Going to be moving into my car

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 14:53

So the order has come. I have six weeks to be out of the house.
Been trying to find somewhere to rent since I was first told my tenant would not be renewed in March.
Nothing!
Properties going for more than twice what I'm paying now.
I live alone, self employed and have cancer. My income doesn't now meet the minimum threshold for a tenancy.
Council will only offer a bedsit - so I would be able to keep my dogs. Have already given up my other animals.

So I'm a few weeks my dogs and I will move into my car ☹️

Understandable about the garden.

How about this? It says 'pets considered' and nearer your search area.

Still too far away sadly. My search area is the opposite side of the moor and although it doesn't look far it takes a long time to get either over or around the moors.

Any good?

SheilaWilde · 03/09/2022 16:23

Yes, sorry I'm probably getting carried away. This one seems nearer your search area and massive garden!

Although I'm a bit far from the mark that is absolutely miles away from OPs search area.

longestlurkerever · 03/09/2022 16:25

Might there be any live in carer jobs around?

SheilaWilde · 03/09/2022 16:26

Ahh! Last one I linked to has an Agricultural Restriction.

This would be fantastic and has been available for months but unfortunately it's got an agricultural tie on it which means only someone working in forestry or agriculture full time can live there!

I don't do live in care. I'm self employed and have pets and cancer. I also have a full book of clients.

Bit outside the box but can you get hold of an old caravan, campervan, yurt or Bell tent. Any communities that you cam be part of or some land you couod borrow. Would be far better than living in a car

Will consider pets and in your search area. Garden and two beds (the dogs might have to share 😁).

House sitting

Thanks I applied for that one yesterday.

How on earth can OP pet/house sit? She has two dogs of her own.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 16:33

@Issummeroveralready I already have a full diary of care clients and I have two dogs myself. So neither option is really viable I'm afraid.

OP, you NEED to contact Macmillan. They can help you.

www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/09/2022 16:37

OP you need to talk to McMillan, Shelter, the local charities that are attached to the hospital and also CAB who can help you talk to the LA.

No one is going to want you living in your car, but you need to take your search for a solution outside counsel bidding.

People can’t help if they don’t know.

SheilaWilde · 03/09/2022 16:38

Good luck for the Bovey Tracey one, it looks lovely. I'll keep looking.

Bunnyfuller · 03/09/2022 16:40

There’s a couple in kingsteignton?

@Issummeroveralready

What the OP needs to do is contact MacMillan, the hospital social work team and her GP. No one wants a cancer patient living in a car or a tent.

OP seriously - crack on an escalate this on Monday.

Perfect28 · 03/09/2022 16:42

I'm confused, Exeter is north east not south east. Have you tried spare room? 1000pcm is a healthy budget.

Issummeroveralready · 03/09/2022 16:44

Perhaps she doesn't want to. Everyone is different.

I'm not just looking at council options!!!
I'm mainly looking for private rentals!
Shelter never answer the phone.
MacMillan can't help - they don't have any accommodation. They just sign post back to shelter.
I have been looking since March. I literally have looked at every option!

You cannot live in your car with dogs op. Where will the dogs go while you are in work or at hospital appointments? They could be stolen from your car or concerned passers by might call the police.

Are you bidding through Devon home choice? They sometimes have flats that you can get straight into without having to bid based on individual need. Ignore anything about pet restrictions for now. Animal shelters will sometimes foster animals for owners facing homelessness, or posting on your local fb page might turn up some solutions.

I understand you don't want your dogs in kennels, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I had to leave my dog in a shelter for 3 months in a different country while I fled an abusive relationship. I got him back in the end 🙂

PriamFarrl · 03/09/2022 16:49

Have you tried the Salvation Army? I’m a dyed in the wool atheist but they are good people and will help you.

Also I understood that the rules had changed and landlords weren’t allowed to say no pets anymore. As for council houses and pets, I’m not a council tenant but many of my neighbours are. All of them have pets, 3 have dogs.
