Going to be moving into my car

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 14:53

So the order has come. I have six weeks to be out of the house.
Been trying to find somewhere to rent since I was first told my tenant would not be renewed in March.
Nothing!
Properties going for more than twice what I'm paying now.
I live alone, self employed and have cancer. My income doesn't now meet the minimum threshold for a tenancy.
Council will only offer a bedsit - so I would be able to keep my dogs. Have already given up my other animals.

So I'm a few weeks my dogs and I will move into my car ☹️

Not sure how rentals sure in the Uk? But, when you put in a bid for a rental, can you up the monthly rent ie; they ask for £850, you off £900.
We rented in Oz and were desperate at one point, so upped our monthly rental offer.
I hope you don’t end up in your car, and you find somewhere for you and your dogs.

Bid for a bedsit, don't mention the dogs. I am a LA housing officer and really wish people were less honest about having a dog, when they are almost homeless and want to turn down a property tgat doesn't allow pets. I've never seen a social housing tenant evicted fir having a pet.

@Bemyclementine I live in a Housing Association place that I'm not allowed pets in, my housing officer did an inspection after a year of me living here, spotted the cat food and litter tray and said absolutely nothing.

Junepassing · 03/09/2022 17:32

Sorry if this has been suggested already, but it might be worth asking on your local community facebook pages, I've seen people do this on ours with a photo of them and their pets explaining their situation and that they are struggling and private landlords have come forward to say that they have a private renal not on the market yet, unlikely but worth a try xx

ladydoris · 03/09/2022 17:32

Just hand hold. Hoping that you will get a house for you and your dog before it gets cold.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 03/09/2022 17:32

OP are you able to go to a mid Devon such as Crediton? Is that too far? There’s a letting agent that always allows pets and I believe they may have something available but I don’t know the price

Nocutenamesleft · 03/09/2022 17:32

You’ll need to wait until your homeless regarding the bidding situation

contact shelter. They are amazing for info. They will tell you everything you need to know

i can help regarding the section 21 and making sure it’s legal if you’d like? .

gnilliwdog · 03/09/2022 17:34

Is it worth looking on Diggers and Dreamers for any communities that might let you stay?

KassandraOfSparta · 03/09/2022 17:36

Come on OP. It is seriously not rational to say your dogs are more important than your own health. That needs to change.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 03/09/2022 17:36

Do the council know about your health situation? Have you asked for a letter from your doctor because you can get the council to bump you up the list to B band from D band.
Obviously you must stay put otherwise you are intentionally homeless and they can’t help you at all then.
I was just in this situation, we did manage to find a rental (rent takes all of our money now) are you on any benefits at the moment as you may be entitled to help with rent especially as rentals have increased so much lately.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 03/09/2022 17:37

OhMerde · 03/09/2022 17:17

In your situation, I would apply for properties that don't allow dogs. I'd quite simply hide the dogs and then just move them in. Once you're in, you're in. Most landlords are just worried about damage/smells/barking/poo etc. If you're a good tenant who pays on time and doesn't let the dogs wreck the house, then most LLs won't care so much.
I get reactive dogs op. They're really difficult. Took me years to understand their needs, so just ignore anyone who doesn't get it.

It's all very well saying YOU understand and all these nasty people just don't understand, but what's going to happen to the dogs if the op ends up in hospital??? She's on chemo, living in a bloody car isn't going to help her health any?

Many of us 'get' reactive dogs, but you know, life... you have to deal with the actual situation, not just sit around hoping for the ideal thing to happen,

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 17:38

For the absolute final time I am not being parted with the dogs!!! So please stop suggesting it!!!

Hope you get something sorted asap. Had a quick look on The Lady magazine, there are live in carer jobs advertised. Good luck.

Summerslam · 03/09/2022 17:39

I wish I could offer you accommodation OP, to both you and your dogs, but geographically, I'm hundreds of miles away.

There must be someone who reads Mumsnet with an empty static caravan or spare room or two, in your area, that could offer temporary help while you get something more permanent sorted out.

It's going to be bitterly cold soon, I really feel for you and wish I could help in some practical way.

@TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination actually you don't understand! You know nothing of my Heath beyond that I have cancer. You don't know what treatments I'm on.
You also don't know my dog. Or her needs. Or how traumatised she is.
So please stop making statements that you don't know are true

But what would you do if your full book of clients wouldn't/couldn't all you to bring your animals into their homes?

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 17:44

@MaryHoldTheCandleSteadyWhileIShaveTheChickensLeg
They don't come into their homes now 🙄

With the current cost of living crisis I’ll put money on you being able to go in as a lodger with someone with your dogs. Get it out on Facebook, Twitter, everywhere. Your ‘landlord’ will have a steady extra income and you will be house. I think many of us need to look at sharing tbh. Hope you find somewhere OP

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 17:45

And being self employed I decide which clients I take on and which I don't. My work life fits around my dogs really well.

If you are going to force your dogs to live in a car you are cruel. I rescue dogs so please don’t think I’m saying it flippantly, but you need to think whether the reactive one has any quality of life. What if something happens to you? If you can’t afford a home you can’t afford the behaviourist support required for the dog. Sometimes we need our pets more than they need us.

@Dobbysgotthesocks You cannot care for her properly in a car and she would suffer without you. If you can't find suitable accommodation then you have no choice. It's not fair on your dog, as you said yourself for her to be separated from you and kennelled.

She's already said she can't live with anyone else. Everything everyone is suggesting there is a reason why it isn't suitable.
