Going to be moving into my car

So the order has come. I have six weeks to be out of the house.
Been trying to find somewhere to rent since I was first told my tenant would not be renewed in March.
Nothing!
Properties going for more than twice what I'm paying now.
I live alone, self employed and have cancer. My income doesn't now meet the minimum threshold for a tenancy.
Council will only offer a bedsit - so I would be able to keep my dogs. Have already given up my other animals.

So I'm a few weeks my dogs and I will move into my car ☹️

Op have you tried joining Facebook groups you are looking in and asking there, people on there who have something better than your car available that they aren't advertising. There are groups for Bovey Tracey, The Teign Valley and one called Acts of Kindness which covers the Torbay area.

wellhelloitsme · 03/09/2022 16:50

Macmillan, Shelter, Local churches (even if you aren't religious) could honestly be of help OP. Are you able to spend any time next week getting in touch with them, even if just Macmillan as priority?

You cannot live in your car with dogs op. Where will the dogs go while you are in work or at hospital appointments? They could be stolen from your car or concerned passers by might call the police.

Are you bidding through Devon home choice? They sometimes have flats that you can get straight into without having to bid based on individual need. Ignore anything about pet restrictions for now. Animal shelters will sometimes foster animals for owners facing homelessness, or posting on your local fb page might turn up some solutions.

I understand you don't want your dogs in kennels, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I had to leave my dog in a shelter for 3 months in a different country while I fled an abusive relationship. I got him back in the end 🙂

The dogs already come with me to work. They have a secure space in the car. So I'm not worried about that. Hospital appointments I will have to work out but ultimately they would have to come too.
The reactive dog absolutely cannot go into kennels. She was badly traumatised in kennels and she will never go back.

Could you ask on local FB pages about a caravan rent or if someone has land you could put a cheap caravan on? Just an idea.

sorry you are facing the awful situation of being homeless especially when you are ill.

I was thinking the same thing. There's an old 1990s caravan appeared along the street, on the road, people in and out. I think likely a family who know the people in the house it's parked outside. Noone around here would say anything (I hope not anyway). I'd much rather see that, than anyone lose their dogs or end up homeless.

Meanwhile good luck with the bedsits, don't mention the dogs seems to be the advice.

Sorry you are in this position.

Yep I have done that. Several times

MacMillan can't help. They just signpost to shelter who don't answer the phone!

Have you tried the Salvation Army? I’m a dyed in the wool atheist but they are good people and will help you.

Also I understood that the rules had changed and landlords weren’t allowed to say no pets anymore. As for council houses and pets, I’m not a council tenant but many of my neighbours are. All of them have pets, 3 have dogs.

Landlords can still say no to pets sadly. The idea was rejected.

South east Dartmoor area toward Exeter. £1000 a month.
Absolutely everything that accepts pets on the market today I have applied for.

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/Dartmoor.html#prop92212997

There seem to be lots under £1000 pcm

Sorry cross posted re Macmillan OP, ignore me Flowers

Paq · 03/09/2022 16:57

Have you considered house shares/lodging?

I'm sorry for your circumstances, it's awful in the south west at the moment.

No. I can't. One of my dogs is reactive and wouldn't settle with someone else in the house. I'm also autistic and can't have people in my space. I need my own space.
Living in the car would actually be preferable to house sharing for me. When I need space I can't handle people.

Could a dog fostering charity perhaps help in the short term?

cinnamon.org.uk/cinnamon-trust/

A national fostering service is provided for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital – volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited.
When a pet is in the Trust’s care either short term or long term because the owner is in care, the owner is kept in touch with visits, if possible, or regular photos and letters.

KassandraOfSparta · 03/09/2022 17:00

You would seriously live in a car rather than give up animals? OK then.

Please read previous posts. The dog is reactive she won't cope! It will be a big enough transition for her as it is. Take me out of the equation and she will meltdown.

Have you asked on fb about a van? Or big tent? I would stay put until you hear back because it would take a few more weeks for the. To evict you xx

Yes, many people would. Including me.

My dog is like my daughter. You'll laugh at that I'm guessing (and yes, I have real kids).
I love her with all my heart and would 100% rather live in my car than abandon her.

I get it OP, dogs are family.

mamabear715 · 03/09/2022 17:04

@Dobbysgotthesocks I wish you all the luck in the world finding somewhere for you AND doggies. Of course you can't kennel her, people PLEASE RTFT & OP's comments BEFORE posting.. sigh..

I'm not sure if showing you houses is at all helpful, OP, but many hands, so:

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/125511359#/?channel=RES_LET Doesn't mention pets at all, but clearly eager for a tenant.

I find some of the no-pet properties baffling. Newly recarpeted flat near Exeter? Totally understand. Big property in the middle of nowhere, like this www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/126548870#/?channel=RES_LET ? This is the sort of house that screams for a dog or at least a cat.

Too far away sadly. And I really do need a garden if I'm paying that amount of money.

If the rent is lower and it has no garden worst case I will pay to use private dog fields.

I mean this in the kindest possible way OP, but I think you need to reconsider your options.

I used to live in Ivybridge so know that part of the country well.

You are considering living with your two dogs in a car in the winter. That's no life for your dogs. A house without a garden would be far preferable to your dogs living in a car. You're in a part of the country which has an incredible amount of outside space - a garden is very convenient but not absolutely essential given the situation you find yourself in.

Same with the distance. I know how long it takes to travel around the roads around the moors. I used to love walking the moors and spent a lot of my time out there. This distance would be doable, even if not ideal. Surely better than living in your car?? Would buy you time to look for somewhere more suitable.

I'm really sorry you're in such a rotten situation, and I wish you all the best.

The first one I have applied for the second one doesn't accept pets.

Have you looked at holiday parks? Such as the ones on Hoseasons - and maybe contact them directly. Could be a short term option whilst you keep looking

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 17:12

@DanielTheGhostGangbanger please read my posts! I have a reactive dog. She needs a garden. She can't always go out because she gets too overwhelmed. She is traumatised. I know my animal and her needs.

No being in a car would be far from ideal. But I would at the very least be able to save. Spending huge amounts of. Obey on a property that doesn't meet our needs doesn't work. That said I have applied for just about everything that accepts pets even if not ideal.

The issue is I am not being considered for any of the properties. I have been looking since March. I have viewed over 30 applied for hundreds. But I cannot compete with a couple with two incomes.
They want an income I've over £36k to be able to privately rent. I'm at £28k. Even with a guarantor and six months upfront rent I'm still not being picked!

Why do you think you have to have a garden for the dogs, you don’t. If you can walk them enough then you really don’t need a garden
