If the Queen passes what will happen?

Regardless of your view in the RF, the Queen has been a huge figure nationally and worldwide for a really long time, her death is going to have an impact.

In terms of immediate impact on ordinary members of the public what will happen?

A period of national mourning? What does that mean?

Schools closed? For the funeral?

Sporting fixtures cancelled?

Things like that, or will it all be business as usual with silences used as appropriate respect?

This is a bit batshit. Why on Earth would your club training be cancelled, unless you're one of the Queen's immediate family? When the Queen dies, the news will be dominated by people repeating the same things over and over again, and a load of tributes. Very little else will be affected. Businesses can't afford to be closed again after the idiotic lockdowns. I'm neither pro nor anti Royal Family, btw.

I just wondered if some sort of mark of respect would be expected. I imagine some events will be cancelled.

@BloodyHellKen . No. Once she dies, he immediately becomes King. No need to hurry it up. The coronation-anointing with oil and all that is Church of England stuff.

@bellinisurge I didn't realise that thank you - I think I've seen too many historical films as a child which show a monarch being crown immediately after a death. Just googled it and apparently there is usually about a year before the official coronation!!

ItsAlwaysThere · 08/09/2022 16:44

I feel really uneasy about it. Like things are uncertain, they are already but it feels moreso.

I'm sorry but wtaf? Cancel ''training sessions''?

There hasn't been an announcement!

The long Guardian website says "Her eyes will be closed and Charles will be king. His siblings will kiss his hands." and also that "For a time, she will be gone without our knowing it."
Prince Andrew only arrived at Aberdeen airport about 4pm so I wonder if they need to wait for him to arrive before the above can happen. That would tie in with a 6pm announcement.

We've also had the debate about training tonight. I suspect most folk coming couldn't care less but i didn't want the general public to think we were being disrespectful.

Harry hasn’t arrived yet either.

doesn't the coronation have to happen PDQ for constitutional reasons? The Queen is dead, God save the King etc

No, Charles will be King immediately but his formal coronation could be a while. The Queens was over a year after her father died

That proclamation is made by the Lord Chancellor as confirmation of the transfer of power.

The actual coronation is arranged as and when.

Parliament goes in to recess between death and funeral (formal mourning) except one day for tributes to the monarch just passed and allegiance to the new

Nidan2Sandan · 08/09/2022 16:48

Nobody needs to cancel anything, the country wont grind to a standstill if she has died.

cicatrix1 · 08/09/2022 16:51

I thought everything was in place years ago for when she died ?

flowerdaisy4 · 08/09/2022 16:51

What on earth are you going on about?

The monarchy is pretty much irrelevant to this country anyway, much as those in power would love us to believe otherwise.

It's a distraction. Get real.

All this "mark of respect" stuff is meaningless. The same people who are pious about "marks of respect" are also those who were reporting their neighbours for sitting on benches during Covid (I don't mean you, @CanThisBe!) It's a weird mixture of sanctimony and trying to shame other people into toeing the line and expressing the feelings/sentiments that they are "supposed" to feel on the death of someone who has done her job well but whom they have never met and don't personally care about.

CanThisBe · 08/09/2022 16:57

Whether you think the monarcy is irrelevant or not, there will be an impact. Definitely big events will be cancelled, I'm just pondering how far down that might filter.

I'm not saying it's necessary or a good thing, I'm just wondering what might happen and how my life might be affected in the next few days/weeks

All the other sad and tragic events will continue to happen and we will be allowed to grieve for our loved ones.

ifonly4 · 08/09/2022 17:00

If Operation Unicorn happens, then Edinburgh will be a nightmare next week - students (many with parents) are due to return in next few days for freshers week. Very sad, but I guess life will move on.

bellinisurge · 08/09/2022 17:03

@flowerdaisy4 , unfortunately, government functions only with a monarch in place. That's how all our laws work. I agree it's increasingly irrelevant. We need a discussion about having a constitutional monarchy or a republic. We will hopefully start that conversation when she dies.
Ireland, Germany, India and Israel all have an elected non-executive President. We should have one.

I agree, even though I know the Queen is at an advanced age, etc.

MsMiaWallace · 08/09/2022 17:04

It is a very strange time isn't it ?

WildRosie · 08/09/2022 17:04

Unicorn for HM passing in Scotland and London Bridge for England. Not wishing to sound flippant but it's a good job the Queen isn't currently elsewhere in the Union.

Many journalists are saying today that Balmoral is her favourite home. I always thought it was Windsor Castle. Perhaps not.

nice bit of mansplaining going on there hon I hadn't dreamed of this, only having been here only sixty years living in this country...good job you explained it to me...

Ostryga · 08/09/2022 17:09

In defence of pp I know someone high up in the army that also said the same. That the queen passed at 1pm today and an announcement at 6pm.

Ostryga · 08/09/2022 17:09

But obviously that could be bollocks!

thebabessavedme · 08/09/2022 17:10

The only thing I can say with certainty is that fucking Nicolas Whitchall is going to be on the bloody tv on 24 hours loops being his usual oily self.

AuntieStella · 08/09/2022 16:41

He'll have to, or someone will have to, if they've decided to pull normal programming, but have nothing else to say until a formal announcement is made

Although they have just cut to one of the news readers, he isn’t in a black tie yet.

That isn’t a mistake they’d make again after Diana’s death.

Acreativeusername · 08/09/2022 17:11

Well all news readers are wearing black! So it’s not looking good
