nothing to do, everything for tourists was closed.

KassandraOfSparta · 08/09/2022 17:22

Monkeybutt1 · 08/09/2022 15:42

As she is in Scotland it will be Operation Unicorn not Operation London Bridge

Exactly this.

Twilightstarbright · 08/09/2022 17:24

I suspect certain government buildings and palaces will be closed (to tourists). I can’t see Tesco, Asda etc closing for 10 days.

Crazykatie · 08/09/2022 15:54

If it happens it will be
The Queen is dead
Long live the King

flags at half mast and official mourning
nothing much else before the funeral it won’t affect everyday life.

Then the Coronation of King Charles 111 some time in the future

George VII

Kindofcrunchy · 08/09/2022 17:31

I'm wondering if royal mail will use it as an excuse not to deliver anything ever again tbh

Greyarea12 · 08/09/2022 17:34

Harry hasn't arrived yet, struggeling to see how there would be an announcement at 6pm with him not even there yet.

Why would Harry need to be there? He has no constitutional significance and the other GC aren't there.

He’s her grandson.
It would be awkward for him to be photographed arriving when the announcement has already been made.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 08/09/2022 16:33

The telly will be fucked up for about 2 weeks. There will probably be a public holiday for the funeral, causing scheduling chaos if you work in the field of resource planning and/or annual leave calculation.

45% of mumsnet will declare that they are grieving, 45% will be grumpy about the disrupted schedules and declare we can't understand the grieving, 10% won't notice or will say things like "Who's died, sorry?" because knowing who popular culture figures are is too lowbrow.

You forgot the % that will claim it's Meghan's fault that the 96 year old
woman died.

It's sad whether a royalist or not, she has had dedicated her life to
the job and and seem some incredible worldwide changes.

Mydoghealsmyheart · 08/09/2022 17:38

Doesn’t the new monarch have the option to have a new name? So it could be something other than King Charles. Wasn’t the Queen’s father called David but known as King George?

Pigeonpair1 · 08/09/2022 17:39

Apparently she had a fall last night .....
Sadly I think she has already gone :0(

Why would he be going at all if she's already gone?. He has no official role to play and the other GC don't appear to be there.

I don't know about ITN and Sky but the BBC could do with taking a break for a wee while. They won't but Nicholas Witchell et al have long since exhausted their supply of plaudits and platitudes.

I'm not saying it's necessary or a good thing, I'm just wondering what might happen and how my life might be affected in the next few days/weeks

Fair enough - I was sidetracked by a deep loathing of being told how to feel/behave which was made much worse by lockdown!

My guess is that ordinary life will barely be affected at all, other than people who watch TV (I don't) will have an endless diet of programmes about HM.

Thomasina79 · 08/09/2022 17:41

Well don’t watch the telly then!

Yes, they can choose their royal name. Queen's dad was Albert.

pompomseverywhere · 08/09/2022 17:47

Also they'll want the close family contained as it'll be easier for security to manage everyone in one place.

People en route will get mobbed once there's been an announcement

FourChimneys · 08/09/2022 17:49

I hope there won't be endless seas of flowers in plastic wrapping everywhere. It's a completely pointless and environmentally damaging thing to do.

Surely if anyone wants to show some respect they should donate to a charity or plant something which will live rather than shrivel.

That's understandable, bearing in mind the fucking RHS was closed last year and people chucked out in the middle of the day because of Phillip dying. I too think it would be batshit, but seeing something as ridiculous doesn't mean it won't happen. Logic doesn't necessarily come into these things.

The Duke of Windsor was David, not Queen's father
