Going to be moving into my car

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 14:53

So the order has come. I have six weeks to be out of the house.
Been trying to find somewhere to rent since I was first told my tenant would not be renewed in March.
Nothing!
Properties going for more than twice what I'm paying now.
I live alone, self employed and have cancer. My income doesn't now meet the minimum threshold for a tenancy.
Council will only offer a bedsit - so I would be able to keep my dogs. Have already given up my other animals.

So I'm a few weeks my dogs and I will move into my car ☹️

It makes me cross that in this country there is only one way to live - in a brick built house - and work betide you if you can't afford that. At least in America you could get yourself a van and actually live in it, legally, as per that film 'Nomad'. But oh no, not allowed here.

Sorry I don't have any answers, but @Bemyclementine seems to know what's what, so I'd take her advice.

CroccyWoccy · 03/09/2022 15:40

I’d also suggest ignoring the “no pet” directives on council housing.

Rainbowcat99 · 03/09/2022 15:40

I'm so sorry you're going through this, it sounds incredibly stressful.
There's some good suggestions on here. If you get ill enough to need a hospital admission (likely if you have cancer and are living in your car) what will happen to the dogs then?
I wonder if any pets groups in Next door or Facebook would help you find a private foster situation for them where you could visit and walk them until you're back on your feet?
Also, if you haven't already, ask the team responsible for your cancer treatment for help. They might be able to support your application to get moved higher up the housing list or point you in the direction of a charity that can help you.

amylou8 · 03/09/2022 15:45

Sorry you're in this situation. I rent, am self employed, and would be in your position if my landlord gave me notice. Rental property is so scarce at the moment. Have you been evicted or is it that your notice period is up? If you've not actually been evicted then I believe the advice is to stay put until you are.

SheilaWilde · 03/09/2022 15:46

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I'm glad you've decided to bid on a bed sit, why aren't you allowed to bid on one beds? I'd also keep quiet about the dogs.

JohnsShirt · 03/09/2022 15:49

Clarice99 · 03/09/2022 15:32

I also work in LA housing and I've never seen a tenant evicted for having a pet either, so that's 2 of us on this thread.

Your dogs are your emotional support, more than ever now that you have cancer, so get bidding and keep quiet about the dogs.

I had four cats, was only supposed to have two, they didn't care so long as they weren't bothering anyone else.
*I actually had nine at one point but that's another story for another time and five were asleep in the cupboard when HA visited!

SheilaWilde · 03/09/2022 15:49

Would you give a rough idea of the part of Devon you're looking in and rough budget? If you could afford to rent privately. There might be people on here that might be able to help.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 15:54

South east Dartmoor area toward Exeter. £1000 a month.
Absolutely everything that accepts pets on the market today I have applied for.

My friend was homeless and she went into temporary accommodation.

1.5yearsvshe was there. A top floor flat. No pets. The whole flats were people in same situation.

She had her dog. Not 1 person grassed her up ever. She just didn't have them there during checks.

mathanxiety · 03/09/2022 16:01

You need to talk to the social workers at the hospital where you're doing the treatment/ clinical trial.

They may be able to help you find accommodation.

The hospital may also be able to certify that you need the dog as an emotional support animal because of your diagnosis.

Talk to the hospital asap.

Bid for the bedsit.

In Cornwall until the section 21 is finished you will not be a priority on housing.Emergency housing in Cornwall is now a Travel Lodge can be anywhere not even in Cornwall you then wait another period of time and go to a higher band. After that you wait and you may or maybe not be lucky this could be years of bidding. There are no cooking facilities in the Travel Lodges so you would need to eat out or live on Cup a Soup. There are endless families in this position throughout Cornwall. All pets are rehomed there is no choice. The situation is dire.I suggest you contact the council when you are evicted and they will offer you emergency accommodation but the dogs are another problem.Sleeping n your car is going to be a terrible way to live.I am so sorry.

Babyroobs · 03/09/2022 16:05

How old are you op? There often seems to be more chance of finding over 55's accomodation.

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 03/09/2022 16:06

Could you ask on local FB pages about a caravan rent or if someone has land you could put a cheap caravan on? Just an idea.

sorry you are facing the awful situation of being homeless especially when you are ill.

Decidualcast · 03/09/2022 16:07

I recall your thread. I have nothing useful to add except to say I’m so sorry you are faced with this and how disgusted I am with a system that allows this. This country is so broken. Wishing you peace.

Bagpuss2022 · 03/09/2022 16:08

This makes me so sad OP what has this country come to I would offer you a room if I was local and would accept your pets.
don’t really have any suggestions but my thoughts are with you

This might be a bit far out but it looks lovely and allows pets.

I've done that several times but nothing yet.

Too far away sadly. And I really do need a garden if I'm paying that amount of money.

If the rent is lower and it has no garden worst case I will pay to use private dog fields.

Can you trade the car for an old campervan or something? That would be more comfortable for you and your pets. Or can you rent a garage someplace "to park ypur caravan" and buy an old caravan and illegally live there?

courgettigreensadwater · 03/09/2022 16:14

PangolinPie · 03/09/2022 15:36

Could you rent a static caravan on a longer term basis?

This is a good shout especially in Devon at the end of tourist season. If I had one I would rent it to you as I'm in Devon. Air B N B do longer term lets as well.

I wouldn't want to trade car in as it's decent and reliable. I need a reliable vehicle for work as I am a carer. I also need something I can reliably park as many of my clients like on narrow streets etc.
a camper-van or caravan would work if I could find somewhere to park it.

@PangolinPie &@courgettigreensadwater I am looking for that option atm. But they have all wanted £600+ a week so far!

Understandable about the garden.

How about this? It says 'pets considered' and nearer your search area.

MockneyReject · 03/09/2022 16:18

I visit a lot of LA schemes, as a home carer. They're all advertised as 'no pets', but the actual rule is that tenants can move in with pets they currently have. They're just not supposed to get new ones.
These are mostly 'over 55' blocks, but are increasingly offered to under 55s.
When I was bidding, 2 years ago, they came up fairly frequently (Dorset).
