Going to be moving into my car

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 14:53

So the order has come. I have six weeks to be out of the house.
Been trying to find somewhere to rent since I was first told my tenant would not be renewed in March.
Nothing!
Properties going for more than twice what I'm paying now.
I live alone, self employed and have cancer. My income doesn't now meet the minimum threshold for a tenancy.
Council will only offer a bedsit - so I would be able to keep my dogs. Have already given up my other animals.

So I'm a few weeks my dogs and I will move into my car ☹️

This is insane. I’ve RTFT and I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would choose living in a CAR over somewhere with a garden because “I need a garden if I’m paying that much”. I get that OP wants to be able to walk her dogs but the alternative is living in a fucking car!!! This is completely nonsensical.

What she is saying is that if she has no garden (or has to live in her car), she can afford to rent private dog fields for her dog. If the rent is high with no outside space, she won't be able to afford that.

Not sure what's so complicated about it?

But what was the point of the thread?

because every suggestion was discounted, even very sensible ones

The point it seems was to say ‘this is shit for me and I need people to
know and I’m no prepared to
be dissuaded’

all these well meaning posters offering ideas….just wasting their time. Im
back to
asking what the point was?

Maybe she just wanted to talk about it. Sometimes a listening ear is all we need to help. Still, I'm sure loads of people telling her what a terrible person she is and/or failing to read her posts will have put her off ever doing that again 👍

Hi OP

sorry about your situation and the meanness you’ve faced on this thread

above is excellent advice - I’ve worked in homelessness services and I’d 100% advise you to do the above

goos luck

Hi Op,

I’m sorry you’re in such a shitty situation but please read the above.
stay in the property right till the bailiffs are due to enter. This is when the Council have a duty to house you.

Keep holding on there Op, please do what the above poster advised.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 04/09/2022 14:34

Sorry my link wasn’t clear . Please read this

I haven’t RTFT so apologies if I’m repeating - I used to work in housing both for a council and a HA.

Dont move out until the bailiffs arrive, let it go to court, don’t move.

Keep bidding on properties, and when the bailiffs to evict you present to the council as homeless - your priority will increase and they have a duty to house you. It may be a b&b temporarily but if you can’t take the dogs In use the facilities and sleep in your car with them. You were planning to anyway, and it will be short term.

The council will find you housing, if it says no pets ignore it - never did we evict for people having pets even though they weren’t supposed to without a pet contract.

You will come through this and find somewhere, I wish you the best x

I'm fortunate enough not to be in the OPs position. What I do know is that my three dogs would be happy living in a mansion, in a car or riding the buses all day. Their home is me, their world is me. Not because I'm awesome, but because that's how dogs are. They'd probably be especially happy in a car because they could constantly be smooshed up against me. I hope the OP gets a nice home sorted, but I don't believe for one minute that the dogs would be unhappy or that she is cruel to keep them should she end up in a car at some point.

We're heading towards Winter. The dogs will be extremely cold in the car and cramped.

A dog feeling happy because they're with their owner, and a dog being kept in awfully unsuitable conditions are 2 very different things.

Exactly 👍 MN can be so nasty . Sometimes all someone wants to hear is "we understand and we are thinking of you". Not full on attack .

Softplayhooray · 04/09/2022 17:36

Just wanted to offer my sympathies OP that you are in a shit situation that noone in a developed country should ever even have to think about especially when you are being treated for cancer. Its a travesty anyone is in this situation. Just wanted to offer solidarity and sympathy and to say please ignore any nasty posters. Your dogs are family, that's totally understood and I can totally get why you don't want to leave them.

Delatron · 04/09/2022 18:04

I really don’t want the OP to end up in her car but I understand the sentiment of not wanting to be parted from her dogs. The dogs want her. Some dogs live outside in kennels in much colder countries. They have fur coats. My dog loves winter and really struggles in Summer.

If you do end up in this situation- hopefully it will be just for a few weeks whilst the weather is still
mild - and being homeless should bump you up the priority list. Don’t want to add to all the suggestions that have already been made but I hope find a solution soon. I personally would smuggle the dogs in somewhere that didn’t allow them but that’s an individual choice.

Delatron · 04/09/2022 18:09

Going back to the OP - do we know why she has to move out? ‘The order has come’ what from the council?

I agree with the poster who said wait until the bailiffs arrive. Squatter’s rights? Is that still a thing. I thought it was very hard to evict people… I wouldn’t go easily.

CornishTiger · 04/09/2022 18:32

I think her section 21 has ended and possession order has now been granted by the courts. There will be a period between now and baliff date. If she leaves before baliff date she’ll be seen as intentionally homeless by council.

purdypuma · 04/09/2022 18:50

Hi ask your local council if they can refer you to a supported tenancy provider where the expectation would be that you engage with them on a regular basis. These are normally time limited services of up to 2 years but the properties are normally bigger than a bedsit. Make them aware of your pets & their temperament Most social landlords will accept pets provided they are made aware. Worst case scenario would be that they request that the reactive dog is shut in another room for when they visit or for when contractors need to attend. If its a service funded by a local authority then your banding to bid may be upgraded.

Because someone just wanted to talk? It's not bloody Eastenders. Most suggestions were offered in kindness because it's nice to be kind and helpful. It's not nice to be critical and mean. I would like to hope that if you found yourself in the same situation you would find some kindness. Wouldn't you hope for the same for someone else?

Maltester71 · 05/09/2022 21:24

I think I’d type looking for advice and then maybe accept the advice to be fair

user1471538283 · 05/09/2022 21:40

Could you get in touch with your MP and cancer charities to help you? It will be so cold in your car and your health might not cope with it.

Chakraleaf · 06/09/2022 20:33

I hope your MP isn't the same as mine. I wouldn't expect her to help!

This is terrible advice, or it would be round here. I deliver hot food to families of four who live in council provided emergency accommodation of one room between them in a bed and breakfast with no cooking facilities and who have lived in this sorry state since the start of covid. So for two miserable years. The accommodation provided for single people with or without dogs is truly shocking.

@Dobbysgotthesocks Definitely appeal your band/points. Did you apply for medical points? They would make all the difference.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 07/09/2022 01:11

It's possible to rent caravans or park homes with dogs. There must be a lot of empty caravans in Devon in winter. Ask on local Facebook pages.

Summerslam · 07/09/2022 17:59

I hope you have found a solution to your imminent homelessness, OP, it's been preying on my mind, the thought of the colder weather coming and you and your dogs with just your car for a home.
